There used to be a thread for stupid questions about technology; if there’s a better place for this (or catchier title) feel free to modify.
I’m planning to upgrade my pos iPhone 7 to a 14.
My desktop is broken so I no longer have access to backing up my phone through iTunes.
I have iCloud backup turned on but am having a hard time finding an answer to my question regarding iTunes:
I understand that the music I have downloaded through the ITunes App lives in cyberspace. However, I have a significant amount of music that was manually added from cd to iTunes while I still had a working computer. Is this music also automatically saved to iCloud with a phone backup, or will I need some other means to get that transferred over?
I do not have an Apple Music subscription; It seems with this there is a sync feature to transfer across devices. Would that work or am I SOL in getting my third party music on my new phone?
Itunes on desktop was a pita to work with, so I cannot imagine this is what most folks do - so I’m curious what my options are?
This is what happens when you go six or seven years between new phones. I’m so behind in technology it’s not even funny. ?
I bet if you went into an Apple store they'd be able to help you out pretty easily.

They are very helpful....if you can actually get an appointment.

I have an appointment for the Southdale store this afternoon that I made last night. So getting an appointment is not an issue. I am getting my 2017 MBP battery replaced.

It is worth calling and asking them to find out if they can help.
I know in the past the CDs I had installed in my iTunes on laptops didn't save when I installed iTunes into a new laptop, but that was also before the Cloud stuff was huge.

This was maybe a year ago but we needed to bring our daughters phone in and appointments were 2-3 weeks out

Ah... maybe it's a phone vs computer thing. I could not believe how fast I got in.

Or maybe they've bumped up staffing since then. Just like my username... I don't know.

I’m sure they can. I was just hoping to have this sorted out so I wouldn’t have to make multiple trips to get a new phone. ?♀️
If you are able to, the Apple store at MOA has always been able to help me right away, but I work nearby so I go in on weekday afternoons.
I chatted with support. Basically cd music is obsolete since everyone uses Apple Music and Spotify type programs now.
An iTunes backup would be the only way or finding some third party app which they can’t recommend.
By some miracle, my desktop actually worked long enough for me to backup my current phone - and burn all the music I’ve purchased since the last time it worked!
Step two is actually getting my hands on a new phone.
then step three is if the computer will work long enough again to sync the music to the new phone.
Otherwise I’m hoping I can just keep the old phone as an iPod for my old music library until it dies.
I've got lots of music I've ripped from my CD collection over the years. When I've tried to load it on a new device, the standard Apple methods block me from doing so. Since my first CD purchase of Flim and the BBs a decade or two ago, I've preferred having physical media. What is this Apple Music and Spotify you speak of?

Unless you like the liner notes, art, having the physical copy. Ask the current vinyl collectors.
Just sold all my cds (rarities, imports, and um, other) to a friend who loves that stuff as much as I do. Bittersweet, but it was time. Yes, I burned them all to my hard drive beforehand. I just needed an "un-cluttering."

Don't bother, get TIDAL instead the sound is significantly better and otherwise the same. Costs a couple bucks more.
Just wondering if anyone here has used either the NVIDIA SHIELD Pro or Apple TV 4K for streaming. Picked up a new TV recently and am looking to upgrade the streaming device.
I have been using a Apple TV 4K for a while, but honestly... Any of the streaming devices are pretty good. Roku, Amazon, Google. Never heard of the Nvidia device.
I have just found that the software included on most TV's these days are just terrible and super slow. So a dedicated streaming device is recommended.

I like AppleTV as much for streaming music through my receiver or using it to project my phone/iPad/Mac on my TV as I do for TV streaming.

I've got a couple of Roku TVs and one Samsung. For everything I do, the streaming seems to work great on all three. Any issues I have seem to go back to the streaming service in question (Amazon taking almost an extra hour to get my Wheel of Time episode released in the US the other night, for example, but that was the same on PC or phone app, so nothing to do with the TV I was watching on)
B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?

I've had one of the Nvidia Shields for a number of years now. I think I had a few issues trying to stream pirated 4k movies and push it's limits when that resolution was just taking off but now I just use it for watching DirecTV, Netflix, etc. and it's doesn't skip a beat.
I use it with a harmony remote.
It supports most apps (DirecTV being added recently) but I would double check to see if it supports the apps you need.
No one has mentioned it yet but the Twin Cities major TV networks recently launched over the air ASTC 3.0. What this means is 4k over the air signals. I had to buy a converter box but watching football in 4k is sweet!
@orion Thanks for the tip, I hadn't heard this! I've always been disappointed that sports on my huge TV I bought a few years ago looked terrible... So do I just have to buy the $90 box from ADTH? I currently just have the OTA antenna plugged into my TV...
Are the games actually being broadcasted from the source in 4k? I have found that this is still fairly rare.

@rowshkex yes that's the one I bought. It's a little buggy but it's getting regular software updates to fix issues as they go it's the only one with the encryption figured out.
@jupiter good question. I believe it's upscaled to 4k. Playoff games will be native 4k. I will say though that even with that it looks much clearer that the ASTC 1.0 ota signal. The hdr part of the 3.0 signal might have something to add too.
Not so much a request for help but an offer. I have a couple Bluesky codes and I'm trying to help build out the hockey presence on Bluesky. It's fairly empty out there with Tech Hockey Guide, Ciskie, and now, GPL but I suspect it will take a critical mass to start seeing more on it. Then again, it may collapse eventually like Mastodon.
So don't expect it to be a twitter replacement or a place for hot recruiting news. I'm just looking to build out the footprint.
DM me if interested.

Can you say that in English? ?

My mistake. I thought by thread title that this was a thread to help the tech challenged, not to make us, I mean those people, feel more inferior. I thought maybe someone would explain in plain English how I could stream (is that what it is called?) games not on B1G or B1G+.
If you mean how to stream games from B1G or B1G+ without a subscription, not legally. If you mean for games that are on neither service, it would be a matter of what service the game in question happens to be on.Not so much a request for help but an offer. I thought everyone on GPL was an IT grad, or CSE for the young'uns. What part was confusing?
Actually, I am surprised by the apparent over-subscribing by techies on GPL. I don't know what percentage of grads from UMTC are techies, but a higher percentage seem to post on GPL. Fine by me.

Def not legally, and even some cheat sites don't cover the regional channels, like NESN or B1G10 network or BSN, etc.
But, snark has always been a part of this site. 😉

in a gross oversimplification yes. But it's about offering the codes to people similar in interests to my own. Before dumping them to others
If twitter is indeed skimming water just barely above Pinterest in engagement, that can't be good. Might as well sow some seeds that may someday grow something

I subscribe to the B1G channels, looking for the games on Fox9 and Fox9+ that aren't carried on BTN+. And assuming the Whoiux games are only possible with a NACHO Channel subscription?
Game 1 vs the Whioux is on Fox9 game 2 is on Fox9+
