So long as the refs swallow their whistles for sticks to the kidney, there will be goons around ready to fight.

The fans and for some reason media hate for Dumba shows what a backwards non-hockey market Dallas is. That was a great hit with an unfortunate result of his head hitting the ice…not Dumba’s fault in the least.

Clean or not, I'd be pretty pissed off if it is Kaprizov laying on the ice concussed.

We have several people on here asking for retribution on Suter (or Robertson) for Suter's actions against Kaprizov...

Are we really that different?

I hate Dallas, and am still bitter we lost the North Stars.  From their point of view, I understand the sentiment.  While it was a hockey play, and certainly within the rules, there was some intent behind.  Which is also allowed, but it wasn't your average, run of the mill check.  If Hakanpaa laid out Kaprizov similarly... we'd be doing the exact same thing.  At least I would, maybe you're better than me.  I'd be pissed.

So you’d be mad at the ice?

And you’re making a false equivalency. There’s many reasons for the Suter hate from Wild fans: he’s a DB, he spent many years as a very negative influence on this franchise, he’s a former Badger. If the Dallas fans want to hate Dumba cause he used to play for the Eagles I can sympathize with that.

So if somebody boards a guy and his head hits the boards/glass... we cannot be mad at the player - we have to be mad at the boards/glass.  Without the hit, it is very unlikely Pavelski smashes his head on the ice.  Dumba hit him, an injury was the result.  I am just saying I can understand their frustration.

I hate players on certain teams for a variety of reasons.  Nobody has to agree with them.  I don't like players who wear tinted visors.  Am I am backwards fan of hockey and the Wild? I don't think their dislike for Dumba makes them a backwards fanbase, it makes them fans of their team who are frustrated.

I honestly couldn't give a rip what happens to Suter.  The best message to send would be sending Dallas home packing after Game 4 on Xcel Ice.  That would be fantastic.

Um…………………..nevermind

Why do you keep comparing hypothetical cheap/dirty penalties to a perfectly clean and legal hit? They're not close to similar events of a hockey game.

I am not going to apologize for having empathy for another teams fans who are upset about missing a key player in the playoffs.  I'd be frustrated too.

I said the reason for not liking a player doesn't have to be an illegal action.  I hate Patrick Kane for his stupid shootout move.  It isn't illegal, it also doesn't mean I have to like him.

I think you're misreading why people are annoyed by the Dumba hate. The haters are ignoring that it was a clean hit, including the Stars writer previously cited with a Tweet. I can't thing of a single LEGAL play that's gone against a team I support that would result in me calling for that player to become a target for violent retaliation.

Twitter and fb is pretty interesting and fun to read after the hit on Pavelski... 99.9% of the hockey world saying clean hit by Dumba vs. 110% of Dallas Stars fans calling for Dumba's head.

I finally looked up a video of Dumba’s hit.  Legal or not, what is the purpose of a high speed impact type hit like that whether the guy has the puck or not - other than intent to injure (and risk injury yourself?) Is that kind of behavior really necessary in the grand scheme of the game?  Risking injury and just making everyone pissed off at one another?  I dislike that the NHL is becoming a glorified battleground instead of focusing on the skill of the game and find all the stoppages for fights annoying. (At least to me it seems there are far more fights lately).   I guess the fans sure seem to like it.  ?‍♀️

My opinion.   You don’t have to be a dick if you don’t agree. I’ll go find some clouds to yell at or something. ?

He’s definitely trying to send a message, or make everyone pissed off at each other as you put it. Why? Likely benefits the Wild to have it that way.

Now, I don’t think he expects Pavelski to be so unaware and go down like that. Hartman being in the area and sticks being up high likely made him flinch at the exact wrong moment.

As for whether or not it is necessary, that’s completely subjective. That’s the problem. We change the rules to try and legislate hits like that out, we’re leaving  the officials out there to determine what is necessary. Not sure how I feel about that.

The physical play and animus between the two teams were ramping up pretty fast by the time the hit happened. It was a classic playoff hockey game with both teams refusing to back down.

Neither team was headhunting, but they weren't holding back either. Guys were running Spurgeon and Brodin into the glass, and cheap-shot artist Suter was taking liberties with his stick against the face of the Wild's franchise. That kind of play gets your blood up and energizes your team.

The question about Dumba's hit implies that in the split-second heat of the moment, one can rationally go through some mental checklist about how hard to check one's opponent. Pavelski was coming in pretty hard himself, so Dumba had to firm up and lurch toward him for the hit. If he hadn't, he would have been steamrolled himself. I think Pavelski got caught looking down at the puck. Had he been prepared, it would have ended like most checks do and nobody would even be talking about it.

I didn’t grow up playing hockey so I don’t understand all the nuances.  Is the goal simply to knock the player off the puck in a situation like that? even though I don’t think Pavelski even had it at that point but you can’t stop the momentum of a train on a dime.  ?

If I was a Dallas fan I think I would be more upset by the Hartman boarding that was called. Though it didn’t happen in this case that is a hit with higher injury probability, IMO.

The goal is to make Pavelski and every other Dallas player not want to take the puck, and/or himself anywhere near the Minnesota net.

The more I watch the Dumba hit, the more I don't like it.  It's not the check itself.  He didn't leave his feet, and it was a shoulder-on shoulder hit.

The reason I don't like it because this wasn't a case of a player already committed to the check and not being able to stop in a fraction of a second.  I would understand that.  In this case, Dumba changed his angle toward Pavelski AFTER the puck was already gone.  To me, that's interference at the very least.

I get that unnecessary hits (with intention to punish, and not to play the puck) aren't illegal in the NHL like they are in USA Hockey, but I wish they were.

Wow… Suter is an embarrassment when it comes to hockey fights. All 3 of his opponents wanted to fight. He just grab on and try to use his leverage to wrestle them down.

You mean, hockey fights are an embarrassment...

I wouldn’t have had any problem with Dumba getting called for interference on that hit. How Domi dropped his gloves and Dumba did nothing and got a roughing penalty was odd.

After KK received that second shot in the ribs, he was clearly in pain. It was an egregious cheap shot that should have been called and wasn't.

Again, absent those calls, teams are forced to instruct their players to take care of their own. Want to change the fighting? Make those calls and make them hurt.

Suter knows exactly what he's doing and that shot of his was designed to make contact where the padding is the lightest.

The Stars called up Riley Tufte.  He was a pansy in HS and at UMD.  Used is height as his intimidation... I doubt most to any NHL'er sees Tufte as threat.

@hockeybum part of playing a body check is also making contact after a player moves the puck and separating them from getting to the puck, the window to do this is small. The reason the penalty got called is because Pavelski had his head down and got lit up. Guarantee if the exact same play happened and Pavelski's head is up and Dumba simply stands him up, no call because he did nothing wrong.

From the athletic

Evason was especially delighted with the fact that Dumba didn’t take any undisciplined penalties when the Stars challenged him after the check on Pavelski, which was late and hard but within the 0.6-second window of permissible contact after a player gives up the puck.

was there a minor called on Dumba for the hit or was hit a result of a made‐up roughing call after the fact?

@streakygopher The refs kinda covered their butts by calling a 5 minute on Dumba, so they could review it. Since they called the 5, they then could downgrade it to a 2 after a review, but could not eliminate it. So he ended up with a 2. So technically he got 2 for the hit, but got nothing for the scrum with Domi. ( but I think that is what the penalty really was for )

The NHL allows their refs to completely rescind the penalty after review. Dumba was only penalized for roughing because of the bullshit started by Domi.

I think this year might be the first where erasing the penalty completely was an option.

If called properly, the Dumba play should've resulted in a 7 minute PP for the Wild.

Can we all just chuckle a bit that even Brock Faber admits he was lucky and that dramatic save was somewhat necessary because he was out of position against his man?

I mean, incredible effort and great save.  But a bit self-inflicted.

Shouldn't KK have gotten a penalty for jumping into the fight where a ref was already engaged? I am not sure of the rule.

I am expecting a tightly called game tonight that could result in a lot of PPs. If they don't call things early this could get messy.

I'm just the messenger.... ?

But curious.  Given Gus played almost two games there may be concern about fatigue, maybe it's a gut feeling, or it could be as simple as Dean decided he wants to rotate.

What really stinks is Hartman being out, that's a big loss.

I get the extra long game 1, but this makes no sense at all. Gustavsson just stopped 51 of 53 shots and he's 24 years old; I think he'd be just fine. The Wild just can't help dicking around with the goaltending.

Erf. That was suboptimal.

Spurg with a bad read and Johansson with a brutal angle.

Fleury flailing around like a guy who's never even seen a hockey game before.

That’s his “style”

I would love to see Zuccarello sitting in the press box on Friday. The dude has been terrible for a month.

The goal seems to have energized the Wild. Hopefully it carries to the second.

MAF is like Jim Craig.  When he's good he can be unbelievable.  It's lightening in a bottle but as he gotten older those moments are fleeting.

But like Craig, when he's bad he's really brutal.

@chris83 That and when do you ever not ride a red hot goalie in the playoffs, not just in the last game but for the last few months? Truly bizarre?
