They started to pick up a bit closer to the end of the period. Most of that twenty though, yikes. Not nearly good enough.
I can’t believe how bad our PP is with the talent we have on the ice.
It’s definitely not why we are losing but it’s infuriating to watch. Honestly what irks me more is the number of time Moore has beaten a guy with speed this year only to get held or even tackled in some cases for no call. His game will improve in the NHL solely because of regular season not big ten reffing.Notre Dame’s stick work is incredible! It’s like they all are going for a minor in lumber jacking. I’m surprised they haven’t been called for more. *But that isn’t why we are losing.
That was a bad period though, they look sloppy partly because ND is good defensively and partly because the chemistry in the passing game is once again suspect. They also just don’t have the scoring depth at center that they used to, farm kid would probably be doing just fine in this series and is badly missed. This team lacks the size/strength to play that down low grind game effectively like he did.

That last one was hard to watch, like eyes bleeding Clockwork Orange levels.
yeah thank you for posting what was in my head. Everyone said this years team would be better than last. Not so sure I am drinking that koolaid at this point. We need a Nelson and I thought Wood would be that guy. He is not. He has been good in other aspects but wow. There are holes in our team that are BIG. Notre Dame is playing well and exposing every single weakness we have and honestly there are more than I would have thought. Show some heart guys. They played well enough to win both Friday and Saturday. That is not going to be good enough going forward. Show that you want it. You have the team to get it
Well, it was said this would be a good match up for Minnesota to get them tournament ready. Play a defensive, shutdown team they said because that's what the playoffs are like.
How they doin'?
They haven't had a strong second half and looked beatable long before Huglen got hurt. Now, they're missing their top center and have a goaltending problem. March slumps generally don't end well.
One shot game baby. Go out and do it

I am fully and utterly on the cliff again
If they can’t end Notre Dame’s season in a three game series at home, how are they doing it in the NCAAs against much better competition?
Welp, my emotions have been kicked in the seeds once again!

Next up, Holy Cross.
Well, we know this. Airey isn't the answer. We should be working the portal again.
Whoever said uninspiring play is 100% on point. This team is disinterested and going through the motions. I will support them but if I were an underdog in the NCAAs looking for an ideal match up we are looking to be that. We are a very beatable team.
Motzko looks as defeated as his team.
Rough game for koster.
Cue the Jimmy "unacceptable" speech.

Try scoring more than a goal or two a game against this ND team.

U of M lost the opportunity to sell 10,000 tickets next week.
This is our third game in a row against the same exact defense. How is it possible that between the coaches and our players that they haven’t figured out a way to generate high quality scoring chances. I am typing with high emotions and I am sure that I am missing the mark on my thoughts.
Cya in 3 fucking weeks. Embarrassing.
@boats 3 weeks for them to stew in their own juices while their legs go cold.
If I remember correctly, the last time they had a two week rest they dropped a turd.
I will wait until after I have slept on it to really comment on this game but all I will say is, wow. This weekend was the exact opposite of what this team needed. I’ve been defending this team and tried to stay “glass half full” this whole up and down second half but I’m grasping at straws at the moment to find something to be positive about.

How on Earth can you not figure a way around that style of play with the talent you have. Blame the goalies if you want. I think otherwise. If you cannot score or even control the puck in your own end you are done. Like dinner. I can accept if my team does not match up talent wise with another team. So much more frustrating to watch the overloaded talent tank. They better figure it out and fast or it will be a quick post season. They should be as embarassed as I am
I thought that was covered by the uninspiring play. But Airey didn't look the part at all. He is fine for a backup goalie but he was regularly out of position and looked like he didn't know what to do. We can't have that be our only option next year.Well, we know this. Airey isn't the answer. We should be working the portal again.

There are NO excuses for the way the rest of the team played. They looked absolutely terrible across the board today. Blame should go everywhere players and coaches.
That said, I will be cheeringthem on in the NCAAs but I don't expect to get out of the regional. I hope I am wrong.

I am on the wagon until the end, but man, it's a rough ride.

It's obvious Micheletti is upset. He correctly called out Snuggerud and Moore tonight. They constantly skated into traffic, losing possession time and again.
In his post game comments he was desperately trying to find something positive to say. Probable is, there isn't anything. He was also trying not to say the obvious: A three week wait will cook their goose.

I’m worried Huglen died of dysentery.

Agree. Whoever the gophers get in round one isn’t afraid of this team right now. What a difference a week makes, I felt so good about them a week ago.
I think my wagon is on the prairie on fire. I am a die hard fan but this level of talent playing like this is just so disheartening. I will still cheer but some of my positive attitude has been chipped away. Find some fire guys. Maybe just play the 4th line all game? Seriously. Or play with a knee hockey net so in an actual game we can hit it? Not typically negative but this was a a tough one to swallow

The reason for this is that this team is mostly unwilling to play the style of grind it out offense that the ND defense gave us. That is why the 4th line looked so much better this weekend than every other line. I am not saying we need a team of grinders, but in hockey EVERYONE must grind and cycle.
And while this is a talented team in many ways, especially skating, it lacks some skills that are essential for winning big time hockey games. One skill we lack, even with Snuggerud, is shooting. Another is "hands". We are really a poor team in close to the goal both in scrums in front and on 1-1 breakaway type situation. Our shooters have a real hard time getting a shot off in any level of traffic and they are very poor at lifting shots above pad level from in close. (What makes this interesting is that I think a lot of our players are elite at catching passes, especially out of the air which usually translates better in shooting the puck).
We need some power play adjustment because when we are dropping the pass deep to the moving skater(s) Notre Dame just stood up 4 across the blue line and stopped our rushes cold there. The boys may not like it, but we need to dump that puck in deep with a purpose which means we need to have a plan to have guys moving to chase that dump in, instead of standing flat footed on the blue line watching their teammate stick handle.
Another adjustment we need to make on the PP is something that we (accidentally) scored a PP goal on. Have Jimmy flair out and the defensemen adjust to his movement, but then cut Oliver Moore through the seam created by the box adjustment. They are all mostly standign around on the PP just trying to set up a shot from the perimeter, sometimes with screens and sometimes without.
Gopher teams have played poorly in the conference playoffs and made it to Frozen Four before. But generally the NCAA playoffs have gone the way we finished the season.
I found it almost funny at the end of the game Kurth shoots from inside the blue line but won’t from Five feet out earlier, seemed like more than one occasion too. Just disappointed all around, my stomach hurts.
I am not disappointed, I’m actually angry. Playing with the puck in the defensive, neutral zone and offensive zone against this style of defense. They went for the cutesy nifty pass or the I’m going to deke out 3 players move instead of getting the puck deep. Notre Dame seemed to generate all of their offensive opportunities off of our mental mistakes. Now everyone knows the recipe to defeat us, we will be facing this exact style the rest of the way. I have watched the Gophers religiously since 86’ and this might be the most frustrating team to cheer for. Airey played alright, but doesn’t seem like he will steal us a game. Almost plays uninspired. I would ride Liam the rest of the way. Just my 2¢, still speaking from a fragile emotional state.
In short, we'd rather look good and lose compared to looking ugly and win. To quote "White Men Can't Jump" (THIS IS NOTHING MORE THAN A MOVIE QUOTE):
a white man wants to win first look good second, a black man wants to look good first win second
Gophers want to look good first.

Our gophers in the past against the Seawolves faced this same defensive sit back style and it gave them fits too. The difference was those teams pounded out 60 shots and crashed the net with authority and mustered out a handful of goals to pull through. This team just seemed uninterested to put in that kind of work.
I wasn't nervous until Souliere gave up that second mistake on Friday. Souliere had played so well for over a month then those two mistakes Friday night? Airey is a big goalie who tries to block shots with his body. The problem is he gives up way too many rebounds. I will be very surprised if Coach Motzko doesn't go back to the experienced goalie (Souliere) for the NCAAs. Its very clear to me that Notre Dame wanted these games more than the Gophers. Whats frustrating is Michigan State will probably beat Notre Dame 4-1 next Saturday (and Say will look very average). The good news is the Gophers didn't end their season tonight.

We got out muscled/played/drive in our OWN END all night. We turned the puck over in our own end over and over and over again. Lost puck battles on the boards repeatedly. In our own end. We lost both games in our own end due to our own careless play. Leaving guys alone in front of our net, turning it over in front, passing to no one. There is plenty of blame to pass around. I just expect better as a 30+ year fan. I do appreciate Snuggarud's taking blame Friday but there is no excuse for tonight's game
Have to get to the nitty gritty to win a natty. If you end UP looking good, ok, bonus. Dirty work first.

Our guys were getting caught from behind on their back check that made us look like an Iowa driver in the passing lane. I’ve not seen that once all season till tonight. I got nothin.

They needed to score 4. Regardless of the offense this is how it's going for Airey:
At this point neither goalie has earned the next start outright.
To be fair to Souli his last 8:
Bob didn’t seem too worried on post game radio. Thinks they’ll get the goals. Just need to clean up a few things.
Not having to play ND will help. Them and MSU were the teams that had our number. Still worried a 3 week layoff will hurt but not thinking this team is all of a sudden the equivalent of Duluth this year.
I will reiterate. The goalies are not the main issue. Our inability to score on HUGE chances is an issue. Get in the paint. Everyone knows it. Just DO IT. PP = big problem. We have the players to be absolutely lethal on the man advantage and we cannot even control the puck. The PP scheme needs to change. It does not fit our players or they cannot execute it. Quit the drop pass/speed rush which is obviously not working and try another scheme. We have great offensive defensemen. GET THEM IN IT. This team has me so baffled
“Just need to clean up a few things” that’s a new one. 🙄
