Jaxon Nelson had another strong game, adding his first of the tournament with a great individual effort in the second period. Nelson won a footrace to a loose puck off a defensive zone draw, chipping it off the boards to center ice. The Magnolia, Minnesota native then barreled towards the goal, ripping a shot top-shelf to tie the game at three. Nelson also showed chemistry with Adam Mechura, as the two had several dominant shifts, resulting in scoring chances.

The real season hasn’t even started and he’ll be out a few weeks after getting injured in a fight. I see why they didn’t want to offer more than a 1 yr. contract. 😬

“Ryan Lindgren admirably stood up for his teammate, but he paid a dear price.
The Rangers are expecting their top-pair defenseman to miss "at least a few weeks," according to a person with knowledge of the situation, who spoke to lohud.com, part of the USA TODAY Network, on the condition of anonymity. The team is calling it an upper-body injury, and while it's unconfirmed if it stemmed directly from a first-period fight with Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield during Tuesday's 6-4 preseason win at Madison Square Garden, Lindgren appeared bloodied and dazed following an uppercut punch that ended the scrap and did not return to the game.” It’s an exhibition game, U got Matt Rempe sitting on the bench…gotta be smarter about this stuff RL.
Can’t believe the amount of animosity I’ve seen in some preseason games already. People are too angry. It’s a game ffs.
It's actually kind of typical in pre-season from what I've seen. Too many fans should apparently be going to MMA matches rather than Hockey games, because I think a lot of the fights in the pre-season are either a player trying to ensure they make the team by being "the tough guy" or are pure fanservice (I remember there were some pre-season games at Target Center while the Xcel Center was being built. One of them I was at had 3 different full-on fights, and it was pretty apparent that they were just putting on a show).
I'll admit that, once upon a time, I was in that group of fans, but, as greater understanding has been found of the consequences, my attitude has changed completely. If I could wave my magic wand, fighting would be a 5 minute major + game DQ + 5 game suspension for the first offense of the season. 10 games for the next, then done for the season after that (and if in the last month of the season, through the playoffs and halfway through the next season). And yes, I would also crack way down on checking from behind/etc as well (any Major penalty that results in an injury, the offending player is suspended until the injured player returns. If the injured player never makes it back, neither does the offender). Draconian? Yes. Any chance of happening? Of course not.
Lindgren is a tough as nails player, but he seems to put himself in bad spots and has endured numerous injuries because of it. I hope when he returns, he plays a toned down game.

Between his conditioning, not playing defense, and the limited offensive production that isn’t going to be better at age 37, I kinda think Phil is done in the NHL.

I went to one of those games (maybe the Jets/Coyotes...it was a loooooooong time ago) and good lord it was Slap Shot level stupid the fighting. Watching the fans foam at the mouth over it really was the beginning of my hatred of fighting in hockey.
Faber hit Crosby near the wall, and Crosby locked them up so they both went into the boards. Crosby then got up and took a few shots at Faber when he was down. Faber took exception and went after him when he got up. That’s when the other guy came in and dropped his gloves.

The only times I’ve seen Crosby try to fight is by jumping on an opposing players back. Makes sense cause according to UND’s #1 fan Rick Haley, Crosby was supposed to go the UND. And UND players are famous for jumping on backs when they want to “scrum”.
Let's not call it other than what it is...NO teammate of Crosby is going to let him fully get into a fight even if he starts it. Would any teammate let Kaprisov stay in a fight? Hell no.

Has Kaprisov ever done what Crosby did - start shit while a player was down, engage in a scrum and then let it escalate to the point that a teammate had to step in?
Well, not every time! Billy Guerin had a front-row ticket to the tilt!
Just about every time. There may not be guys on teams like McSorley or Probert whose only job was to protect the golden boys on their team. Crosby, Matthews, or McDavid and the like more times than not will not be left hung out to fight their own fight...whether they started it or not.

Let’s just ban fighting in hockey, kick ‘em out of the game if they do it. Then nobody has to worry about it and we can focus on hockey. 😁
I agree 100%, but unfortunately until the NHL steps up and agrees to punish the crap out of goonery (slew-footing, egregious CFB and cross-checking, etc.) they're going to allow fighting.
I see Chaz Lucius is still battling through injuries. He has had season ending injuries four years straight, including his year with the Gophers. And he has played in only 3 of Manitoba’s 8 games this season.
Cruz Lucius is also not playing at ASU to start the season.
So annoying to see a few Gophers fans chirping that tweet.
Also annoying...getting chirped by Maverick fans when he scores. I have a few friends that have been doing that this season. They just can't grasp that I'm cheering for him to do well.

yeah seems best for both parties he moved on. wish him success all year unless we see them in the postseason where I hope he takes one is boneheaded 10 minute misconduct penalties
i expect he’ll put up good numbers this year. His ability to put up points has never been a question
I know he wasn't here for long, but I do like him. And, let's be honest, anyone that thought the #1 overall pick was going to play in college for long was delusional, he was the first #1 overall to play in college in decades.
When they had the charity game with the NHL players for Defending the Blue Line the one strike/lockout/whatever year, I ended up winning the auction for his jersey.
Does anyone have any insight into finding rosters from U of M freshman teams or JV teams? A family friend of my in laws recently passed away and his obituary stated he played for the gophers in the 1960s I couldn’t find his name on the official rosters in that time frame but I know we had JV and freshman teams in that era but i cannot find any rosters. I’d love to find a photo or something and send it to my wife’s grandpa because he would love it! Figured this was the best place to ask around.

Mike Reilly will be out indefinitely as the defenseman will undergo a procedure on Tuesday to address a preexisting, but previously uncovered heart condition, Islanders President of Hockey Ops and General Manager Lou Lamoriello announced on Monday afternoon.
Lamoriello said the issue was found during routine tests after Reilly's concussion on Nov. 1 in Buffalo. The condition is unrelated to the hit, and subsequent injury, Reilly suffered in Buffalo. Lamoriello also said Reilly has been cleared from the concussion.
"It was picked up through the different echocardiograms that you do for different reasons that you go through with any post-concussion situation," Lamoriello said.
While the hit was obviously scary in the moment, Lamoriello said the silver lining was finding this previously unknown issue.
"It's probably a blessing in disguise of what transpired," Lamoriello added. "They detected this, something that you're sometimes born with, but never knew."

Gopher Hockey History is a pretty good source, although I've found player searches aren't always the best.
I think freshman teams (in almost all sports) were a thing until 1968. The Gopher J.V. team was around until maybe the late ‘70s or maybe even the early ‘80s. Wisconsin had a hockey J.V. team, but I don’t recall other WCHA teams having one. The Gopher team played mostly MIAC teams and the odd game against the Vulcans or maybe Jr. Stars (I don’t remember how late they were around). I went to a few J.V. games back in the day and probably had a roster or two laying around here until the great purge of about 15 years ago.
The JV team lasted into the 80s, Bob Shier coached them for their last few seasons.

When we were in Anchorage a few years back we went to Odd Man Rush brewery - hockey themed of course. We were delighted to find an old Gopher jersey on the wall. We were told the jersey was from one of the owners relatives who played for the UMN. I think it was Harry McDonald (if the pic is correct) and similar era, but same thing - def not on the official roster but could not find any club or jv team info anywhere. I emailed vintage mn (he never got back to me either with any info). If you find anything, let us know, good luck! Maybe reach out to the athletic dept. to see if they have any ideas on avenues to try?
Hoping we play in Fairbanks in the next couple years, and if so we can make it back to visit!
