I've been watching Ryan Hall Y'all on You Tube a little bit this afternoon and on his coverage they said that Florida has had over 55 tornado warnings this afternoon ahead of the Milton making landfall.  If a hurricane isn't bad enough they get tornadoes to deal with.  Ick.

Luckily the Rays are not in the playoffs this year.

I am honestly shocked that anybody lives in Florida anymore. It sounds like insurance companies are not taking on new customers. How are you expected to buy a house in Florida if you can’t get insurance?

I was in FL when Helene hit (east/southeast of Orlando in a city called Viera) for softball. We flew in Wednesday and the pilot had to adjust his flightpath to come in from the east because the winds blowing in from the gulf were already causing havoc.

We had our first game Thursday afternoon and were playing in 40-50mph winds even before Helene made landfall and we were on the opposite side of the state. Right as we got done with our game the sirens went off in the complex to alert for lightning strikes in the vicinity and the whole park cleared out to their cars within probably 10 minutes. It rained pretty hard for 20-30 minutes and then stopped basically until sundown when the hurricane got to land.

Once the hurricane made landfall I think they said our area got about 2.5 inches of rain (all overnight) and gusts up to 60mph.

I wouldn't want to be around for one making landfall, that's for damn sure.

Kids are getting terrible weather on Halloween lately.  Last year was cold with 2" of snow (second most snow on Halloween ever) and this year we've had such a warm and dry fall and this crappy cold wet day happens on Halloween.  Tomorrow the temps go right back up.

80 degrees just 2 days ago!

Sucks.

Lilacs were still out as late as a week ago in my neighborhood here and on our way home from Duluth a couple weeks ago I picked some up north from my parent’s property to take home.  I’ve never seen that before in my life.  My favorite flower though so was neat to get a couple last sniffs of lilac!

That is crazy!  When we left in September our neighbors lilacs were re-blooming and I’d also never seen that before.  I hope they aren’t so stressed or thrown off that next spring is affected.

Lilacs are my favorite too.  When I got married, the neighbor let me cut big bunches that went into my bouquet, MOH bouquet, the church arrangements and decorated our cake.

Several years ago, I was on Lake Minnetonka in a friends boat coming back from Maynards. It was very late, dark raining and thundering. And as we were cruising back to his house, a bolt of lightning hit the bow of the boat. Scared the stew out of us. Lots of sparks and if I recall it shorted out bow lamp.

I was way to close to the lightening strike at the US Open in ’91. Was actually closer to where it hit about five minutes earlier when my grandpa looked around and said “we’re moving, this isn’t t good.”

Nearly 26 years in health care and days like today are amusing. It's amazes me the patients that shouldn't be out driving, are out and at the clinic on time. The ones who are fully capable of diving, either cancel or run late.

And it's even worse for coworkers... they can't drive to work in this... though I'll bet my paycheck that they would drive in this to weather and worse weather to a sporting event, concert or even the airport... talk about priorities... lol!!!

New house (to us) with a bigger driveway = bigger snowblower.

I am psyhed to take it for its maiden voyage!

After dealing with a snowblower that ran poorly (surging engine) and bad transmission, I replaced the carburetor and tightened the cable to the transmission over the summer and I am also excited to see if those changes fixed my issues.

This morning at 5am (I'm sure my neighbors love me) was the first time I started the snowblower in over a year. Didn't ever need it last year. Took a couple extra pulls to get it going. Meant to get it up ready to run a couple weeks ago when I switched the lawnmower and snowblower from the shed to the garage.

I had a neighbor at that time using his leaf blower to move his snow.  Jackass move IMO.  I was headed to work to move snow there when I saw him doing this.  I moved more snow today than I did all of last snow season.  Rookie move on my part that I started before the snow was completely done.  I was half way through and then a second wave came that totaled more than the first.  Made for four hours of moving snow rather than the shade over two hours that it usually takes.

Ditto on the first time in over a year. The first time I start mine for the season, I use the electric start. After that, just choke it, prime it, and pull the starter twice. Of course, now that I have the deck and sidewalk shoveled and the driveway blown out, it's snowing again. Oh well, I was going to have to start the snowblower again anyway, because the city still hasn't been by to plow the street.

I wanted to clear a spot for my mother-in-law who was coming over early morning, but after I left for work. And I'll do the rest this afternoon when I get home.

snowblower is the ONE loud activity that no one gets to ever complain about. That is a 24/7 complaint-free chore. We all have different schedules and that's a job and safety thing.

Anyone who complains about it is an asshole and you don't need to suffer them any second thoughts.

Agree... removing snow has no curfew. When I lived downtown Mpls. from '94-2021 you just grew accustomed to the sound of removing snow at all hours.

Mowing the lawn is different... it's a game... it feels like everyone in the neighborhood is just waiting for the person to strike their lawnmower and everyone follows. Must Saturdays (8-8:30) I'm the first one out and within 15 minutes 1-3 have followed and mowing.

Keep your stick on the ice...

WTF?  Does OSHA come to your house??  Sorry but not sorry, I am in the court that 4 a.m. is too damn early for someone, regardless of snow amount, to start up your snowblower.  It's just like starting up your lawnmower before 8 a.m. on a Sunday, just don't do it.  I guess I'm just more courteous to my neighbors.

If you’re mad at your neighbor that starts work at 4:30 or 5:00am for starting up their snowblower at 4:00 so they can get out, yeah you kind of are.

Not the same as mowing. You probably don’t need your lawn freshly cut to get out of your garage and to work.

My neighbor starts his diesel "work" truck many days at 5:00am.  He has to let it "warm-up"... must be all those after market parts on it (lifted, offset tires, aftermarket exhaust, etc).  Doesn't run it in the garage, no... right out on the driveway next to our bedroom windows.  I hate him.  He is an @$$hole.  And if the housing market wasn't so stupid, we would've already moved.

Snowblowers, early AM after a bunch of snow, fine.   Loud-@$$ vehicles like harleys and diesel trucks on a regular basis at 5am... you're just looking for attention and being a d**khead on purpose.

I came back from a Wild game a few years ago at 11:00pm to a bunch of fresh snow and started my snowblower.  And 1 neighbors came outside and asked me to stop, another texted my wife who came outside and told me to stop.  So I stopped, but that's what worked for my schedule.  If you can complain about 11:00pm, why would 5:00am be different?

People can complain about whatever they want. The question was whether or not they’re a jerk for it. I would have continued snow blowing if I were you.

safety thing.

Anyone who complains about it is an asshole

I guess that's what I am.

If you’re mad at your neighbor that starts work at 4:30 or 5:00am for starting up their snowblower at 4:00 so they can get out, yeah you kind of are.

Not the same as mowing. You probably don’t need your lawn freshly cut to get out of your garage and to work.

Exactly my line of thinking. Safety was a second and separate reason to do it when you are able. If I've bought something online and expect it delivered, the least I can do is make sure I'm clearing a path for them.  Both in terms of their safety and for liability reasons.

People can complain about whatever they want. The question was whether or not they’re a jerk for it. I would have continued snow blowing if I were you.

Yeah, I would not have stopped either. If they want to clean my driveway for me at a time that's agreeable for them, fine. I'd also be surprised if most cities don't exempt snow removal from noise ordinances.

Anyways, I love snowblowing so much, if I know someone is out of town or doesn't have a snowblower, I blow their driveway for them. I go up and down the street for our six-house stretch and do the mailboxes. The mailman has thanked me several times. Especially that winter two years ago where the berms were taller than my MDX.

Minneapolis ordinance:

  • Use of snowblowers and snowplows is allowed anytime during an official snow emergency or within 24 hours of a snowfall of 1 inch or more.

Obviously this is a call that each of us would have to make given their relationship with their neighbors and neighborhood.  My property isn't big enough for me to need a snow blower so I only use a shovel.

My house I had in Iowa where I did have a snow blower because my driveway was 25' x 100'.  In the five years I owned the house I never fired up my snowblower before 7 a.m. even with needing to be at work by 4:30 a.m..  I would shovel the end of my driveway if necessary for me and my wife to make it out and I was off work by 1:00 p.m. and would clean it up then.

Different strokes...

New house (to us) with a bigger driveway = bigger snowblower.

I am psyhed to take it for its maiden voyage!

New snowblower as well 😊

I like snow blowing more than mowing. I like the look of a well-maintained driveway and sidewalks. Plus making my mailbox very mailman friendly. The only negative, my house faces the north, so I don't get the sun like my across the street neighbors. My pet peeve is when I misjudge the wind the auger blows the wake of snow over me, and I look like a snow man.

If I had one like that it would take me longer to get dressed than it would to clear my driveway.

that's not a snowblower. That's a snow low-earth orbit launch platform.

I pay someone to plow...no one complains about that 😉

I wish they kids from the Armstrong Hockey Team were still doing it.  I always enjoyed when they came by the charged almost nothing, got the job done right away and were super appreciative when I tipped Smile

I don't mind shoveling (I haven't used my snowblower in years it would need repair) but I also can't risk it when I'm out of town (parents watch our cats) or if i have to be at job #2 early in the morning after a snow so I prefer to have small businesses take my money Smile

I guess technically I pay someone to plow for me (included in the overall rent). 😉

Trying to get tenants out of the parking lot to plow was always like herding cats.
