The former owner of the franchise in Arizona is finally walking away. I have been following this whole saga and he has put on a master class of what not to do as an owner of a pro franchise.

He still had like three years to scrape together an arena deal but once the auction feel through, apparently he is fine with just giving up. I have to admit (although it pains me to) for Bettman to conclude this Arizona saga without a lawsuit against the league, and with what looks to be a fantastic and enthusiastic owner in Salt Lake, is a huge accomplishment. A masterclass on display.
The NHL will go back to AZ (eventually) but with an arena ready and a new owner at the helm.

Ryan Suter bought out of his contract. Again.
the gm whose team just went to the western conference finals for the 2nd straight year? Not sure that I follow your logic.J22 has a new GM to hate.
Bedard wins Calder - instead of R.o.t.Y, lets just call it Rookie who scores the most goals.
And now were are expanding replay to include pucks over glass. Let's just make every play reviewable. In fact, if we go 3 minutes without a whistle, we should probably just stop play and review the last 3 minutes to make sure we didn't miss anything. I mean we don't want to miss something, and we have to make sure we "get it right." Replay was introduced to correct "obvious mistakes" not dissect video like the Zapruder film, going frame by frame, to see if a guy was one sixty-fourth of an inch offsides. It is slowly expanding every year, and I hate it.
I think we are losing track that these are games, and supposed to be fun and entertaining. The sports gambling and business side of professional sports (including these awful regional TV deals) have sucked my joy of watching and paying attention. This year was the least amount of playoff hockey that I can remember watching.

agreed entirely on reviews. it should take 30 seconds max and can be radioed to the on ice refs. You’re only overturning egregious things otherwise stands as called. If it takes longer than that, clearly it’s not egregious and play on. The NFL (via the UFL) may be getting it right in the All reviews are automated by the booth (why we all insist on having the on field/ice refs go into a box and look at a tiny, poor quality monitor is incredibly stupid). Honestly I’d rather we go back to no reviews with the monstrosity it’s become and the missed calls are part of the lore of the game unless you can get it to the point where it can be solved in the time space of a tv timeout and that counts as your one for the 5 min or half period of play.
So surprise, Sphere is basically a killer venue for anything.
And imagine having Celine Dion announce you as a draft pick. How is she even able to do this…?…she must be doing better? She looked great.
Well the Utah owners seem super doochey
12. Minnesota Wild
Zeev Buium, D
Team: Denver (NCHC) | Rank: 6
DOB: 12/07/05 | Ht: 6-0 | Wt: 183 | Shot: L
2023-24 stats: GP: 42 | G: 11 | A: 39 | P: 50
Scouting notes: One of the best defensemen in college hockey this season, Buium is confidently projected as a top-4 defenseman in the NHL. He consistently stands out by joining the rush, defending well in transition and excelling in man-to-man defense in his own zone. He's an elite two-way defenseman at the college level, and is likely the most efficient puck mover in this draft class. He shows elite hockey sense and seems to be two to three plays ahead, allowing him to make plays that other players can't.
Defensively, he maintains a tight gap, adapts to changes in pace and uses excellent edgework to avoid getting beaten in tight situations. His puck skills, combined with various head and shoulder fakes, enable him to create space and passing lanes. If there is a better one-on-one defenseman in this draft, I've yet to see him.
Buium elevates his play as games intensify and was one of Team USA's best players at the World Juniors as an underage player, in addition to being a crucial part of the NCAA champion Denver blue line. With all the qualities of a play-driving, momentum-shifting defenseman, Buium could be ready for the NHL by the end of the 2024-25 college season. -- Doerrie
Team fit: GM Bill Guerin got aggressive here to select Zeev Buium, and rightfully so. Buium has a high hockey IQ and can be someone that can run an NHL power play, leading all NCAA defenseman in points last season (50). Denver depended on him big time in winning the national title this season -- he played 31 minutes against Boston University in the semifinal and more than 29 minutes against Boston College for the title.
He's an impact player and the highest defenseman the Wild have taken since Matt Dumba at seventh overall in 2012. -- Wyshynski
The New York Islanders with the 20th pick took Cole Eiserman.
Is Garth Snow going to have him sign mid season? 😉
Blackhawks trade up for a 3rd first round pick. Wow.
five 1st rounders in two years.
Are we gonna see no Gopher first rounders?

It amazes me how Tampa and Vegas always are able to continue to add high payroll players every year. Will Tampa find a way to keep Stamkos?

I tee'd that one up for you.
I do have to give Tampa and Vegas credit for using the LTIR rules to their advantage and having owners willing to spend money in a unique way.

agreed. All the fan bases pissed about them doing it also wouldn’t be mad if their team did it and won a cup.
also can’t see any way stammer stays based on the initial contract they offered. And tbh, idk if I’d want him at the price he’s going to ask for the player he is at this age

wonder why they're doing it like this? my understanding is the NHL still hits you for the AAV, no matter how you get there. would imagine this one will hurt towards the back end of his career, but good on Guentzel's agent for getting the extra years at that high an AAV.

As I understand it, the Salary + Signing Bonus both count toward his salary cap number, but in the event the team would want to buy him out, they would need to still pay the signing bonus for those years and only save the salary figure-- yet the AAV over the term is what counts against the dead cap.
Basically, doing it this way makes it resistant to a buyout.
It's not just the LTIR stuff. Brisbois knows that you can't win in a salary cap league by paying guys for what they used to be.Amazing what a GM who understands the salary cap can doIt amazes me how Tampa and Vegas always are able to continue to add high payroll players every year. Agree, ⚡️ rolled it back in 22-23 after 3 straight trips to Finals, then last year dealt with Sergechev injury & lost in first round to champs. But…consecutive first round playoff exits means smart GM’s make significant changes going into next season & that’s exactly what Brisbois is doing. It's not just the LTIR stuff. Columbus is perfect for Evason. Being a terrible playoff coach won't matter if you don't make the playoffs.
I’m glad Dean got the Columbus job because I think he’s more than a decent human being. That said, I’m not sure he’s anything more than an AHL caliber Head Coach (which can be interpreted as an indictment regarding Billys HC choices during his Wild tenure).
@j22 Nothing matters if you don't have goaltending.
And now we have "Billy's Guy." Who might be perfect for MN. Ooof

@team2tank Lost in 1st Round x 3 = not sure he’s anything more than an AHL caliber HC☝️
Half joking, half serious. Maybe the Wild can trade Freddy to Columbus?
@bearpaw28 AHL caliber coaches don't get to the playoffs let alone 3 straight year & don't carry a well above .600 winning percentage in the NHL. Especially with the pieced together roster the Wild have right now.
The biggest reason for his firing was "Billy" is getting desperate & had to bring in his career .500 coach. 4 playoffs appearances in 15 years, all first round exits. What is that an ECHL caliber coach? Wooof
Bad coaches make the playoffs a lot. Even bad teams make the playoffs in the NHL.
Evason did well with the teams he was given, until the playoffs. He was exposed badly in the playoffs, multiple times.
@j22 Bad coaches and teams don't make the playoffs routinely 3 years in a row and just get flat out lucky 3 regular seasons in a row with that type of winning percentage.
You might have some points on the playoffs although I would argue goaltending and goaltending decisions were right up there as well.
I'll leave it at this, a coach putting together what Dean did in MN is 100% getting another NHL job versus going back to the AHL. Every day of the week.
In fact any coach putting together that run is getting a shot to dig themselves out of their first hole but "Billy" had to make a move to help showcase it looked like he knew what he was doing. The move had nothing to do with the playoffs.
Wasn't Dean's playoffs results just as poor before arriving in Minnesota?

He's 1-17 in postseason series, combined WHL, AHL, and NHL. 0-11 in the AHL and NHL.
Pleased for Dean he got another NHL head coaching job. Time will reveal his HC prowess…but since he’s no longer coaching the Wild…it’s a moot point.Wasn't Dean's playoffs results just as poor before arriving in Minnesota?
