As someone who owns 2 pickup's, I guess I will sit this one out. Luckily I fall in the 10% that needs them for my farm business.  I do shake my head at the ones who put oversized tires on them and jack them up like Big Foot the monster truck. Now, if I see that owning a tractor appears in this thread, we may have a problem.. 🤣

I don't think anyone would say a farm owning trucks is a lifestyle accessory lol.

I think we can all tell immediately between a work truck and a pavement princess. Driving a 75K+ personal vehicle is already a bit much but we all know these dudes who are just trying way too hard. Congrats if that’s a frivolous purchase for you but for most of us our vehicles have to be functional.

I was looking into a pickup when I was shopping for a new vehicle a few years ago. Why? I only needed 2 seats. After that, didn't really care. Unfortunately, Wrangler was my first choice, pickup my second choice, and both were too expensive. Would they have been blacktop babies? Yep. Would I have gotten all the add-ons, etc? Nope.

I see a truck, and when looking at it, one can tell if it's a bro-dude truck or a workingman's truck. That's how I judge, and yes, I judge in that aspect.

When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.

I never thought I'd be a truck person but here I am with one.  Having two properties requires a lot of moving stuff plus we've purchased a some water toys we need to tow so it makes sense for us . I can see snowmobiles in our future as well.   We had three minivans prior to the truck and it's amazing how much you can get in those, way more than most SUVs, and after moving away from van ownership we realized how much we missed its size and flexibility.

We have a GMC but the crab walk thing on the newer ones doesn't seem necessary but who knows?  We have the pro tailgate and that is far more useful than I ever imagined and is very functional. Mrs. GE is not very tall so she loves being able to fold the gate into a step if she's hauling or moving stuff.

We probably fall in the middle between a parking lot princess and required truck. Do we need it every day?  Not at all.  Do we need it more than a few times a month?  For sure, if not more and especially after moving this past year.  I like driving it a lot more than I thought I would, really comfortable and the gas mileage is not awful. It is the first new vehicle I have ever purchased and it certainly wasn't cheap, we went one below the wicked expensive Denali package and I love its features and it's 100% standard.  Well, ok, I did add an organizational insert to put into the center console so it's not just a deep chasm.  I looked at used trucks but they really hold their value so buying new made sense to us.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.....

Hey no judgment here. My favorite vehicle I’ve owned was a 95 K1500 Silverado. It was worth it for moving back and forth to campus in Mankato alone. Maroon, regular cab, long box, she was a beaut. Vortec was just appearing in the top trims, but mine was step or two below that so it still had a bulletproof 350.

Cripes, it’s been nearly 20 years and I still miss that thing.

This is an 89 but the only exterior difference (from this angle) is the manual chrome mirrors. Mine had power ones enclosed in black.

Everyone has different things they spend their expendable income on.  Whether it be hockey, vehicles, fancy beer, church, eating out, trendy clothes, cabins, video games, your kids……to each their own.   Just because it isn’t your choice doesn’t make it wrong.  Be a good human despite what you spend your money on.  It’s that simple.  😁

I think that is factor #1, but what they drive is also a possible clue into how they drive.

Yep... too many distractions in vehicles now days. Drivers are allowing the vehicle to drive them and not them drive the vehicle while being a defensive driver.

I'd say if you're judging someone by the vehicle they choose to drive (music they listen to, food they eat, clothes they wear...) it may be a you problem.

Good Lord.

Who’s judging?!?!?! @dxmnkd316 , others and I have pretty much said, if it floats your boat, ohhhhhhh well. Just don’t get it.

"Whatever floats your boat" is an attitude that means you don't talk shit about their boat, or as stated previously their pavement princess.  😉

ftr I have never owned a pickup and am just having fun with this. 😆

"Whatever floats your boat" or its relative, "You do you" is passive aggressive judging. 😉

This week, the week between Christmas and New Year’s is a second time in my adult life that I’ve had off. The first time was 5 years ago and I was on a cruise and at Disney the whole time. Today we went out shopping shopping at IKEA and it was a zoo. Even driving around the south metro has been busy.

Do more people than I think take off the week between Christmas and New Year’s? Cause I have nothing to compare it too. And most everyone I know still works most or parts of that week.

A couple of guesses. Maybe a combination of these.

1. With the New Years holidays landing on Tues- Weds, I bet people just add Monday and string those off days together.

2. Schools out.

3. Maybe some cheeseheads stayed over night before heading back to WI.

4. I know a bunch of places, mostly in manufacturing, shut down for the holiday weeks.

I've never been to Ikea, but I know plenty of my friends from outstate make Ikea a must stop when they travel to TC.

In the construction world it's the time of year when job sites close down because they are going strong throughout the bulk of the year.  Also, it is the time of the year when you either use up your vacation time or lose it.  That is how my vacation/comp time works at my job.

What’s with this new celebration I’m seeing football players do. They put one hand over their face mask and the other arm reaches out like an elephant trunk and they waved their hand.

as a cardiologist, please don’t. Very very rare (and expensive) to eat in this fashion while getting in your appropriate nutrients while not skyrocketing your atherogenic (cholesterol plaque) risk. You will find studies online saying it works and such but has never been shown to be beneficial in any randomized trial and verbally speaking the breakdown of where the calories come from has been show to be linked with more harmful outcomes across populations (this is acknowledging this is population data rather than individualized)

Tried it? Only every time I grill. 😀

I went on a crusade 20 years ago to limit animal fats and sugars. I read the book Pure, White, and Deadly by British research scientist, John Yudkin, and as a result, I altered my eating habits permanently.  The book sparked a debate in the medical community about the root causes of obesity and cardiovascular disease. Ancil Keys of the University of Minnesota proposed that animal fats were largely responsible while Yudkin believed sugar was to blame.  (Some today believe Keys' methods were flawed and his findings unreliable, but at the time, they stuck.) It's probably somewhere in between but there has been a dietary paradigm shift in recent years.

More recently, I have watched presentations by Dr. Robert Lustig, an endocrinologist who has taken up the mantle of childhood obesity. He is extremely anti-sugar (cane, beet, syrups, white bread, and pasta) and his lectures have reinforced that simple sugars should be eliminated from one's diet. For anyone interested, his videos are great and can be found on YouTube.

I keep telling myself nothing surprises me anymore… And last night just adds to it.

I was picking up dinner after work for the wife and kids. As I was leaving the parking lot of the restaurant, I know it’s the car in front of me was driving weird. I eventually passed him at a red light because I was turning. When I looked over, he was lighting up and smoking a bong. No wonder his driving was off.

just adds to the list of everything else I’ve seen while driving. The typical’s… Reading a book/newspaper, putting on make up, shaving with an electric razor (almost sideswiped me off the road on 77 north near MOA). Adding to the list of you wouldn’t believe it unless she saw it… A guy playing a trumpet while driving on 169 and a gal giving a guy a hummer on 394 (I was in a truck and I looked over.).

My roommate from college uncle was an over the road trucker. And he would tell us stories all the time of the stuff he saw driving across America… lol!!!

@g-manpuck, Watched to Ok. State @ Iowa wrestling match last night. The 184lbs match of Ferrari upsetting Plott, 6-3 in OT was a good match. Though Ferrari was a bit cocky with signing 3 points to OK. St. bench as he was waiting for the official to call the match was a bit much. Even the 2 interviews after the match he needs to tone it down a bit.

What's with the surge of hockey players in both high school and college, when they score a goal they taunt the opposing crowd with their celebration. You score at home, you do a celly and huddle up with your teammates on the ice. Though when players score on the road, their celebration is more of a gesture to the crowd followed by huddling up on the ice. I know it's been going on for years. Though just seems in the last 2-3 years it's ballooned. I see it with the Gophers as well.

Just another of my Friday morning 1st world problem Friday morning rants... 😉

Scoring on or beating an opponent isn't enough anymore. You have to show them up and humiliate them.

After recovering a fumble in the NFL the entire defense runs to the opposing endzone to do a contrived, pre-choreographed dance routine. It's utterly ridiculous, and it's spilling over to other sports.

Sometimes the dances are funny or clever, but mostly they're like rounding up the kids at the family picnic and forcing them to perform extemporaneous skits.

The Gable Steveson cartwheel, backflip is off the charts... seeing a guy that big make it look easier than some gymnast... it's the after the match in their opponents face and in the crowds face cockiness on how great they are. I know it wrestling and an individual sport, but act like you won before and tone down the cockiness.

I would talk trash to one of our arch rivals high school players and student body. Some of the players and students “knew” me and would try to raze me and I returned the favor. Past that there was no trying to draw attention to myself. And I doubt you’re some random dude sitting on the couch. Some of us may be past our prime and our glory days. Yes, but there is an income limit you're allowed to earn before you give up a dollar in social security for every two dollars earned. I think the threshold is around 23k. So, if you earned 43k, that 20k over the threshold would mean 10k would be deducted from your SS. That's a stiff penalty. You probably know this, but another consideration is that once you start drawing SS, you're locked into that amount for life. If you wait, your benefit goes up every 6 months.

If you wait after your full retirement age until 70, the benefit goes up 8% per year

One important note is that once you hit full retirement age you can collect SS and there is no penalty for working and earning additional wages.

My dad is now 71 and double dipping.  I think he's afraid of not having anything to do so he keeps working.  I don't think I'll have that problem.  I have to figure out how soon I can retire and live off 401K/savings before collecting SS.

It was amazing to me how much I began to think about retirement once I turned 50.

My wife and I are in a good position, I started at MMM when they still offered a full pension so we will have that in addition to our savings.  Last year MMM and SOLV announced they will stop contributing their portion into the pension fund at the end of 2028, which happens to be the year I turn 62, so that is as long as I will go unless there is significant incentive.  My wife is retiring this summer so we will take some time to see how her transition goes and and we can determine when I should pull the pin.  I don't see being worried about keeping busy......

When I was early in my career at 3M and was in a breakroom having a cup of coffee with a couple of coworkers and another coworker came in and said, "Gentleman today I turn 58....I'm fireproof!"  Love that line and it has stuck with me.  😀

My dad will be 75 this year and been retired since 2014. The crazy thing, him and mom are “actually” making more money retired with his pension, ss and all their investments then they did while working.

I'll be 50 this summer and I had plans to retire early when I was single. Got married 4 years ago and now I'm in it for the long how. With 3 kids and my wife is 8 years younger than me, I can't. Plus, I would go stir crazy if I was home retired, while she had to still work.

Plus with my oldest (15) being nonverbal down syndrome, both my wife and I are in agreement of having her live with us until we are unable to take care of her. Both of us refuse the idea of putting her in a group home/care home. She'll always be are 3rd wheel.

Is it possible to collect Social Security and work full time employment I am 63 years old?

Yes, this is an important distinction.

The big elephant in the room for early retirees is how to pay for medical care. The ACA options are too costly for most Americans on a budget and as one ages, the prices go up. Mid-tier pricing, such as a silver plan, costs a 60-year-old male around 10K+ a year with a hefty out-of-pocket to boot. There's probably a premium subsidy for people earning low (or no) wages, but if you're funding yourself with taxable income from a 401K, you may exceed those income thresholds.

Carnivore diet… 🐄 🐓 🐖 🦆 🐟 🥩 🥚 🍣

Has anyone tried it… pros and cons?!?!?!

as a cardiologist, please don’t.

Gotta eat those leafy greens & cruciferous vegetables!

Insurance is my biggest concern. I plan on retiring at age 62, and my wife would love to retire at the same time, but she is a couple of years younger and carries the insurance, as I farm and she has a real job. Our financial advisor says we can swing it, but I'm not too enthused about paying for it out of pocket. God forbid if we end up in a nursing home. My brother is in one now, and it staggering how expensive that is.

I was recently informed by a GPLer that I'm related to Airey

Last summer I had to have a MRI done on my skull, the doctor told me I might have had a stroke, I did not notice anything prior to the MRI. My doctor set up a drivers test for me and they told me I did not pass. I asked to retake the test and 2 different doctors refused to allow me to retake the test? Any suggestions?

Aloha!

Why are there so many air plane crashes or air plane emergency landings? I do not remember seeing so many of these happening over and over again?

Aloha!

The UofM campus, especially on Washington Ave. I guess I haven’t realized how much has changed. My wife is having surgery this coming Friday and will be in hospital for 5 days. Though we have been done on campus for appt’s and a pre-op. And parking at the Washington Ave. ramp and walking up and down Washington Ave. it’s not the same, not even close.

As we walked around, I would point where all the legendary handouts were. Old Sally’s (and the new one sucks), BIG 10 (and helping WPoS taking down all the awning he won in an auction after they closed) Village Wok (best Chinese food) and even both Campus Pizza sites (legendary pizza). I even told her how you could scam and park for free for Gopher Hockey games by getting to the Washington Avenue ramp early. Getting there before prepaying and exiting and ramp while the gates were up. And if you went out after for too long and when you exited, the gates were down, just buzz in and tell them you prepaid, and they let the gates up.

Might have to hit up some other sites (Annie’s for sure), go for food runs for her while she’s done there recovering.

The Oak St ramp, too. Even 5-6 years ago, man that area changed, and I wasn't a regular.
