Jeepers, I just figured out to wake Uncle up to head to town.
So, with hunting, every deer I have shot has had a bad hide. Is that because of my aim? Also, I know I am early on, but I can only take my pistol hunting at this point? What happpened to my rifle I had in Chapter 1?
Each animal has a different weapon you have to use to get a perfect pelt. While you're hunting, if you lock your target in on an animal (or view then with your binoculars, if you're not close enough), you'll have the option to study them, if you haven't discovered them. It just "view info" if you have discovered them. This will tell you what weapon you need to use for a clean kill. Deer, you have to use a rifle. Smaller animals like rabbits you have to use a varmint rifle, or small game arrows.
As for the weapon, did you do the hunting tutorial with Charles? That should equip you with a bow. Also make sure it's not on your horse. When you're on your horse you can cycle through any weapons you have stored on it.
I did the hunting tutorial and when I press pause and go through my stuff, I have the bow and riffle, but when I am on my horse, I can’t pull it up. I will keep fiddling with it.
I did figure out if you let off the aim trigger between each shot, it would auto-aim for me. Not sure how secret that is or not.
Also make sure it's not on your horse. When you're on your horse you can cycle through any weapons you have stored on it.
Huge key. I can't begin to count how many times I've been all prepared to run into an enemy camp thinking I have my pistols, my Lancaster, and my rare shotgun ready to roll...just to find out as I get shot at that my rifle and shotgun are on my horse.
Then I just have to go like Deadpool. Maximum effort.
Definitely make sure you keep your weapons clean. If you don't have gun oil, you can always visit the gunsmith in the nearest town. And when doing that, if you happen to be in Rhodes, be sure to wander around the side of the shop and take a peak

I've had numerous encounters with the wrong weapon, forgetting to grab it from my horse. I've done a lot of silly things in the game -- forgetting which button I was pushing and instead of starting a dialogue with a stranger, I end up pulling both pistols.. so much for talking..
Or...if you hare having a bad day...GO ON A KILLING SPREE! Nothing better than riding around and killing anyone that decides to look at you sideways
Of course then you gotta kill the witnesses. Then steal their horse
My horse was right next to some random guy in Saint Denis and all I was trying to do was to get on the horse. Instead, I stomped on the man's foot. Long story short, the bulk of the Saint Denis police department was after me.
LOL! Yeah I was in Valentine and got ambushed beat the snot out of a couple guys with Dutch and the cops left us alone. Then I decided to loot one of the guys and the cops started shooting! That was a hairy situation!
Also fun when you forget you have your gun out and say hi to someone. If they are ornery they just shoot you right away! If I had a nickel for every time I got attacked just for saying hello I would never have a bounty on my head

I was robbing a stage coach based on a tip from the Association of Discouraged Men (or whatever it was called). Had pulled my Lancaster out with high velocity rounds in case they wanted to get frisky in the back cart, and had my Rare Shotgun with incendiary rounds, ya know, just for fun.
I was sure I had the Lancaster out and was going to shoot at an armed guard in the back of the coach.
Nope. Had the incendiary shotgun. Set the horses of the lead carriage on fire instead. ?
The lighting in this game is crazy good. I spend A LOT of time taking screenshots, my desktop at home and work cycles through dozens of screenshots that I've taken
I love wandering around Saint Denis at night.

I haven’t owned a video game since the days of the original Nintendo. It’s quite entertaining reading about your adventures in this game and sounds fun. All the hunting reminds me of Oregon trail, albeit a much much more modern version. ?

The storms are amazing. I've been going a tad too fast on some of those streets in Saint Denis at night - hard to see in some spots and end up running over a few people.

Haha - that's a classic RDR moment. I had just unhitched my horse in Saint Denis and accidentally kicked the hitching post. Suddenly I was wanted for vandalism.. lol

Once you get to the epilogue and wander around the unlocked areas there are some unbelievably cool lightning strikes.
The storms on the game are really really cool. A nice detail they added.
Too bad I needed to kill 1 GD perfect carcass robin today and it stormed like half the time I was playing so I couldn't find any.
Having unlocked the master Hunter really helps with the perfect pelt/carcass stuff cuz sometimes it'll jump a 2-star to a 3-star just randomly. It's great.

Oh yeah. I was trying to get the 660 foot kill for the sharpshooter challenge. Had a long scope rifle. Thought I was shooting at a guy. I hit the barn. Some guy riding by took off on his horse and was going to report me for vandalism.
I can't even begin to count how many bounties I've gotten in Saint Denis just from bumping into people on my horse or running and knocking them down.
Ok what annoys me is those people (like say Cory Cove) who say they beat the game dying 3 times or so. I died more than that trying to kill that white cougar in the friggin cave!
I robbed that bank in Valentine...so now no more baths

You can get a bath in every city, FWIW. Rhodes there's one in the saloon, Saint Denis there's one in a saloon, Strawberry there's one in the hotel/welcome center. Even in Van Horn you can get one by the post office.
And I'm pretty sure you can go back to Valentine without issue later on too. I know I did.
As for total death count: I bet I got killed by that white cougar 4-5 times before I finally got it down. Other cougars got me a couple times too. And a grizzly. And the legendary bull gator (that thing's head is about the size of Arthur's body. Probably my favorite death I had ?). Hell I probably died 5-6 times in Saint Denis trying to avoid my bounty crap and eventually just getting into a gun fight. During storyline missions I died probably 7-8 times. I'd guess my total death toll now is well over 70.
Handy have you found Margaret the circus guy/gal yet? That side quest is legendary ??
I finished that one earlier today. EPIC!
The end caught me a bit by surprise ??

Oh yeah I have died at least 3 times just from bear attacks
I'm also doing a hunting challenge right now where you have to kill 5 cougars with a bow. Went into that one, not paying attention to my dead eye meter. It was empty. Trying to snipe a cougar with a bow as it's running full-bore at me did NOT end well... Lol

I'm terrible at using deadeye with a bow.
A lot of my deaths come from me just being clumsy and not paying attention to my surroundings. And those deaths tend to be hilarious
I'm taking a break from missions (almost finished with those as it is) and I've just been focusing on other things, like crafting upgrades. Just spent some time hunting last night.. Found two of the three perfect pelts needed and of course it took seemingly forever to get the last one for the item I was going for last night.

I'm at about 60% completion of the game right now and it was only yesterday that I ran into a random cougar (I had already finished the cougar in the cave thing). Just happened upon this cougar outside of a cabin north of Annesburg in Roanoke Ridge. I was searching the cabin for loot when I heard the distinct sound of the cougar growling outside. I fully expected to get ambushed leaving the place, but lucky for me it was on the other side of the road so I finished it off without issue.
I hate those things. Can't wait to do the challenges involving them lol..

Legitimately spent 3 hours yesterday hunting for this stupid train station lady quest.
I got the first two pretty quickly (one by accident basically, I found a chipmunk in an area I wasn't expecting). Then waited like 80 minutes riding around the same square mile trying to find an Oriole. Then another 80 minutes or so trying to find a robin. Never found the freaking robin. So I'll get to go try that again. And those are supposed to be basically all over the freaking place.

Haha - exactly right.
I got killed by a cougar like 15% of the way through...I literally rolled on the floor laughing!
Today I sniped a perfect alligator randomly and blew a dudes head of with a sawed off shotgun. That will teach him to punch me!!
I got challenged to a duel by a drunk guy. He was so drunk he passed out before I could draw my gun.
So I got on my horse and trampled him. ?

Oh man that's awesome!
I want to get drink again like in that early mission! Stumble around, walk in on a dude with a hooker, get in a fight...good times!
Finished chapter 3...can I just kill Dutch cause his plans suck! Killing a bunch of rednecks was fun though!
When I get back from Mexico I'm going to deep dive in to finish. I will have to limit my psychopathic tendencies

Man, I hope I love Resident Evil 2 as much as you guys love Red Dead 2. I'd love to play it as well, but I think I'd end up divorced, sounds too addicting to tackle.

I need one perfect crow carcass to finish this damn hunting quest. Yesterday I couldn't not find crows everywhere when I was looking for a robin. Legitimately saw probably 150 in the 2 hours I was hunting.
Now, when I just need one? I've seen about 7, shot them all, and all were "good carcass" variety after death.
So freaking annoying.
I've had my best luck hunting badgers in the Rhodes area, FWIW.
And by hunting I mean going on badger killing sprees. I feel it is my duty as a Gopher fan.

Yeah, I was in the Rhodes area last night.. Came across several, of course none of them were perfect. At least I was able to grab a couple of nice wagons from Lemoyne Raiders and sell them at the wagon fence so it wasn't a total loss.
I'm up to like 98.3% in completion now. The challenges I need to complete are so frustrating.
I've won 2 games of dominoes in a row like 6 times and then lost the third game every time.
And yes, I do hogtie the person who beat me in my third game and drag them behind my horse or leave them on train tracks to die.
So, I haven't actually played a video game, seriously, since college (11 years), and even then, I played very rarely, and poorly, and usually Tiger Woods golf. I am really not up-to-date on anything video game related, and frankly, I suck at them.
Fast forward to this fall. My wife mentions to me several times that she wants to play Red Dead Redemption. She also isn't a big video game person, so this kinda surprised me. We had both heard about it on the Power Trip, and she really seemed to be interested. So, I looked into it a bit, and found out I'd have to buy an XBox of some kind, and whatnot. Decided to get it for her for Christmas. Spent the money on the XBox, and the game, and the package I found on Amazon also threw in some other Battlefield game too, that hasn't left the box yet.
We didn't end up getting it until well after Christmas, think it showed up in the mail a week ago tomorrow. We get it all setup, took forever just to figure out how to use the damn XBox, and spend 4 hours to load the damn thing. Finally, she was able to start the game. Given than neither of us have a damn clue how to play video games, it took a while to figure out which buttons were what on the controller, and other stuff that is probably basic for people that have played a game the last 10 years. But, after a while she got the hang of it, and really seems to enjoy it. We both now have games going, and I think we're both in the teens somewhere for completion %. So far, the game has been incredible. The detail is awesome. You guys are blown away by this thing, but we haven't played video games in 10 years, holy crap this is different than the games I remember my roommates in college playing. We like it quite a bit, and switch off playing between the 2 of us, our 2 games, even though we're doing them concurrently are already vastly different from each other.
Long story short, even for complete video game illiterate novices like us, this game is tons of fun, and awesome to play. I can't believe that it is so much fun, but also not frustrating. All games I played in the past frustrated me, because stuff never worked the way I thought it should. This one is not like that. If I get killed, it isn't because my gun isn't aiming the way I think it should, it is because I did something dumb. I guess what I'm saying is, it isn't glitchy or cumbersome to play. Probably won't ever play any other game on that damn XBox, but I think we'll get enough use out of just game to make it worth it.
Jane - when you’re done I’ll rent it from ya. From all the reading here I’d love to try it. I too have no xbox and don’t really want to buy the whole set up just for one game. Doubt it will work with my Atari.

It's really quite an achievement when you think about it, to have a game that can appeal to complete video game novices, but also to guys like us who are gamers and have been playing video games literally our entire lives. That's pretty rare. It's either too tough for the novice crowd, or too boring for the hardcore crowd.
The story is just fantastic, even the side stuff that I'm doing now after completing the main story line is new and interesting.

LOL - I'm a sore loser when someone beats me in poker in RDR2. There have been moments where if I lose, my next "big blind" will be a stick of dynamite on the table.
I've been hunting of late, just getting supplies for crafting.

I need to find some more Carolina parakeets too. I accidentally stumbled across a flock of them one day and got a side challenge where I apparently need to kill a certain amount. I have not found then since that first encounter though.
I just did the mission where I had to break Micah out of Strawberry jail. Ended up getting a bounty from it. Was that bounty an unavoidable result of that mission, or was there something I could have done to avoid it? I don't want to spend the $85 to get rid of it, so I'm just going to stay out of that part of the map for the time being.

Sure, that shouldn't be a problem. I have no idea when we'll be done with it though. I doubt we'll be able to complete it as fast as these other guys have.

As far as I know, it was unavoidable. I remember I racked up a hefty bounty there too. There are a few missions where you'll run up a bounty as part of the gang.

Yes, there are some missions that shoehorn you into getting bounties that are unavoidable. As you continue in the game you'll come across several more of those situations.
Yeah there was a point I had a bounty pretty much everywhere...kinda made the game hard
Just finished Chapter 5...seriously can I just kill Dutch?

It might be a higher bounty, I can't remember for sure.

It is kind of fun trying to ride into Saint Denis when you have a massive bounty...people come out of nowhere and just start shooting! Hell if I see anyone who looks like a Lemoyne Raider i might as well start shooting cause they all hate
Funny thing is a couple of times I had zero bounties and cops just came up and pulled their guns on me and started threatening me. In Valentine I just left but the other time I surrendered then blew the cops head off cause he was being a dick
So riding to Rhodes...decide to kill a dude cause I am bored. Next thing I know 5 cops are on me! Kill them all in epic shoot out. Decide I want to loot them cause...well money! Loot 2 and 5 more show up. Horse runs away. Shoot 3 and call back the horse. Get on the horse and kill the other 2. Take a breath...3 more show up! Ride around and kill them! 5 MORE SHOW UP! Kill them and run away. Get away and relax for a second. Decide to go back on my path o Rhodes. Ride right by a cop. He is already red so I shoot him. His buddy shows up and I kill him too! Next thing I know I am running again and get mowed down by two after they shoot my horse to the point he can barely run!
Long story short...kill someone at the wrong time...$440 bounty 5 minutes later!
