Schmidt, Chorney, and Ness out there for the same game could get interesting. None are exactly what I would call top 4 options at this point; maybe get some 2nd PP time and 13-15 minutes a game type. Especially with the alternatives.

Schmidt has actually been getting 20+ minutes a night for the Caps lately. Always good to see.
He's such a beast I wish we had someone with a bomb from the point this year...
So, Keith Ballard retired. It's a sad day.
Has anyone checked in on LuckyGirl? She may need a hug.

I do need a hug. It breaks my heart. He has been my favorite hockey player since 2001. And he will always be my favorite hockey player. I knew this was coming but I'm still not ready to accept it. I am however, glad to see that he is taking care of himself and putting his family first. He's a good guy.
Now what do I do??

Aloha!
Ballard, who turned 33 a few weeks ago, had a 10-year, 604-game NHL career, but now back in school. Good for him!

I feel the pain. Ballard is my all-time favorite Gopher, too.
What to do? We wait for the next Keith Ballard. Seems like we've been waiting for an eternity. In my opinion, Schmidt was the closest thing to the next Keith Ballard (and was Ballard's Dad's favorite Gopher defensemen ) with a hammer from the point on the PP, and the ability to move the puck out of the zone or join the rush....and that HIP CHECK!!!
Time heals, LG13, time heals.
Really hope Bjugstad's career isn't plagued by injury.

If I hadn't accidentally stumbled upon the NWHL????? on Ch.45 tonight, I would've had no idea who the hell the Whitecaps are.
I'm still not sure?
Watched Ben Marshall play for the ECHL Indy Fuel last night. He was a standout - made plays all over the ice.
He should be AHL-bound by next season if not before.
Nice article about Nate Schmidt- http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com/2015/11/23/nate-schmidt-is-a-fantastic-hockey-player-and-its-time-everyone-knows-about-it/
Skjei called up. Making his NHL debut tonight.
The kid has the NHL body and the skills. Hope he has a good first start.

Which makes 98 Gopher alumni to play in the NHL and 107 to play in the big leagues total. Now for Reilly and Rau to make it an even 100... In the next few years, the Gophers will likely have 100 living NHL alumni -- not a bad photoshoot if it can be arranged.
Skjei with a bad giveaway on a goal. Only goal he was on the ice for. Didn't see any of the game other than that highlight.

Wish he would have done that for the Gophers

I watched about 75% of the game, watching the NY feed. He played well, and all the announcers praised him for his play. They even had him out there for the PK. Like you said, he had a bad turnover that resulted in a goal, but I see a bright future for him in NY.
I'm 50% factual and 50% sarcastic. When you get to know me, you will know which is which.

LinkUnfortunately, migraine headaches can be caused by strenuous exercise and even minor hits that cause the brain to rock inside the head (not enough for a concussion but enough to start a headache)....could be dicey for him.
Saw this blog on Skjei's first game...pretty good read, complete with video clips....

104 NHL alumni.
18 WHA alumni.
8 alumni of both leagues.
Positions are G, D, C, and W. The hand listed is the stick of the player, not the position. Some players played their off-hand side.
Deceased players have " (RIP)" following their name.
Non-Letterwinners

Let me know of any corrections or additions I need to make. If the proprieter of Gopher Hockey History or Hockey-Reference wishes to not have over 100 links each on this one page, let me know, and I'll erase the links.
Also, a couple of things for the admins (Jupiter),
1) Is there a better way to make numbered lists, because the current way stinks?
2) Is there any way to make this list pinned someplace for easy future reference? Preferably editable/updateable by other members?
This is amazing - awesome work LeoPohl!
Mike Reilly?

Thanks for the link. I watched Saturday's game (against Calgary) expressly for the purpose of seeing if Skjei made the line-up, and had a biilttersweet feeling hearing Skjei's debut on Tuesday. Looks like may ge a reprieve tonight.
Skjei is also the 41st varsity alum to play in the big leagues primarly as a defensemen, with Crowley and Yackel converting to wing from defense for the pros.
Buzz Schneider -- Birmingham Bulls--1977

Thank you. Now I need to figure out how to "pin" this someplace as a reference; I may be biased, but I think this is too valuable to be lost in the pile.
Some other notes, the next Gopher alum to make his NHL debut will (by my count, and providing nobody else dies beferehand) become the 103rd major league and 97th NHL living varsity alumnus. So for those who may want to take a picture (Frank?) of the century club, keep your camera ready and start handing out the invites. I bet the Blue Line Club would LOVE to have that, if possible. I wonder if Jup would take pictures of that, should it happen?
Updated to reflect added information.

Added, thank you.
Hanson's the wiseguy, huh? He's the one who makes it ncessary to differentiate between "alum" and "letterwinner."
Anyone know the rules regarding the Olympics and the WHA back in the day? I find it odd that Schneider played full pro before the '80 Olympics. Need to do some more resaerch I guess.

Don't piss him off. He's the one on the left. :club:
Assuming more "lost" players don't become "discovered"...
Another note, Brady Skjei became the 100th former Gopher letterwinner from the homestate to play in the big leagues, and 90th to play in the NHL.
In case anyone's interested in a quick trivia, just for fun, name the 10 "foreigners" who made the big time. It should be fairly easy, since they're (mostly) either recent or well known. They're also all still living (I think), while 8 native sons on the list are not-4 from the NHL and 4 from the WHA only.

I'd take all three of them--they all wear glasses. Of course, they'd need to change shirts and wash their faces first. That's how they get you. While you're all busy trying to throw and defend punches, they go all sneaky and wipe their contaminated blood on you and next thing you know, BAM, hepatitis.
:biggrin2:
Brady Skjei sent back to minors by Rangers.
I'm 50% factual and 50% sarcastic. When you get to know me, you will know which is which.
Just thought I'd bump this post since I added Gopher playing information. I was worried it may look to crowded and cluttered, but I think it's ok.
Merry Christmas.
Bah, Humbug!
Schmidt with a helper in period 1
This has not been a great NHL season for the program. Only three players are averaging more points per game than last year (Wheeler, Vanek, and Schmidt), and only Wheeler's points per game are higher than his last two seasons.
Five players (Leopold, Helgeson, Ballard, Bickel, and Alt) played at least one game last year and have not played this year. Skjei is the only debut so far.

I wouldn't go that far. Helgeson, Bickel, and Alt were/are all call-ups, and I'm not sure any of them made their NHL season debut before New Year's. On the flip side, Schmidt went from a call-up to playing on the pair in Washington, and Skjei appears to be on the verge (trade deadline?) landing a permanent place in the NHL, as well. Add in that Reilly and Rau are likely candidates to make their debuts this season and E.J. is having another potential All-Star season, and I'd say things aren't quite that bad. Leopold could likely still play if he wanted to, but apparently is happier retired with his family. Ballard's retirement is bittersweet.
Justin Holl is third in the AHL in +/- on the best team in the league. I know it's not a great stat, but I love seeing that for a guy that played wherever for the good of the team.
I follow his career only on a cursory level but found it impressive that Blake Wheeler recently scored his 400th NHL point. I realize he has been playing at a high level for some time but I found that quite an impressive total and caught me off guard.

I read an article this week where Wheeler was mentioned as a 'snub' for this year's all-star game.
...seeing as how competitive the Central Division is, well, sorry to these three guys who might have garnered more consideration in the old format:
Blake Wheeler, Winnipeg Jets, 40 points, top 10 in scoring

He's one of these rarities that blossomed once he hit the NHL. I saw an interview with him once where he shamefacedly admitted that he's doing things now he never did (and should have) in college....like going as hard on defense as he does on offense.

Saturday. Thing is he's only 8 seasons in and could legitimately double that. There are forwards currently playing who may not get much higher that are talked about as future Hall of Famers, Zetterberg for instance. And who knows what Datsyuk will retire with. Outside of an extra three seasons, how much difference is there between Wheeler and Corey Perry?
Edit: When I heard about that Saturday, I got to thinking that Wheeler could challenge Dave Christian for 3rd on the all-time point list by a Minnesotan until I remembered that Parise guy will probably finish 2nd.

I actually thought he had about 100 more. There are some nice competitions on that list among active players. Okposo just passed Oshie and has a 1 point lead at the moment for 20th -- both will almost cerainly pass Klatt, Ramsey, and Ranheim later this season. Have chance to pass Byfuglien, too, if only Buff would stop playing. Same thing with Wheeler trying to track down Backes. Parise and Cullen have a nice rivalry going -- who's going to finish the season as the highest active scorer from the state? Inactive -- who had Kurvers beating out Parrish for the Jefferson record? I believe Mike Crowley holds the school's all-time varsity point record, and now another defenseman does it in the NHL.

I have to admit the irony of that statement from that name strikes me.
