@slap-shot it helps that we have ready access to ice.  Today Edina is voting to add a sheet of ice to Braemar.

Both of my boys are bantams so I see a lot of games with checking.  I’ve seen at least a dozen checking from behind penalties, but not one of them has been called a major.  Every single time it has been a 2 min minor and a 10 min misconduct.

i am getting sick of the refs letting these kids off easy.  Not because I want a bigger penalty, but because these kids need to learn they can’t do this.  A 5 min major would hurt the team enough to teach a lesson.

2 min is not enough.  Very sick of it.

5+10 requires the refs to submit a report to the District.  I've heard more than a few referees admit they are very reluctant to hand out majors because they don't want to deal with the paperwork.

High school too. Last game we had a player hit high in the facemask, when the offender got off the player he had just illegally checked he punched him in the side of the helmet. 2:00 for roughing!

This is ridiculous.  Kids will get hurt.

My kid took one from behind about a month ago where the top of his helmet went into the boards first.  I wasn't at the game but our coach sent me the video because he thought it was absurd and he also sent it to the district for an explanation.  Thankfully no injury came of it and while I know we are lucky I wasn't too upset at the time.  But now that I have seen so many checks from behind get called 2 and 10 I am just convinced it'll take a big injury before the refs call it by the books.  The kids clearly don't fear the consequences at this point.

Now that the first year bantams have had a feel for checking and physicality of bantams I have found the games are starting to get more and more chippy.  My older kids is a 2nd year bantam and I don't think the games were nearly as physical last year as I have seen so far this year.  He is a defenseman and it seems every game he is battling some injury or bruise from a slash or a cross check to the back.

Does anyone have a link to show the size of youth orgs by total players in MN?

Also do youth hockey orgs follow city boundaries or do they lineup by school district?

For instance there are houses in Minnetonka that lie within the Hopkins school district - would a hockey player in those residences register with HYHA or MYHA?

As far as boundaries youth players can play for the city they live in or the association aligned with the school they attend.

We once lived in Coon Rapids but our kids went to school in Blaine and we could have had them play for either association while they were in elementary school.  We chose for them to play for Coon Rapids because they played with the kids they eventually would have went to high school with.

But then we moved to Blaine and switched associations.

@slap-shot I couldn't find a list of consolidated numbers.  Each youth association might have them on their annual report.  MN hockey had to have it as well someplace.

As to playing, it follows school district lines.  If a kid is open enrollment they do not automatically get a waiver.  Did your example a kid living in the Hopkins district but going to school in Minnetonka would need a waiver. This only applies to travel levels.  Mights are not regulated and can play anywhere.

The 8U Report is the one that I've seen the most often published.

https://cdn1.sportngin.com/attachments/document/14a6-2722037/22-23_Affiliate_Final_Reports_Minnesota.pdf?_gl=1*vxk336*_ga*Mjk0MzczNTkyLjE3MDYxMzY4OTE.*_ga_PQ25JN9PJ8*MTcwNjU0NjY0Ny4yLjEuMTcwNjU0NjY5Mi4wLjAuMA..#_ga=2.249962694.114413492.1706546648-294373592.1706136891

The leaders in youth hockey right now are Wayzata 512 8U players, Edina 499, Minnetonka 467 and OMG 424. No wonder those associations do so well.

Hopkins had 109 8U players.

The waiver situation for kids in private or charter schools is always a contentious one. I see it from both sides. Here's the change going into effect next year.

https://www.minnesotahockey.org/news_article/show/1297790?utm_source=MN+Hockey+Newsletter&utm_campaign=8e29e4d627-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_10-20_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_b37c46ec5e-8e29e4d627-13546789

"The rule modification allows players the ability to waive into a Minnesota Hockey Association (outside their own Association as determined by residence) whose boundaries incorporate the school in which that player is enrolled and attending.  This waiver must now occur prior to the start of the player’s first year of Squirts or 10U level. Should a player stop attending school within that association’s boundaries, they will revert to their Association of residence for participation.  Players who have not obtained a school attendance waiver prior to being eligible for Squirts or 10U, may only play outside their association of residence by obtaining a discretionary waiver."

Essentially this means that if a player is going to play outside their home boundary, then they can do so without getting approval from the association within their boundary if they do it before starting squirt/10u. Previously, they still needed that discretionary waiver from their local assocation.

I did not realize this was a thing until I saw a tweet about it. Guess they'll play in the gold medal game tomorrow vs. Czechia

Odd way to label the roster but their DOBs make it pretty obvious.

I think there are four but I get what you're saying. They really pounded on the big metro associations this season. We'll see if they can keep it together. They've had Bantam champions before that didn't do anything at hs state.

Also, I'm surprised little Hermantown could get through the field. 🙄

Enjoyed this too. But you really don't need a sign, the home town stuff is implied in the out state. Must be a dig at someone.
