Agreed. I'm about half-way through it now and the interaction between all 3 has been great.

Loved the story telling the last half. This was a very fun episode for me.
Time to do a cast with fans that have unique viewing experiences watching the Gophers from places other than MN. Yup - I'm pumping myself up. 2023 regional games viewed from Philippines, FF semi from Bangkok, FF final from Myanmar. That's a story! ?
BREAKING NEWS !!!!
I'm 50% factual and 50% sarcastic. When you get to know me, you will know which is which.
We are not quite sure how we are doing this yet... I will not be able to be on site for it, but Vegs should be able to be live. It will be a 30 pre-game show and happy hour on site. Vegs will be giving away some DTA swag during the show. Interacting with people on site and whatnot.
Not sure on the exact time this will happen. We'll keep you updated.

@jupiter Hopefully we will be able to make it down there and then get to Mariucci for the game. Regardless, what a great way to grow the GPL brand.

This is a cool idea. Wish I could be there.
Agreed. Particularly when the game is on a Monday. This is a cool idea. Wish I could be there.
Ditto. But this thing called a job…just keeps getting in the way of my life. Dammit.
Dumb question.. and not to complain about dates and times or anything because it doesn't bother me but why are the Gophers playing a Sunday/Monday series? I know football dictates some of that during their season, but that's over now. Just curious.

Great episode with Milewski! It was interesting to hear Todd talk about the access to the coaches. I think that it definitely mirrors how accessible they were here in Mankato. I think that the major donors "Friends of Maverick Hockey" had more access throughout the season than the scribes did. Though Hastings really kept his circle pretty tight, he wasn't out in the community that much.

My podcast brain got McKay mixed up with Hunter Shepard who won the Calder Cup last year.
I heard bits of the podcast while at work. I thought I heard you guys discussing the hot dogs at the Decc - I remember as they came cascading down the student section was chanting “Spehar’s a wiener” (so it happened late 90s) - I *might* have that game on a VHS tape somewhere (for you older folk here who still remember those 😂) and if I can find the tape (and the tape player 😬) I’ll see if I can find out who tried to throw something back at the crowd.
Listened to it last night. I even got a shoutout! Thanks @eric-vegoe haha. Appreciate the discussion.
As fan FYI, this is an excerpt of what was sent to all NCAA Ice Hockey officials this afternoon. This is in no way meant as commentary by me on any of the specific plays. Just simply letting you know what was distributed.
Goaltender Interference.
This continues to be one of the most challenging plays in the game. Be sure to follow the five
points that the rules committee established to ensure that these plays are called consistently
in every game.
1. Was the contact inside or outside of the blue paint? (crease)?
2. Was it initiated by the goaltender’s own defenseman or the attacking skater?
3. Was that contact avoidable, and did the skater try to avoid contact?
4. Did the goaltender have enough time to get back into position before the goal?
5. Did the contact prevent the goaltender from playing his/her position? In recent weeks there have been several situations nationally regarding goaltender
interference. (visual screening) Please note the following when considering goaltender visual
screening. If an attacking player establishes a significant position within the goal crease, to
obstruct the goalkeeper’s vision and impair his/her ability to defend the goal, and a goal is
scored, such goals shall be disallowed. For this purpose, a player establishes a significant
position within the crease when, in the referee’s judgment, his/her body, or a substantial
portion thereof, is within the goal crease for more than an instantaneous period of time. There will be other important reminders posted shortly that will assist you during the
remainder of the season.
Let's see... 1st disallowed goal on Saturday
1: Contact with goalie was inside the crease, but Moore was trying to stay out until number 2:
2: Defender pushed Moore into the crease
3: Only way Moore could have avoided contact as it was initiated would have been to back into the crease on his own, instead he tried leaning forward over the defender specifically to avoid contacting the goalie.
4: No, as the puck arrived within a fraction of a second of the contact
5: Not really, the contact was minimal, arguably did impede vision
2nd goal Saturday
1: inside
2/3: More difficult, Nelson was tripped up by the defender, but maybe could have avoided contact?
4: Unequivocal YES. The goalie putzed around on the ice for a moment to try to draw a penalty, then got up, squared up against the puck-carrier, moved to try to block the next puck-carrier when Brodz passed
5: No. Initially upon being knocked down, of course, but as noted in 4, had time to get back on his skates, fully square up against a potential shooter, then was moving to a second shooter when the goal was scored.
And: thanks for the solid info. I know you're not commenting on this particular info, but very good to see the actual guidance that was sent out.
B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?
@steve-mn I don't want to engage every single post about this, but did want to have some conversation regarding it. I hope not to derail this thread entirely either...
As alluded to on the podcast and posted elsewhere this are judgement calls and it is up to the official on the ice (and viewing the replay when available). And I can appreciate that being your judgement of the plays in question.
Moore knows where the crease is, and sets up his position immediately outside of it. His right skate is definitely in the crease before the puck enters, it also appears his left skate makes contact with the blade of the goal stick, right thigh makes slight contact with block and hip/butt makes contact with the goalies head - although arguably that last part happens once the puck is past.
In my judgement (I was not on the ice, and can only see the two angles from the twitter post) there isn't enough video for me to say 100% that Moore's contact was the fault of the defensive player. Is there some jockeying going on? Yes. Moore's stick is also up pushing on the defender trying to create space. I think Moore also allowed himself to be pushed back a bit - maybe he know where the crease was, maybe he didn't. I think Moore is also partially at fault for his presence in the crease. His right skate is in there more than instantaneously, makes contact with the keeper and screens him. It enters, and then he keeps backing in until the puck goes in. It just isn't very good optics and I would have a hard time allowing it to stand.
For the second goal, I get the impression you are treating the #1 through #5 as an AND list, rather than an OR list. I think Nelson could've avoided the contact, if not at least done more than he did. I think the contact was avoidable and initiated by the Gopher player (diving defenseman had very little impact on his path to the net). That is my judgement. Once that happens, I can't have a goal be scored in the immediate aftermath. 4-5 seconds, to me, is still immediate aftermath. HOWEVER, the NCAA has sent guidance asking officials to let these situations play out rather than killing play, unless further injury is an immediate risk. So play was potentially allowed to continue due to that guidance. It is my opinion that once the puck went in, like @Jupiter said, the official went "oh crap, this probably should've been killed earlier." Did the goalie try to 'sell it' a little bit? yeah he did. I don't feel that his actions should cancel out the significant contact that was made.
The goalie rushed to try and get back into position once he realized play wasn't going to be stopped. Should we punish him for that, by allowing the goal? Maybe that is some people's opinion, but it isn't mine. He could've easily stayed down on the ice and eventually forced play to be blown dead. Would we have allowed that goal then to stand while he is laying on the ice? I'd argue no, that goal wouldn't stand. The 4-5 seconds just isn't enough time after that amount of contact. I also shared that I likely would've called a penalty on that had it not been a tie game with less than 3 minutes left (compounded with needed to waive off a puck entering the net). If Wisconsin gets possession, tries to clear and cannot, and then the Gophers score. We may be having a different discussion (as long as no penalty was being called for the initial contact). Again, in my judgement, by saying the defender was the main reason for the Gopher player to make contact with the goalie, you are really selling short the ability of D1 hockey players, he is a much better skater/player than that.
As far as the discussion about, does this become a good strategy, sending guys into your own goalie? Hey maybe. But you run the risk of the judgement of the referee. And all referees judgement is slightly different. No 2 plays are the same, and sometimes depending on where you are standing certain things can look differently. Diving, embellishment, and deception have become a big part of hockey the last 5-10 years. Players are regularly trying to draw calls, sell a call; whip their head back to make it look like a high stick, etc. I also think it has 100% become a strategy of opposing players to use even slight contact in, and around, the crease to stumble into or even throw themselves into the goalie. So there is that other side of the coin as well.
Hopefully you don't view this as a personal attack or insult. Just trying to have a conversation about it, maybe playing devils advocate a little too. You don't have to agree with me either, just trying to offer some insight on other ways to look at the play(s).
Arguing the minutia of the call, watching video frame by frame, speculating about what a player is thinking, and parsing definitions of words in the rule book only strengthens my belief that the calls on the ice should not have been overturned.
If that happened, Minnesota wins in regulation.
I cannot stand instant replay. I think it has done way more damage than problems fixed. But so many people pounded the table saying "We HAVE to get it right." even though people aren't going to agree on 100% of the replay calls anyway.
I had hoped replay was going to be used to correct obvious errors, but argue over if a skate is over the line by a gnat's eyelash.
My stance is that hockey is a game played and coached by humans who make mistakes, watched by humans, and officiated by humans who also might make mistakes. If we cannot live with the human element of a margin for error, then I don't really know how to fix it. We still have a margin for error as evidenced by all the disagreement over these calls.
@fightclub30 I don't see it as an AND list vs an.OR list... I see it as... Take all five of these into consideration as a whole. The first goal, for the reasons you state, I'm less convinced of. But for the second goal on Saturday, disallowing that is just ridiculous, given that the goalie got back on his feet and was in position to play the shot from Brodzinski, then was moving after the pass and couldn't stop the actual shot
How long after a goalie gets bumped into does he have to get back up? Ten seconds? Thirty?
And, as @streakygopher states... How long did it take them to find enough contact to overturn the first ones in particular. That was a LONG review... They appeared to be looking for a reason to disallow the goal. And for the second, that's just BS... what that call says is "knock opposing players down by your goalie... It gives you at least seven or eight seconds that your opponent can't score because of the interference"
Edit: I agree on the impact of replay. If it was being used to correct obviously missed calls, for sure the first goal Saturday stands. They took several minutes scrutinizing the video to decide that it was interference. If it takes you THAT long to decide, it wasn't an obvious missed call. And, certainly no personal attack perceived or intended in any of this.
B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?
out of curiosity, do you think there should be a time limit for review? As alluded to above, if it takes you more than let’s say two minutes to try and overturn something, that means you probably don’t have convincing evidence to do so and should stop looking for the gnat’s eyelash. Curious your thoughts on that.
I am with you in that while replay has its merits, for many sports it has really added frustration to the games played by humans.
Although I’m still mad about that Twins playoff game pre-replay in ‘09 when Mauer hit that ball several inches fair and it was called foul. 😡
I'm even more flabbergasted the 2nd and 3rd goals were disallowed after having read the 5-points shared by fc.
Oh well.
As much as I would like to see a time limit imposed, I am sure people will just complain that they didn't use the correct angle, wasted too much time on the wrong angle, etc. This is the angle that shows that his skate blade was 1mm offsides!!! That type of thing.
We've have just created this environment where there is the expectation of perfection. Then you have a rule book that is full of works like judgement and discretion. They don't go very well together. Even when officials are reviewing replays, they are often still using judgement and discretion to determine if it is a 5 and a DQ or just a 5.
I am okay if there is a person upstairs looking at video, and can hit the buzzer if there was an undetected goal like in the NHL. Or can hit the buzzer before play resumes if someone was clearly offsides immediately before a goal.
Again, just my opinion, I just feel like we've opened pandora's box and there isn't an easy fix where everyone is happy. The question I have to offer is, is the NCAA Division 1 game better because of expanded video review? I argue that it is not better, but I say that with black and white striped glasses on.
In any reffing, consistency is key. You're not calling that? Don't call it for the rest of the game. The reverse of that also works.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
Can we stop the reffing talk in here please? Take it to the reffing thread or game threads.

I take no issue with the usage of "a pair of minutes". Is it really unacceptable compared with, "two minutes"?
I slightly prefer Mazz, but he hasn't been on in years now. To be honest, all the regular guests now are awesome, good work Jup/VeegsCaponigri is the best guest by far in my opinion.

I was at the game in the front row of the student section when Roberg scored his first (only?) goal at Mariucci. The grin on his face afterward as he came over and slammed into the glass was something I’ll never forget.
Also the times he would be at Grandmas sports garden in Duluth after the games up there and you’d ask to see the championship ring and he’d just hand it over and disappear and then you’re making sure you don’t lose it for a few minutes. Super awesome dude.
I too have experienced having glass beer bottles thrown at my head in the old ralph. 😬
Good times.
You have GOT to get Nick back on again. Leo and Pohl would be great too, but an OT full of KHL stories would be incredible.

That was one of the best interviews we have had. Really fun and interesting. I hate to suggest more work for you, but having a periodic interview with some alumni could be quite interesting—2 or 3 players together on a separate podcast.
I'm looking forward to listening to this podcast on my drive back to Mankato today. I've said here before how great Nick was at the last GPL skate a couple years ago.

Just started watching now.
My guest requests and I fully understand some of these are probably next to impossible to get. But a girl can dream:
- Neal
- Pat The Rat
- Vinnie!
- Leo
- Pohl
- Vanek
- The Hendricksons
- Janaszak
- tDon
- Hauser
- DeMarchi
- Crowley
- Stauber
Since some players still in the game (playing or coaching) are probably inaccessible during the season, any thoughts of doing a few shows during the summer?
But I realize you guys have lives and jobs beyond GPL so I know I'm being a bit greedy.

Wonder if he remembers the 2002 skate? 🍺

I really didn't know what to expect from Nick. The passion he still has for the program is awesome and the fact he and Leo are in charge of the alumni group means that group is in great hands. Listening to him tell stories was like sitting next to a buddy at a bar. Like you said, I could have listened to him for days. He is the perfect guest for a "bye" week when he can just tell stories. Well done.

@slap-shot I would add Guentzel to that list. The decades at the U as a player and coach would produce some epic stories. I'm sure there are a few that still sting a bit, and am not sure if he is ready to cut open a vein about the end or the Lucia years.

Awesome podcast. Kudos to Nick, you can tell he wants what is best for Gopher Hockey.
Awesome pod with Nick, he was such a great storyteller. I'm gonna have to watch OT on You Tube this weekend to hear more stories. Great job again @jupiter and @eric-vegoe !

Finally got caught up with last week's podcast. What an impressive young man Nick Angell is.
Angell is just the best! Great job as always guys. OT was hilarious. I remember a lot of the gripes about alum connection with the program under Lucia and it’s great to see Motzko take a totally different approach.
Also I feel vindicated that when I was a young pup and did the skate with the gophers in ‘02 that I forced GE to take me to Pat O’Leary’s table for an autograph since he is such a ‘man of the people’ and John Pohl is MIA 😅

I don't think it can be understated how lucky we are as fans to have this podcast. I am continuously impressed with the quality of the guests and the conversation that is had between them, Vegoe and Jupiter. From the breakdown of the most recent series, to talking about the next one, to just hearing them discuss random topics. Altogether, it's really fun to watch. Honestly I think the podcast deserves more recognition and viewership. An honest thanks to everyone involved and I look forward to hearing more this season and next.
