We’re here, checked in and lounging. Our hotel gave us vouchers for a drink after 8, tonight and tomorrow. Weekends excluded lol. Still, a nice gesture.
Plane down was full of hockey fans, loads of hockey conversations overheard. And on a personal note, I was finally able to snag a Delta trading card for a CRJ900! I’ve completed the set! I was thrilled and the pilot was excited I was excited 😃

Several of us drove and are all working our way into town right about now. We had hoped to leave earlier and maybe catch a little of the practices today but we had a little too much fun in Des Moines last night. 😂

I'm only commenting because I own a map...why in the hell did you go that far out of the way to go to Des Moines? There is that whole Avenue of the Saints road thing you know! 🤣

@g-manpuck looks like a good way to avoid Iowa City
Avenue of the Saints goes by Iowa City...not through. I can see wanting to avoid Cedar Rapids...that IS the armpit of Iowa and no other city comes close to the shithole that is CR. After doing a quick Google map search, going the Des Moines route only adds about a 1/2 hour.

We got in a couple of hours ago. Man what a boring drive. At least there was minimal traffic.
We saw the Iowa Hawkeye football trailer / semi parked outside of Iowa City - that was our exciting landmark.
We'll be doing the obligatory visit to AB for the brewery tour and tasting and hitting up the arch (we have a first timer with us).
@g-manpuck Waterloo seems like a worse town than CR. I try to get through there as fast as the lights allow me.

Let me guess....you followed Hwy 218 through Waterloo? Take Hwy 58 south to Hwy 20 then over to I-380. Fewer stop lights and you stay out of Waterloo.

Better hotel points options and some breweries.
was hoping the Iowa Wild would be in town.
Des Moines is a fun city, been there for the Iowa deer classic, kinda reminded me of st.paul with all the bars by the event center.😁

Des Moines has done a lot of work since Wells Fargo Arena opened. Was kind of rough area before then.

Looks like the Dayton's logo!

Every time I drive through Iowa a storm follows me down 35.
Way too much fun on night 1. Not sure if I can keep this pace up.

yes indeed!! We found a place that makes slushy drinks to go and walked back to our hotel with said drink in hand. The weather is amazing! Doing the arch tomorrow and some hockey. Doesn’t get much better. 😁
We walked around Union Station, pretty dull. Maybe with more people. Had a drink at Maggie O’Briens.
Found a really fabulous breakfast spot, White Knight Diner. What a dive! But the food was great. Line out the door when we left. Think Mikey’s but grittier.

The only time that my wife and I have stayed in downtown St. Louis we went to Union Station as well and like you we were underwhelmed. That was in 2003, sad that they haven't upped their game with it steps from the Enterprise Center.

The Union Station Hotel has a fabulous light/video show projected onto the lobby arched ceiling. We wandered in by chance, I think it’s every hour on the hour. Free, you don’t have to be guest to sit down and enjoy. Theme is under the sea, at one point it’s like your inside a sunken wooden ship seeing fish and turtles swimming in the openings.
After the show is over the ornate lobby itself is gorgeous. Lobby is the old seating area of the original train station, stained glass windows, tile work, etc.

Besides the schools playing, I think the Gophers and pioux are the most represented schools in terms of apparel we’ve seen.
We did the morning at the St. Louis zoo. Pretty good for a free zoo.
Then had lunch at “The Hill”. Essentially the St. Louis version of Little Italy. Definitely worth it if you’re mobile / have a car. We specifically ate at Anthoinos, but any place in here would be good. They have delis too

So far St Louis has been fun ( minus the teams --yawn-- at the FF ). Today and tomorrow downtown will be interesting with the Cardinals games. The Cards game tomorrow is at 115, so may have to move pregaming more towards the hockey arena. The Village by the Ballpark will be SRO as it is one of the main hubs for fans. Good meals and good service so far. Digging the car out today and exploring some of the suburbs. We have seen a couple of homeless people but nothing alarming. Meeting up with friends has been the highlight so far this trip.

@frozen4champs take a trip toThe Hill, great Italian restaurants, gelato and shops. Hope to see GPLer’s tomorrow at the baseball game.
Chava’s Mexican restaurant in Soulard was excellent! Neighborhood is great!
Enjoying my sample at AB. Had a great tour guide (Hayley).
So what channel is the Hobey Baker award going to be shown on?
Aloha!

I was watching something on NHL Network yesterday and I believe I remember seeing a promo saying they were carrying it.
Pretty sure NHL network
For those not in STL:
The Good: Food, drinks, hotels. Games were solid showcasing some great skill. Rink is decent with drink options everywhere.
The Bad: Rink is COLD. They keep the place quite chilly. Concourses are wide but between games was so congested you couldn't even move. Bathrooms are slow and some food stands had very long waits.
Town is quiet. Lots of college jerseys everywhere, but the lack of people generally downtown means there doesn't feel like there is a local buzz. It has been fun, but I would prefer Tampa or Chicago personally!

Yes on the freezing cold arena!! Especially upstairs under the vents. Def wearing more clothing tomorrow. It was only the men’s bathrooms that had lines. 😂
I bet the town will be more of a zoo through the weekend with the ballgames.
We are out brewery hopping. Some solid places so far.
Looked like a lot of empty seats last night. I don’t know if it filled up for the second game but just off the face off circle far right from camera view there were multiple rows of seats open from the glass on up about 8 rows. Just curious if anyone there noticed that?
It filled up a lot near the end of the first game. I suspect you were seeing PSU or BU school sections, there were a couple fairly empty areas early. Same for the last game, the Denver section was pretty empty
B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?
@steve-mn makes sense cuz my thought was a student fan bus didn’t make it or something. I didn’t even try to stay up for the second game.🥱
FYI-- Don't know it this is ticket scanned or sold..

didn’t feel like it but is also the joy of single ticket for both games as you also clearly didn’t see much of PSU and bu fans at the first game and next to no du fans at the late one

hoping so for the weekend. Been very quiet so far. We hit 4 hands (ok) and side project (outstanding) today with bluewood (very solid) yesterday. Been a fun trip so far even if the hockey has been meh. As per usual just a ton of gopher fans everywhere
We had BBQ at Pappy’s today. The ribs are phenomenal! The line can be very long so if you are a good Minnesotan, just order online and pick up and eat outside.

Yes, the "true" number will be tomorrow. There are a LOT of tickets for sale on Ticketmaster for the championship game. Some going for as low as $50 and it looks like over 1,000 tix available. We sat in the club level near the Western fans and our area was fairly full.

We did Pappys for lunch yesterday! Pulled pork sandwich and ribs, split semi equally between us. There was a tussle for the last rib. We picked up and ate back at our hotel. Delicious! showed this to my girlfriend so she would know what she’s missing at Frozen four’s aside from the games, (planting a little seed here)😉 her response was “those look like trouble”😂

LOL....when they showed future sites last night I planted a seed about Washington DC. Would like to go whether Minnesota makes it or not. I have no interest in Vegas unless MN makes it next year, then we would consider a last minute trip.

I sold some beers to a guy at AC/DC from the St. Louis area. He told me about Pappy’s. He said the lines can be long, but the lines go quickly. Had it on my list when we go to St. Louis next week. Though those plans have change until a future family vacation.

Why does seeing someone who is homeless matter?

It doesn't. I should have added this first---"I had people tell me how bad downtown STL was" So, I was expecting something different than what is actually is. We have had zero issues. Just like when we went to Detroit. Zero problems at that FF.

Thank you for all the St.Louis reports! The only part of that town I’ve seen was where the Griswalds’ had their hub caps stolen by the comadores’ while asking for directions to get back on the freeway.😂
