Austen Swankler has transferred to D3 school Chatham U after 1 year at Tech and 2 years at Bowling Green. I remember some wanted the Gophers to go after him last year... NO THANKS. Kid has some baggage.

The question was posed to Luke Strand here in Mankato about Swankler last off season. Strands response, "Not a chance in hell, he got my friends fired in Bowling Green". Seems to me that Swankler was deemed radioactive by most every program except Tech.

If a player doesn't transfer in the portal, do they just stay on their existing team? Or is there a limit to the number of back-up players a team can have?

I believe once you enter the portal you have basically said goodbye to your previous team so if you don’t get picked up you’re s-o-l.

Would come down to numbers/scholarships, but players have entered The Portal and withdrawn/returned to previous team. Of course, if you're a fringe player and the staff has filled your spot, unlikely to return if no other opportunities were appealing.
That surprises me - if you didn’t like your coach/minutes/etc. enough to enter the portal I’d be surprised a player would want to go back; I’d be curious how the team would subsequently treat/respect a player who did that.
shows what I know. 🤷♀️😂
It is possible that a player is told what their role would be. They think they can get better elsewhere and the coaches tell them to try. They try and fail and come back to the reduced role. That surprises me - if you didn’t like your coach/minutes/etc. enough to enter the portal I’d be surprised a player would want to go back; I’d be curious how the team would subsequently treat/respect a player who did that.

While there would likely be hurt feelings that wouldn't necessarily have to be the case.

this. all depends on the circumstances. Maybe Bob tells a player what the role is, they ask if they could look around, Bob agrees and they don’t like the options they see and ask to come back. Seems simple enough and I think all players get that everyone wants to play so would envision this wouldnt be real controversial

Which shows how rare it is. And in hockey there is way less hurt feelings over the portal than say basketball (who also has like 1500000000 people enter) and it is similar numbers.
If the players does things the right way there is a chance they could come back but it is not very likely.

Schlossman indicated in his article earlier that 2 of the portal players had told teammates in February where they were going. That makes for a great locker room culture.

Obviously that would lead to some sort of tampering during the season. Are teams contacting players directly or are they going through the agents?

NCAA enforcement of its rules against tampering would be (1) highly impractical, since those rules are written so vaguely; (2) highly unlikely in general, since the NCAA loses every single lawsuit that alleges any kind of infringement on “players’ rights”.
Adam Eisele to Ohio State

Adam Eisele to Ohio State
Eisele joins former Minnesota State assistant coach Paul Kirtland at OSU. Kirtland was the guy running the MSU program for the month between when Hastings left and Luke Strand was hired. Kirtland went to OSU to coach as Luke Strand left an opening there. Anyway, this move for Eisele makes sense that he is going somewhere that has knowledge of his game and it gives him the more visibility for his last season of eligibility.

Lot to unpack...so stay with me.
Little backlog of events on Myers state of mind in relation to his Maverick hockey squad. He has been pretty salty with each portal entry from now former Mavericks and then when Eisele and Pulver left the rumor mill had NIL as the likely suspect. Now this week another Maverick entered the portal and pair with that MSU Associate Head Coach Troy Ward was on former Whioux players Gage Ausmus and Jordan Schmaltz podcast Live in Five and dropped some info on the portal, recruits, and NIL. Myers reacted to that info on X along with some of his fellow Mav rubes with a bit of vitriol to the current state of college hockey and those players who chose to leave MSU or de-comit from MSU.

Gutless, but not surprising in this day. Most kids now won’t order food or make a reservation from a place you have to call.

Now the manner in which Ward made that statement about the parents writing a letter was rather flippant. I am sure that the families or agents made the de-commitment in a less than respectful manner but I doubt it was done by snail mail...email, probably. So I don't fault Ward being snarky about the players after spending the better part of two years of keeping contact and watching the development of their recruits.
It's just like Ward's comment on that the recruit is getting $80k/yr from a bigger school. Connecting the dots I am sure he is referring to Pritchard and the rumored destination of the Gophers. Now we live in the day and age where numbers of NIL are through around like bestowing the moniker of astronaut to Katy Perry so I don't believe that Bob is paying a unproven recruit $80k/yr. Who knows, this recruit could be trying to pull a Iamaleava to get the biggest NIL deal so Ward could be just repeating a number told to him by the recruit without any proof of reality.

A written communication could be for the purpose of having documentation, etc. Commitments are often given in the same manner. I am sure the Mankato staff is upset and I get it but not sure what airing grievances on the podcast circuit gets you.

Also add in the simple, you want to say it in the proper way and this is a moment you're going to be greatly disappointing someone so you'd like to say it correctly. Secondly, it may be added that they wanted to let them know as fast as possible so it wasn't heard from elsewhere and if they'd been in contact by email (which I'd expect many of them are by text or email), doesn't surprise me if they'd go this route. Don't know if Id say Ward is airing grievances as much as just saying the reality of what they're dealing with, though he is taking a shot I suppose in saying it's a B10 school. This is the reality of pretty much every job market now as well as every sport out there with guys changing commits or signing contracts constantly. we'll have the same thing happen again next year to different programs (we had the joy of Eiserman last year and Cooley's later signing as well as the Pitlick situation).
Also 80-90 grand for money could very easily mean...
the 40k it costs to attend (this may be higher if they keep them enrolled through summer) plus their athlete perks and revenue sharing.

Everyone is being coy about NIL and how much people are getting, but I highly doubt any recruit the Gophers bring in can get $80k up front. I can see how the 'value' of going to the Gophers is worth $80k (full scholarship, room and board, training/development investment, gear/equipment, extra ice time, meals, etc.), but I know the NIL budget for Minnesota wouldn't make an $80k check to a freshman very easy.
Now while the NIL numbers aren't very public, the spending in college hockey by the institutions is publicly available and Big Ten schools spend a lot of money on their programs. The conference placed all seven of their programs among the top 13 for spending. NCHC has three schools in the top 13, but then has programs at 15, 17, 23, 29, 36 and 39.
I'm still waiting for the more recent numbers across college hockey, but the latest set of numbers available shows that Minnesota spent the most on its men's hockey program ($5.68M in expenses) for 2022-23. North Dakota was third at $5.46M, DU seventh at $4.82M, Minnesota State was No. 21 at $3.1M, UMD was No. 23 at $3.02M, WMU No 36 at $2.39M, SCSU No. 39 at $2.35M, St. Thomas No. 45 at $2.02M and Bemidji State at No. 52 with $1.63M.
