Murder At Yellowstone City
Long movie, but very much a Sunday afternoon watch. I watched it, and rewound a bit to watch parts again. Had a Magnificent 7 feel to it.

Maybe more appropriate in the music thread, but I saw this in the movie theater yesterday so sue me. ”Pink Floyd at Pompeii” was in a few theaters this weekend. I had seen it once before more years ago than I care to admit. Not sure if it’s playing anywhere beyond this past weekend or if it’s streamed anywhere, but it’s a great watch if you’re a fan of their work before Dark Side of the Moon. This film was released a year before 🌒 and some of it shows up here, but the bulk is off previous works. Not for everyone, I understand, but if you’re a fan of that period and get a chance to see it on a big screen (sound was great also) I would highly recommend.

Ive heard it was even better at the imax (Burnsville); I live with a nerd who has seen it twice (so far). 😂
Def a hardcore Floyd fan movie. I loved the Syd Barrett years, but that was a totally different Floyd.Maybe more appropriate in the music thread, but I saw this in the movie theater yesterday so sue me. ”Pink Floyd at Pompeii” was in a few theaters this weekend. @the-rube made a suggestion in another thread for the movie ‘Rez Ball’. Finally had time to watch it on Netflix. While some fiction to make it a movie, the portrayal of life on the reservation and basketball on the rez, was dead on. For me the storyline and characters in the movie brought back so many memories of just not what happened on the Blackfeet Reservation, but many others.
Thanks Rube for the suggestion!!!

Rez life is tougher than one might think. Many think "CASINO MONEY!" It's not that.

Havoc:
After a drug deal gone wrong, a bruised detective must fight his way through the criminal underworld to rescue a politician's estranged son, unraveling a deep web of corruption and conspiracy that ensnares his entire city.
Tom Hardy, Timothy Olyphant, and Forest Whitaker? That's what hooked me. However, it was a Statham-In-"Crank" unbelievability with John Woo action. Entertaining, sure, but not a whole lot of depth, to be honest. Many times it was "who the hell is shooting at who? Know what? I don't care!"
Popcorn movie to the nth degree.

We enjoyed it until it went John Wick on the bit. Hated it after that.
The John Wick, or even Punisher, thought, crossed my mind. This movie is not for a thinker. It's for an action viewer.

Life Or Something Like It:
A reporter interviews a psychic, who tells her that she's going to die and her life is meaningless.
This could have gone sappy, could have gone reckless, and it kind of straddled the line. It sort of worked, kinda, I think it would have been better (depending on your mood) to commit to one or the other. They tried to please everyone. I don't regret watching it, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it.

Everest:
On May 10, 1996, mountain guides Rob Hall and Scott Fischer combine their expedition teams for a final ascent to the summit of Mount Everest. With little warning, a storm strikes the mountain and the climbers must now battle to survive.
Decent movie, and while somewhat predictable (if a movie is made about mountain climbing, some really bad things are going to happen, just saying), they did touch on other issues about climbing mountains. Not just weather and walking across a chasm on a string of ladders that are joined by rope. 😉

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
After a family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia's life is turned upside down when her teenage daughter, Astrid, accidentally opens the portal to the Afterlife.
Well, it took long enough to get the movie really going...The first half is just blah. The second half is ALL THE THINGS. It needed balance. My first thought was the Top Gun sequel. THAT was a top notch sequel, and I dare say better than the first. Gold standard.
This sequel, it was good *enough*. Not great, which is a shame, they had the tools for it. Frankly, the only actor that really ate every scene was Willem Defoe. He was brilliant as to the original spirit of the first movie.
That being said, I hope they don't make this a trilogy. Obviously it took long enough to make this one, and it showed.

Exterratorial (German):
When a soldier's son vanishes at a US consulate, she illegally remains on the premises to search for him, unknowingly entangling herself in a dangerous conspiracy.
One (wo)man army thing, and the conspiracy isn't total government tinfoil hat, it's isolated. Obviously, many plot-holes involving security measures happen. An added character or two help the action, along with some twists and turns and red herrings. Decent watch, but nothing mind-blowing.

Nonnas:
After losing his beloved mother, a man risks everything to honor her by opening an Italian restaurant with actual grandmothers as the chefs. (Based on a true story; I'm actually inclined to looking into the book, assuming there is one, b/c I bet that the story is crazier)
Vince Vaughn, Susan Sarandon, and I didn't believe it until I heard her voice, Lorraine Bracco. Expected a silly old-person comedy a la Grumpy Old Men, and definitely got that. Add a touch of romanticism about food and love, a smidge of onion-cutting, and there you go. Good movie after a hard day, and you just want something light-hearted and you don't want to put too much though into it. I say "Bravo."

Finally got around to watching Adolescence (Netflix)
Really outstanding if you haven’t given it a whirl. All episodes shot as a single take. Includes the the pitfalls and quibbles in saying things which I think makes it all the more real, which is so very fitting for the subject matter
Untold: Brett Favre
This was decent. A little TOO much focus on the Jenn Sterger stuff, but they did cover the ATL year when he was on the team, and it does go up to the Welfare Fraud era. It's only an hour long, could easily stretch to 90 minutes. Worth a watch, and yeah, he's not as much a good guy as his image claims to be. There are other details, but I don't want to spoil it.

Court Of Gold:
Get an inside look at the top men's basketball teams as they compete for gold and glory at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. See the world's best players in action, chasing the ultimate victory.
They went kinda deep on the players and teams. It was similar to an extended ESPN 30/30 or Netflix Untold.
I'll admit, the only reason I pay attention to basketball is to hold a somewhat intelligent convo at my side-hustle where EVERYONE'S a basketball fan.

I saw the new Mission: Impossible movie today and honestly I thought it was average at best. I like how they intertwined some of the past movies. I'm sure I missed some as I don't remember much from some of them especially the second one. There wasn't as much amazing stunt work as I thought there would be but there is a really amazing bi-plane sequence later in the movie that is really impressive.
While I never felt bored I felt the movie could have been shorter than 2:49. Also, I'm not sure if it was the theater or what but the movie just seemed dark (literally) overall. The movie also just wasn't very fun. It was too heavy and serious. There were also a few things just were just simply too unbelievable to suspend disbelief.
I'm a fan of the series. I get some of the movie titles mixed up but the first one with Jeremy Renner and the more recent one with Henry Cavill are my two favorites.

Thanks for sharing. I may have to seek this out. I’m not near the 🏀 fan I was in my youth. DVR’d the Serbia and France vs. USA games however and still watch them occasionally. I know Steph’s not the player he was five or six years ago. But he sure looked like that guy is those games. Magical stuff.

A cool story about the plane in the movie with local ties.

I was growing up in the Bird/Magic era, so I hold the same sentiment as you, in a way. Just lost interest as the game evolved. This was a very interesting "limited series" for sure, though.

Novacaine - (rented on iTunes)
Jack Quaid plays a young bank assistant manager who has a genetic condition where he cannot feel pain, heat, or cold. He starts dating a bank employee who ends up getting kidnapped in a robbery at his bank. In his pursuit of the kidnappers his condition comes in handy.
This was a really fun movie. Jack Quaid is really good in it. There are many times where he has to pretend that he is in pain but is not. He also uses his conditions creatively to get out of situations. At just over an hour and a half if was a quick watch and a lot of fun.
Cleaner (iTunes)
Daisy Ridley plays an army dropout turned window washer. While she is washing the outside windows of the skyscraper she works at, terrorists take over the building. Mayhem ensues.
Also a fun movie (not as fun as Novacaine though). It’s basically Die Hard but with a little different bend to it. Bought on iTunes for $5. Not sure I would have liked it as much if I paid full price in a theater
"They Cloned Tyrone"
A series of eerie events thrusts an unlikely trio onto the trail of a nefarious government conspiracy in this pulpy mystery caper.
A sort of sci-fi meets blaxploitation meets "Black Dynamite," and it is rather entertaining. Not as outrageous as BD, They tried to keep it straight as to the blaxploitation formula. Unintentional humor, rather that BD's VERY intentional humor. I liked it a lot, recommend if you're into that offbeat sorta thing.

Instant Family:
A couple find themselves in over their heads when they foster three children.
Mark Wahlberg is in comedy mode, rather than soldier/police mode 😉 in this drama/comedy. Some good minor/forgotten names in the supporting cast: Julie Hagerty, Margo Martindale, and Joan Cusack.
Mostly comedy, but the drama moments cut deep at times. Much better than my expectations, that's for sure. I'd say give it a whirl when undecided on what type of movie you would like to watch. Kind of a "let's throw this on, see what happens."

Watched a couple more movies recently.
A Working Man (rented on iTunes)
Jason Statham plays a former (fill in the blank) who now works as a (fill in the blank) keeping to himself until the bad guys wrong him by (fill in the blank).
Basic Statham formulaic film with no real twists or turns.
Nonnas (streaming on Netflix)
Vince Vaughan plays a mechanic who recently lost his mother. With the money she left him he decides to open a restaurant and use Italian grandmothers as the chefs.
I really liked this movie. Perfect date movie. Kind of schmaltzy and predictable but fun nonetheless. i had a smile on my face at the end. Great cast too. Susan Sarandon, Talia Shire, Lorraine Bracco, Brenda Vaccaro, Linda Cardellini, Joe Manganiello, Drea de Matteo
Nonnas was a great movie.
And perfect review of Jason Statham (insert any just about any movie of his besides Snatch)

American Graffiti:
A group of teenagers in California's central valley spend one final night after their 1962 high school graduation cruising the strip with their buddies before they pursue their varying goals.
I had never seen this movie before, and I deserved to be booed, it's one of those movies than I knew I needed to see, and kept forgetting about. That being said, it was ok. For that type of "slice of life" movie, I much preferred Dazed And Confused, even though I never lived during either era. It was a good watch, and the soundtrack was sublime.
Winter's Bone (re-watch, recently bought the DVD):
An unflinching Ozark Mountain girl hacks through dangerous social terrain as she hunts down her drug-dealing father while trying to keep her family intact.
Jen Lawrence's first movie, IIRC. I could write a TL;DR review, but I prefer to keep it short.
This is some truly backwoods redneck hollers sh*, with a definite moral code that is different from our Yankee style. It makes sense, but it will make you cringe at times. Recommend this one to the utmost degree.

If you’re currently less than 60 years old, I think it’s really hard to understand what it was like being a teenager in the 1960’s & hence the full implications of “American Graffiti” It’s a more layered, innocent & introspective movie than “Dazed & Confused” which was set in summer of 1976, the characters summer before Senior Year (except Matt McCon role) & since I graduated HS in 1977, I can attest that the clothes in the movie are spot as well as the dichotomy of Jocks & Freaks all partying together! lol

American Graffiti is George Lucas' masterpiece homage to American life in 1960's California. Lucas grew up in Modesto and claims the film memoir is true to the everyday life of the times and accurately depicts his high school experience.
My parents grew up in small towns in the '50s and have related to me that "cruising the town square" is how the high school kids spent their Saturday nights.
I grew up in the suburbs and by then many of the communities had no central identity. We still drove around all night, but there was no square to drive around.
The Hopkins strip still existed as my friends and I were coming of driving age.
I definitely cruised in H.S. with my friends. I don't know if that will ever really cease to exist.

There were two places we did it in Crapids, along Coon Rapids Boulevard (where the businesses were) and Main Street (where the businesses moved).
Anoka had signs up saying “No Cruising” and supposedly you’d get pinched going by a place three times within an hour, but I never personally knew anyone ever pulled over for it.
Aloha!

First, when did Tyler Perry start making serious movies? Second, this is a darn good movie.
I timidly started watching, because the plot was intriguing. Figured some elaborate plot, sleight of hand, or something. All the nope. It's a whole bunch of miscommunication and misunderstanding, with some other twists in the writing/presentation that might throw you off for a quick minute.

Looking back through thread I just noticed this review. You say the plot is somewhat predictable. Well it should be because it isn't fiction. It is a recreation of actual events that occurred in 1986. Knowing that makes a big difference while watching since you realize that actual people went through what is depicted on the screen, not just made up characters. Guessing you didn't realize that, but just wanted to let people know in case they watch it, as it affects your reaction to the events in the movie.
Otherwise, I appreciate your succinct reviews of a lot of movies.
I did not know it was based on a specific climb. There are so many of those types of climbs, hard to tell sometimes. I appreciated all the non-cliched aspects of the situation.
A Widow's Game (La Viuda Negra, which actually means The Black Widow):
A murder mystery about a young widow who is the prime suspect in her husband's stabbing death.
This is based on a true story, and I can only say that the title is about all I can talk about without spoiling the movie. The movie presents itself in a couple parts, from the point of view of a couple of the main characters. This definitely sheds light on how they see their world, and gives much depth to how they act.
Obviously, given the subtitled main title, the translation is off at times. I don't know Spanish (especially Spain Spanish, which is slightly different than Mexican Spanish), but I did notice some errors. They got the gist of it, but there were certain tweaks that were needed.*
Overall, good movie, and well, this was a murder, and it wasn't perfect. If it was a perfect crime, we wouldn't have heard about it. 😉
*The pet peeve I have about subtitled movies...HIRE FLUENT TRANSLATORS.

I guarantee that was the issue with the title. I was complaining more about the dialogue in the movie. I've watched enough foreign movies where the context wasn't quite right with what I was hearing (and in some cases, what I was actually recognizing as an incorrect translation).
Titan: The OceanGate Disaster:
This examines CEO Stockton Rush's quest to become the next billionaire innovator and the doomed underwater endeavor that called into question the price of ambition in the depths of the ocean.
Oh, man, they interviewed a LOT of people for this documentary, and even had a lot of recorded conversations/recordings of the hearings. Talk about tunnel vision of the CEO to achieve his goal. Tragic, angering, horrific, all those things.

Take elements of the first and third Indiana Jones movies, add elements of National Treasure movies, add John Krazinski and Natalie Portman and you end up with a really boring 2 hour movie.
Plane:
Brodie Torrance saves his passengers from a lightning strike by making a risky landing on a war-torn island - only to find that surviving the landing was just the beginning.
Good action movie, and the action parts of course come with a suspended belief expectation. The believable parts were actually a bit more un-nerving (how the airline handles this situation/rebel islands/etc). Overall, good weekend entertainment, standard popcorn movie.

Sigourney Weaver, Holly Hunter, Dermot Mulroney star in this. Absolutely classic suspense movie, I remember seeing it in the theater. Wait until y'all see Harry Connick Jr in this...hoo boy, that threw me for a loop (and that is NOT a spoiler to the plot). he does an excellent job in his role. Lots of mind games going on, chess vs 3D chess at times.
