Didn’t know where else to put this. If something comes of it, simple pleasures.
Curious…
Can You Ever Forgive Me? (Netflix disc)
When author Lee Israel falls out of step with current tastes, she turns her art form to deception.
Based on a true story. Melissa McCarthy stars in it, and I will say I am impressed with her performance. You are simultaneously thinking she's a complete b*, AND think she's a pathetic person, AND (by the end) sympathetic to her issues/personality. It's a slow go at first, but stick with it, the journey is worth it.
Iceberg Slim: Portrait Of A Pimp (Prime)
Examines the tumultuous life of legendary Chicago pimp Iceberg Slim (1918-1992) and how he reinvented himself from pimp to author of 7 groundbreaking books.
This story doesn't really hide any secrets. Doesn't glamorize his life, although it doesn't shame him, either, and that's the point. He flat out says, "I'm not a good person, here's the reality of this life." He asks no forgiveness, just understanding. That is the beauty of this documentary.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
Memory (Prime):
An assassin-for-hire finds that he's become a target after he refuses to complete a job for a dangerous criminal organization.
Liam Neeson stars as the assassin, and an almost unrecognizable Guy Pearce plays the FBI agent chasing him. It was an okay action movie, thankfully Liam's characters are relying on their smarts nowadays, instead of physical bad-assery. Now it's somewhat believable in the movie world. 2 hours is a little long for the movie, but not by much. What time they wasted was few and far between. Good Saturday Afternoon Time Killer at worst, actually entertaining at best.

Dragged Across Concrete (Netflix streaming):
Once two overzealous cops get suspended from the force, they must delve into the criminal underworld to get their proper compensation.
Starring Mel Gibson and Vince Vaughn. Long movie, just over 2.5 hours, and no music score. It's a bit gritty, lots of dark/dry humor (really dry). Very slow-paced, and definitely driven on the characters of Mel and Vince and how they operate/function as civilians as well as cops. Touches on some social issues, very current and how they are adapting within their jobs/personalities.
Lots of moving parts, takes a bit to put it all together. I liked it, although I can't say it was a ZOMG movie. Felt a bit like "Heat" in a way, and also a bit like "Pulp Fiction" in a way. If you don't mind putting in the time, I'd say it's more than worth it to have a viewing.

If you had told me Tool had a song in Escape from LA I would have thought you were the tool. Time flies.
Wild Is The Wind (Netflix streaming):
Racial tensions and corruption come to a head in a small, segregated town after the police find the body of a young Afrikaner girl in the bush.
This story builds, and builds, and builds, and then BOOM, it gets turned on its head. The storyline of the body is merely the backdrop of everything else going on. The interpersonal relationships of everyone in the movie, whether specific or general, go rather in-depth, and there's a lot of questions one might ask oneself. One big gray area to explore, in other words. I do recommend, but yes, there are subtitles, due to Afrikaans and Twansa being spoken, besides English.

The Fabelmans (Netflix disc):
Growing up in post-World War II era Arizona, young Sammy Fabelman aspires to become a filmmaker as he reaches adolescence, but soon discovers a shattering family secret and explores how the power of films can help him see the truth.
Great movie, Paul Dano continues to be excellent at his profession. Seth Rogen is surprisingly great at a serious role, and Michelle Williams continues to be simpler better than average. Overall, I really liked it, and yeah, the subconscious hit, due to it BEING about a movie-maker, and there are certain moments you can mentally hear the director say "Ok, this is where you raise your head in a moment of despair" or "this is when your emotions overcome you." THOSE subtleties really add to the movie.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
Neon Lights (Netflix Streaming):
Tech tycoon Clay Amani retreats to an off-the-grid location in search of meaning and peace, with disconnected siblings and their offspring, only to be caught in a bone-chilling killing spree within his new estate.
Bizarre movie. Distinctly reminds me of a similar plot of a movie made years ago, also very good, but there's a slightly different plot (no, cannot name movie, that would be a spoiler). You can see where this movie is going, but you don't really know the backstory until the last 1/4 or so? THEN you figure it out.
The main character is...odd. Obviously something going on with his head. And therein lies the question of the story itself.
Decent MindF*. Would recommend.
Inside Man: Most Wanted (Netflix Streaming)
Cookie cutter sequel, checked it out for Rhea Seehorn (Better Call Saul series, she impressed me in that). However, it sure is better than the cookie cutter sequel of Boondock Saints 2, by miles. Aml Ameen (second in command part) is a poor man's Will Smith. Not a knock on him, but they were definitely aiming for a Will Smith-type in casting.
It's a good time-killer. I give credit, they really tried to make this one continuous story compared to the original. Lots of ties there.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
The Whale (Netflix disc):
A reclusive, morbidly obese English teacher attempts to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter.
Brendan Fraser deserves all the credit he receives in this role. Amazing. However, what a *ing depressing movie. Holy sh*. I expected many sad, much frown, but this is REM/Cure/Radiohead depressing at best. Great movie, but you should be in that sort of mood and be prepared for it. I was not, for this level of rock-bottom. Basically, unless you want to ruin your weekend, don't watch it on a Friday night.
Highly recommend, though.

Luther: The Fallen Sun (Netflix streaming):
Brilliant but disgraced detective John Luther breaks out of prison to hunt down a sadistic serial killer who is terrorizing London.
Didn't realize there was a Luther TV show, so wondered if I needed to know anything before watching this movie. I didn't, really. Maybe some character background stuff, like personality, but that's about it. *shrug*
Good gritty crime thriller, Idris Elba is great, as usual. The criminal is rather smart, covers his bases for the most part. Of course, one fatal mistake opens up a can of worms, and again of course it's one of the simplest mistakes. I did enjoy it quite a bit, and would recommend.

NFLX NETFLIX TO EXIT THE DVD DELIVERY BUSINESS AFTER 25 YEARS
I know, I got the email today. There goes my cache of old and obscure movies. Additionally, the current blockbusters that come out are almost ALWAYS on disc, despite being streaming-exclusive on other platforms. 🙁

You know they are just going to toss all those DVDs. I say after about Aug 1, subscribers of 10+ years just get to keep the DVDs they receive, as a sort of thank you.

The 33 (Netflix disc):
Based on the real-life event, when a gold and copper mine collapses, it traps 33 miners underground for 69 days.
Pretty solid movie about the Chilean mine collapse. I couldn't even imagine something like that, especially me being claustrophobic. Amazing how they survived. I thought some of the experiences while stuck down there were softened a little (much like how war movies don't go 100% gritty at times), but that's a nitpick. I'd recommend it.

I used to love scary movies. Now they are just fodder for things I think about when I’m home alone at night. ?
Something made footstep noises on my roof one day (my dog even noticed). Roofers had been there recently so figured they were stopping by to do something. Went outside to see - nothing there, nobody in my driveway.
Convinced to this day it was the thing from jeepers creepers. ?
I love a good creeper/suspense/etc movie. Smile and Barbarian were ones I really liked. Never got into the slasher fests.

Went and watched “Air” last night. Just a delightfully fun movie. Everyone knows the ending, but that doesn’t diminish the storytelling and ride it takes you on.

Mrs GE and I saw last weekend and our thoughts exactly. Knowing the ending did not diminish the tension. I loved how they portrayed MJ, very cool technique.

This isn’t a pure bump in the night kinda horror movie but it’s not gonna help.
I'm thinking it's 80s style gore-fest, if it holds true to the franchise.

But incredibly well done…I mean, it’s one of the best horror movies ever made. No fluff, everything down to the music is excellent. Also some great throwbacks to the original trilogy.
Don't get me wrong on that part. I've heard nothing but great things, BUT it has to be your genre.

This Is Where I Leave You (Netflix streaming):
After their father passes away, four grown siblings are forced to return to their childhood home and live under the same roof for a week, along with their over-sharing mother and an assortment of spouses, exes, and might-have-beens.
All star cast. Awkward first 1/3 of the movie, I almost shut it off. BUT, it does come together after that, and I'm glad I stuck with it. It's not FUNNY, but it is amusing. It was sentimental, but not cheesy or overbearing. It ended up being a quite "real" movie about real life. I'd say it's worth a watch. Kind of reminded me of "Beautiful Girls" in a way (which I enjoyed).

The Mauritanian (Netflix streaming):
Mohamedou Ould Slahi fights for freedom after being detained and imprisoned without charge by the U.S. Government for years.
It has Jodie Foster in it. Yeah, gave it a shot. It was quite good, and I am not one to normally watch things associated with 9/11 overall, either pro-US or anti-US, due to the overall tragedy of the event. It was my generation's Pearl Harbor (that is my take, others' takes may vary).
Benedict Cumberbatch was also very good in it, he can pull off that accent, for sure.
I can't even imagine the horrors that went on at Gitmo, what people went through, just the imprisonment itself without knowing what one may or may not have done.
I recommend it.

Above Suspicion (Netflix streaming)
The true-crime story leading to the first-ever conviction of an F.B.I. Agent for murder.
If it wasn't based on a true story, I'd have laughed it off, but sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.
This is messed up, and all things NOT to do as an agent. Given that it happened in the South with their ways, prejudices included, it's still a fair story. That's the way things work down there. I'd say it's a good time-waster of a watch, at the very least.

George Harrison: Living in the Material World
2011 Scorsese documentary. Obviously about Harrison which for many fans was their favorite Beatle. I haven't seen it since the year it came out and I'm really glad I watched it again. Yes it meant a bit more Phil Specter air time, but it also meant more Billy Preston which can never be wrong. Wonderful film whether you're a Beatles fan or not.
Nic Cage is the real national treasure.
The Wonder (Netflix streaming):
Set shortly after the Great Famine, it follows an English nurse sent to a rural Irish village to observe a young 'fasting girl', who is seemingly able to miraculously survive without eating.
Very slow-paced, gets quite twisted at the end, when the full truth is revealed. I did enjoy it, but one definitely has to be in the mood for something like this.

Clerks (private collection)
A day in the lives of two convenience clerks named Dante and Randal as they annoy customers, discuss movies, and play hockey on the store roof.
Haven't seen it in many years, and forgot how raw it was, especially compared to his other movies. Still love it, you can see the start of the arc of where Kevin Smith (director/producer/actor) is now. Just a cult classic all the way. I highly recommend Smith's "View Askewniverse" movies, every one. It's quite the array of themes and such.

A Sort of Homecoming with David Letterman, Bono, & The Edge on Disney+ is a good watch. Fun history of the band and his Daveness does a nice job brining it together. I'm a fan of the band and Dave so it was very enjoyable to me.
For those wondering Adam & Larry were not available and The Edge & Bono thanked them several times for allowing them to "go rogue".

I would agree, hard to figure out where to post something like that. I would say "Movies" was the correct venue, seems like more of a documentary movie than anything else.
