Re-watching "Godzilla" (2014), "Kong: Skull Island" (2017) and "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" (2019) before I view "Godzilla vs. Kong"
Are they all on HBO Max or where you watching?

Yes, all on HBO-Max
Godzilla vs. Kong was very fun.
Yep. It was exactly what I expected. Get the biggest tub of popcorn you can, and enjoy. Loved it.

I thought Godzilla would win for sure, then again I was expecting the Gophs to handle Mankato.

He kinda won.

Primer (Netflix Disc):
Four friends/fledgling entrepreneurs, knowing that there's something bigger and more innovative than the different error-checking devices they've built, wrestle over their new invention, which is a time machine.
Extremely low-budget movie, and it's basically Back To The Future with a PhD. Reading about it (after watching), they did not dumb down the dialogue at all, which will leave some of you a little bit lost (I know I was a bit over my head trying to follow). However, the visual action makes up for that, and you don't lose what is actually happening.
Definitely a thinker of a movie, it is rather short (78 minutes, and reportedly there is only 80 minutes of actual film), but I'd give it a go if you want to rack your brain a little.

If you liked this one, the same director made Upstream Color about a decade later. Just as confusing.

It's on Netflix Disc, so found it, moved to top of my list. Thanks!

Godzilla vs. Kong
It isn't flawless but if you can't be entertained by this you might want to move into Sunny Oaks and start eating dinner at 4.
Only problem I had with Godzilla vs Kong was that every time Julian Dennison was on screen I thought of Russell and his prison wallet because I had watched Deadpool 2 earlier in the week for the 90th time ??

It was more art-house beret-wearing "film" than anything. Blech. Understood it perfectly, but ugh. How high in the air can one's nose go?
Andre The Giant (HBO Max):
Doc on the life of Andre.
Growing up, his career was at its tail end. I started getting into wrestling just before Wrestlemania III, which is STILL the best Mania ever; the massive passing of the torch from Andre to Hulk Hogan (I didn't know that then, obviously, this became known years later to me). I was a huge fan, of not just his "character" but of him. What I would give to sit down and have a beer with the guy and just shoot the breeze...
With the interviewees, Vince K MacMahon still comes off as a cold-hearted a-hole, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say he didn't know how to express his feelings (felt like crocodile tears to me, when talking about Andre). Hulk...he was genuine. You could feel it, when he was talking about Andre. The others, same thing. Andre was just a special presence in their lives, a one-of-a-kind.
Even if you are not a fan of wrestling, watch this for the PERSON Andre was. This doc really shows that. I honestly re-felt the heartache when I learned he passed away. He was a special person.

LOVED the Andre documentary. You are spot on about Hulk Hogan. Very genuine.

I saw Upstream Color at the theater in the Walker Art Center. The director was there and there was a Q&A after the movie. Only took about 15 minutes of questions. Every person who had a question asked about the meaning of the movie or the meaning of a certain thing in the movie. The director was very snotty about it. His art was open to interpretation. The film means whatever you want it to mean. He thought it was a film where you watch it and go to a coffee shop afterwards with your friends to discuss it. I don’t know if I have rolled my eyes more in my life than that moment.

I can understand certain *moments* that are left up to interpretation. But if the whole movie is like that, why bother with a Q&A? Technical aspects? Whoopee. :bored:

My Blue Heaven (re-watch, HBOMax)
An all too uptight FBI agent must protect a larger than life mobster with a heart of gold, currently under witness protection in the suburbs.
A "heart of gold" is a bit over the top, and you can tell when this movie was made, given the comedic style. However, still based on a true story, and a non-associated sequel to one of the best movies ever made (Goodfellas). It still holds up, still entertaining, fully enjoyable.
Edit: This came out a month before Goodfellas.

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (Netflix streaming):
During a recording session, tensions rise between Ma Rainey, her ambitious horn player and the white management determined to control the uncontrollable "Mother of the Blues".
Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman? Hell yes. Chadwick was the shine on the movie...Viola provided the PWNED/meat of the movie. Excellent performances all around, the whole cast was great. All dialogue driven, and very well-written. Would highly recommend.

Sweet! I think I have one of the free 50 hour CDs sitting around.
The Devil's Own (Netflix disc):
An American police officer uncovers the real identity of his house-guest, an I.R.A. terrorist in hiding.
Started watching this, did not know of the American Police subplot...and given this week's events...a bit of overload, stopped it halfway through. The movie is so far, so good. I am digging it, but will finish it up tomorrow. I think it will end up an average quality movie overall, barring a ZOMG moment or three. And that's fine.

Finished it. Meh. Neutral ending that was supposed to be all dramatic and stuff. Good watch, but I wish it were more.

Re-watched Goonies. It was that or Smokey And The Bandit, no bad choice there, really. (private collection)
Just wanted something mindless and goofy. Fit the bill. Plus, fun to see Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, and Kerri Green in first(ish?) roles. Martha Plimpton, also, but meh on her career, IMO. Many other future "stars" in that. One of the Fratellis was in the Matrix, the Mom was the Lethal Weapon Psychiatrist, the OTHER Fratelli brother was in "Kill The Irishman," the Fratelli mom was in countless movies, Sloth was John Matuszak (NFL player).....the list goes on....

Had some free movie channel trials this week on Hulu so I watched the following movies (some not for the first time)
1. Lethal Weapon 1, 2, 4. In my opinion 2 is better than 1 but both are really good. 3 and 4 are garbage
2. State and Main: Still one of the most underrated movies. Very funny movie about a movie being filmed in Connecticut. All star cast with William H Macy, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Julia Stiles, Alec Baldwin, Sarah Jessica Parker just to name a few. I can't recommend this movie enough.
3. Hustlers: J Lo plays a veteran stripper who shows a novice stripper the way of the business. They are making big money until the economic downturn hits and they decide to scam some of their old clients to make money. I really liked this movie. It's based on a true story.
4. Parker (Netflix): Completely forgettable Jason Statham movie about a criminal with some ethics who gets double crossed by his old partners. J Lo also in this movie. I like Jason Statham but honestly most of his movies are so similar/

1. LW4 had the best villain IMO. Jet Li was a total bad-ass. But outside of those scenes, yeah, I'd agree.
2. Agreed.
3. Much better than I thought it would be. I really liked that one.
4. Agreed. Wish he'd do more movies like Snatch, where I first saw him.

Lee Daniel's The Butler (Netflix Streaming):
As Cecil Gaines serves eight presidents during his tenure as a butler at the White House, the civil rights movement, Vietnam, and other major events affect this man's life, family, and American society.
Heavy movie, always have liked Forest Whitaker, but an all star cast. Solid movie all-around, got the message across without being preachy. Yes, lots of fiction in here, glamorizations, Hollywood-ized, but still good. Lots of meat to chew on. A hair over 2 hours long, feels like a 3 hour movie, but in a good way. Definitely recommend.

Loved Goonies as a 10 year old, but it's hard to watch as an adult. The dialogue is super weird and there are way too many plot holes for my developed brain to ignore.
Waiting patiently for Jup's ban.
Forget the plot holes. I mean, how many are in Smokey (which I watched tonight)?

New Mortal Kombat movie was super fun.
Not interested, but read two reviews today (Star Trib, and I forget where I saw the other). Star Trib one first, both are summarized/paraphrased.
1. This is not trying to get new fans. It gives current fans what they want, which is insane action and bloodshed. It succeeds in that. (favorable review overall)
2. This is a horrid movie, all it is, is one giant action scene with multiple fights, and probably the end of video game movies. Zero plot, zero intelligence, might as well just play the video game itself. (obviously non-favorable plot).
Synecdoche, New York (Netflix disc):
A theatre director struggles with his work, and the women in his life, as he creates a life-size replica of New York City inside a warehouse as part of his new play.
BO. RING. What a friggin' yawner. "Plodding" would be a compliment.

Feels like the second review 1) didn't do anything to figure out what Mortal Kombat was and 2) expected a Christopher Nolan deep thinking movie created out of a video game vicious fights to the death with superhumans and monsters from other realms.
It's Mortal Kombat. It's violent. It's bloody. It's got cheesy one-liners. And it sets up another movie which almost 100% is coming based on what I've seen, read, and assume based on the number if cars I saw in the theater parking lot this afternoon.

That's pretty much what I expected, and what the movie delivered. Some movies, just sit back and enjoy the show. I know some critics want to be the ONE person that hated/loved it, don't be that person. I think in case #2, they weren't THAT person, but they expected what you laid out for expectations.
For Christ's sake, it's a video game movie. Don't expect much.
