Whioux have added Chris Jandric, a defenseman who last played at Alaska Fairbanks. It is I believe the 4th portal player added by the Whioux

I’m just shocked that they didn’t have the fire power lined up to step right in. Teams like Mn, UND, MI, Bc etc that always have high end talent that could leave early should always be prepared. I would much rather have a majority of recruits come in and maybe add a player a year instead of bringing in 5 transfers and a couple of recruits. I guess we will see which path will work next year.

I hope Motzko looks at Kohen Olishefski. Could use another older, experienced player up front with so many freshman coming in. He has some size and speed. Was captain for Denver and played in frozen 4.

Saw Cameron Wright mentioned. Haven’t seen a lot of him but I think he could struggle keeping up with pace against better teams. Has a big shot.

Phil Knies seems most likely if we go to portal.

I wonder how the transfer portal will benefit a new team like St. Thomas. Mn could have 6 teams in the ncaa tourney next year

Interesting story about Saint Thomas and the potential use of the transfer portal to help fill their roster.

Remember, they aren’t eligible for tourney play for 5 years.

This portal year is crazy. I am torn on how I feel about it. I feel like some team is going to load up and possiblly transfer their way to the Frozen Four. On the other hand players should get to do what it takes to advance themselves both academically and in hockey.

It will be an interesting year next year. I’m hoping the transfer plan backfires on a couple programs.

I’m not torn. I dont like it. Teams who are wont to assemble a mature team are in heaven with the option to snatch up 25 year olds who are proven at this level. There will be teams that are much older next year with all these 5th year players. I’m not even persuaded that the portal is necessary.

Seems like the day is coming when you can build a team of transfers. It’ll be like the Dodgers and Yankees. Screw the farm system (or recruiting) and load up on free agents.

I’ve got no problem with this unique situation for next year, the bonus year of eligibility & not having to sit out a year. Laffer got another year, McMannis gets to play a bonus year at UNO, Max Johnson gets a bonus year at WI, where his Dad played football, and who knows, a tUMD senior or two may stay for a bonus year too  :biggrin2:

Problem is that everyone who played this year gets an extra year of eligibility. So you have freshman this year who will somewhat be incoming freshman in October if they want to be. So it may not be here forever but it is for 4 years.

They have a bunch of drafted or about to be drafted guys lined up. This gets them an extra year and they will come in flying.

As a fan, I would much rather see Pitlick, Huglen, Broz, Knies, and Lucius come in rather than 3 transfers and only 2 of those guys in fear of losing one of them if they are pushed back. I’m ok bringing in a depth guy to round out the roster, or the goalie position and I’m guessing the Gophers will lose 4th liners in the portal every year. It will be interesting how this all plays out. Will some teams recruits leave because they are pushed back and will those teams who actively use the portal get a bad rap amongst recruits and will the recruits steer clear of those teams? I realize a team like UND had a huge SR class, plus a bunch of early signings, so maybe this is a weird year for them as well, but adding 5 or 6 portal guys seems excessive. I could see AZ St using the portal as a recruiting tool instead of the traditional route.

UND is clearly in a position where their top recruits are willing to wait an extra year. So the Gophers would hopefully get to the same point. With the way it shook out it just isn’t going to be a heavy transfer year for the Gophers, though.

McManus would definitely have helped the team as a 5th year guy. His departure tells you where the gophers are at in this process.

The COVID no-sit rule is essentially allowed, but the NCAA is in the midst of finalizing a permanent one-time, no sit rule for a transfer. That is expected to be released later this summer.

I agree. It’s too easy now and it undermines the commitments that were made. I can understand there are extenuating circumstances, but free agency isn’t how college sports should be run.

But others pointed out, his family loves tBob and he seemed to turn the corner the 2nd half. That then leaves 11, 18, & 21. 18 isn’t a Motzko recruit, but his dad has ties to the U. Both 11 and 21 were Motzko recruits, and maybe 21 would want to go back to Az to play. Don’t we all love speculation?

I love rumors… so.. When Bucci incorrectly said Cruikshank was going to BC, and Cruikshank replied that nothing is set yet, a current Gopher liked his response… It may be that a player is friends with him or that player knows something or it is probably nothing.. One can wish…

I see two Gophers liked it, both of whom are transfering out.

And at least 1 that isn’t

Scrolled through the likes twice and only see Weber and Rossini.

Just went to a player who I follow, and hit his likes and it was there.

Then free agency is now officially a part of building championship caliber teams. The rich will get richer, and thankfully we’re one of the schools that will net out positive.

The extra year to play applies for anyone enrolled Fall 2020, right?

The Gophers will be in the free agency market for defensemen next summer.

                      That decision was likely mutual.

I would think this process is in flux as well. If the Gophers think they can move in a young player who can perform at or close to a one-year guy like McManus, I’d say bring him in. McManus would help this team, no doubt, but he’s nowhere near the level of a Pitlick, for example. The team is losing experience more than skill.

You think Pitlick is going to put up more points next year than McManus would have? I doubt that.

I was referring to Rem. Losing McManus is not on the same scale as losing a player like Rem. McManus is more replaceable.

I don’t know how they think they’re going to be able to do that. There are so many people who need to have access to it that its hard to keep the ones out that don’t. I don’t see the point of reforming it and don’t know how they would. If they want to keep the Media from posting it, then they should make it public for themselves to get the credit.

It will be interesting how it will shake out. I don’t think MN use the portal as heavily as teams that don’t have a strong recruiting pipeline. I could see the Gophers adding a player or 2 every year at most. For Mn, goalie may be the most logical position to use the portal. The fear of pushing recruits back and losing them may be more powerful than the temptation to grab a portal player. Teams that are 2nd tier teams may benefit the most, and will help them close the gap. The clear losers will be lower tier teams that will lose their best players after taking a chance on them.

Yep. If a guy blossoms at Huntsville, he’s apt to move on to a higher profile team.

Speaking in generalities, is that something that we, as college hockey fans, are comfortable with?

Yes. Because we will get the good players. I disagree that the Gophers won’t use it heavily. If it’s the best strategy to win titles it needs to be used, even if that means delaying some recruits and ultimately cutting ties with them.

As of right now… Minnesota is VERY THIN on defense recruits. They had 10 D-Men on the roster this year. Denman is the only one that didn’t play. As of right this moment, they have 8 on the roster. I can see them easily picking up a D-Man out of the portal this summer to fill some spots.

Next years roster as it looks right now.

Currently only 3 D-Men committed to be Gophers right now. None for this fall.

If they don’t pick up any D this summer they’re going to need multiple next summer. We’ll lose 5 of our 8 D, and there aren’t many uncommitted D out there.

I’m just wondering how many smokey, backroom deals are going to be made out there with some of the coaches who like to push the rules to the limit. I can see somewhere a coach tells a player that he doesn’t have room for him this year, but if you go play for team x for a year or two we “might” have an opening in the future. I can see some potential landmines and some bitter feelings between coaches who try to do it the right way and those who push the envelope. Most likely is that the coaches will use players as recruiters to put out feelers to see if there is any interest.

Someone could reload with a package of Veillette and Calder. Might be the Bulldogs.

Not a lot of great D options in portal. LIttle crazy at forward you have multiple guys that wore letters, led team in scoring, and an all NCHC caliber player. Then on D you have guys like Griffin Mendel. Might have to try to flip a guy that’s gets pushed to USHL next year. Maybe Henry Nelson if Notre Dame doesn’t bring him in??

I agree you have to use the portal, but can’t overuse it. Both teams that played in championship game had contributions from transfers. Recruting from portal has to be interesting. For Juniors and HS you can talk to players coaches to get insight….don’t think many college coaches will be eager to provide anyting other than smoke signals.
