THIS! We watched it earlier and again last night. Upper glove side is his weakness and yes, teams are fully aware of his kryptonite.
Note: Due to inflation dirty deeds will no longer be done dirt cheap.
Being the stats guy around here I might as well post this
This season
Souliere 13-7-2, 2.28 GAA, .918 saves %
Airey 11-2-2, 2.39 GAA, .905 saves %
Their GAA and saves % are closer than I'm guessing a lot of us (myself included) would have thought.

Personally, I put more stock into SV% vs GAA.
For example, GAA of 1, but only faced 10 shots, vs GAA of 2, but faced 50 shots. 😉
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
Guessing Liam gets the start for the opportunity to bounce back. More so due to the bigger picture to gain back confidence as we head into NCAA’s. But I’d be ok with either.
Game 1 is behind us now so need to reset and the entire team needs to start clicking better and start building momentum for a run.
Goaltending aside, the team looks out of sync at times as someone else stated. That shouldn’t be the case at this time of year and with our skill level.
they work their butts off along the wall etc then turn it over with an errant pass.
With the depth of our forwards, we’re at our best when we play with a relentless forecheck. We need to get back to continuously attacking and moving our feet. A couple guys that really make that happen for us when we’re at our best are 11, 74, 10 and 17, and 19. I’d love to see this group get rolling! #20 is playing really well
go gophers!
With his 10th goal last night, Rinzel is the 1st Gophers defenseman to score 10 goals in a season since Alex Goligoski in 05-06
I was recently informed by a GPLer that I'm related to Airey
Since I could watch the game last night, but saw the comments I had to watch the recording to see the 1st and 3rd goals. Less than ideal.
I know it sounds counterintuitive but if these were his only shaky plays I am not too worried about it. Fluky goals happen. I doubt he makes that pass again (lesson learned). I’d be more worried if his angles were bad and he was late squaring up, etc.
Again, I didn’t know watch the game. Maybe he was shaky throughout the 1st period. But if not, I’d play him.
I see Airey has the better record despite slightly worse stats. Did Souliere have the majority of the tough match ups? If he played tougher games and still had the better stats than we should also account for that.Being the stats guy around here I must as well post this

After we scored I was slapping my hands against the tailgate of the truck, my girlfriend says do that again!! I said you only do it when they announce the goal, she said no, I meant score!!
The first 27 games of the season Airey started 15 and Souliere started 12. They split the starts of ever series except the series at Notre Dame (late November) where Airey started both games.
Souliere has started 10 straight games.
I think that they played one of their better games last night that I’ve seen in awhile. I can’t think of too many times where we had letdowns and disappeared for any length of time. The game had ebbs and flows, but for the most part we were all over them in the attacking zone and our speed really created problems for ND. I thought we were moving our feet, hustled, won faceoffs, got most of the loose pucks, and had WAY more grade A chances. Obviously a couple of goalie gaffs cost us the game, but if we play like that tonight and tomorrow we’ll be fine.
Two things this team does NOT seem to to do well with is puck possession in the open ice (see 3x3 record), saw it a bit in 4x4 as well last night, and finishing. I’m not sure if the latter is fan bias, but between breakaways, missed open nets, shooting right into the goalies midsection on a point blank shot, etc. We seem to just not be able to finish our chances and then the other team comes down, gets one takeaway, and it’s in the back of our net. I don’t know if that’s just bad luck and we’ll start to get them to go out way or what. We’ve seen games where everything seemed to go in for them. That game could have been 8-2 last night.
Keep doing what we did last night and we’ll be fine. At least against ND.
I want Airey in net tonight after last nights ugly 3 goals given up
Aloha!
When 3 games are played, it's better to lose the second game than the first. I wouldn't be surprised if stats show the game 1 winner wins the majority of the time. Sweeping is hard, especially this time of year.
I'm trying to stay positive about this team but it's starting to feel like after getting beat up in the Big 10, they're not ready for the challenge of an NC run. With all due respect to Motzko who said this defense could be better than '23, I disagree.
Like '23, there is a 5th-year senior playing like it's his last season. It's time the other guys take his lead because 2 goals a night won't cut it.

I agree. He played 38 good minutes last night. He has more upside than Souliere and it’s not like Souliere has been dominant the past 10 games.

I think fan bias is a big part of this perception. You notice every time your team misses a scoring chance, but if opponents put a shot into your goalie's gut or miss the net, you forget about it quickly ('our goalie had that covered'). I suppose one could look at shooting percentages, but when you are the top goal-scoring team in the country someone is obviously finishing. Now on shootouts.....
Starting Airey tonight would be a panic move and would send a terrible message to the team

I'd need to run the numbers again, but before Souliere took over down the stretch Airey was getting about a goal to a goal and a half more offensive support then Liam was.
Just ran it:
Gophers goals per game scored in Airey started games: 4.53
Gophers goals per game scored in Souliere starts: 3.5 if you include last night.
Nearly exactly a goal a night more support.
Do they even let Bob in the arena tomorrow to coach game 2??
Do you ever have a thought that doesn't sound like idiotic ramblings of a 4 year old?
Was clearly a tongue-in-cheek comment to the hysteria that surrounds this program. I see it went right over your head. I have a feeling most things do in your life.

Well then we need to play Airey since he gets the offense going. 😀
To be fair Souliere did that yesterday, just for the wrong team 😆
The plan has clearly been to play Souliere in the playoffs. Play him tonight and if he loses the game you know what you need to do in the NCAAs.
This isnt all on goaltending. This team needs to be able to put up more than 2 on Notre Dame. They just do. If the offense is pointing at Souliere then we have lost already.
This team has everything they need to win it all. They need to want it though.
Where do you get expected goal stats?I don't even know what to say. I think i have to bite my tongue until tomorrow. But ND was supposed to be a cupcake.
xG 4-1.7. Shot attempt 68-35. They need to hit the fucking net and do a better job obstructing the goalies eyes. Souly can’t score on himself twice and I am sure he will say as much in that locker room.
were the better team, but you can’t gift wrap chances like that to ANYONE

Kinda agree but ND goalie stole it and Souliere did the opposite, was kinda hard to ignore. Ideally the gophers create even more chances and the expected goals are more like 5 or 6 but they fumbled one too many pucks and Moore continues to be snakebitten. I’m not worried about today I think they’ll bring a similar effort but not get memeworthy goaltending.
Starting Airey tonight would be a panic move and would send a terrible message to the team
I'm not sure that starting a goalie who came in last night to shut down ND after the starter gave up 2 of the worst goals given up in Gopher history is a terrible message. The fact is Souliere's numbers have started to creep up in the past month. Goalies have bad nights, so I hope it is a one off. I could see Bob starting either one tonight and I really can not argue with it. Bottom line is, I really don't care who starts as the Gophers should win regardless of who is in net.
I was recently informed by a GPLer that I'm related to Airey

I agree, it shouldn’t matter who’s in net against ND.
You really want to send a message? Dress Michel and start Wiese. Michel will bring the energy and they should still be able to win by a couple with Wiese in net.
i just don’t think we’re in “send a message” territory though. Compete like they did last night and the pucks will start going in. Just don’t give up the first goal again. If we get the first goal and force them to chase, I think the floodgates will open. First goal completely changes the complexion of the game
I honestly thought we were going to win last night, right up until time ran out. Even when we were down 2, I just felt like a comeback was inevitable but we just couldn’t finish our chances. We’re going to have a chip on our shoulder tonight and I could see a lopsided result.
I’m not sure looking at a two period sample where the gophers dominated and ignoring the entire season is the smarter move here lol.Starting Airey tonight would be a panic move and would send a terrible message to the team

In theory I think you can win with either goalie against Notre Dame but going forward Souliere should be the starter, he just gives the team a better chance to win.

I'd like for them to get to the front of the net more - that's how you score, especially when the other goalie is hot. Rebounds, traffic, jam it home. Too often they try for a pretty wrister, and goalies are just too good now to score consistently on those.
Kurth and Lamb score from the blue paint - they need EVERYONE to start going to the net and causing havoc in front.
IT'S AIREY TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let’s go Gophs!!

I appreciate the tongue in cheek nature and I bit on it. We'll done /p> we have had people say those things not in jest and I overreacted.
As for the rest of what you said...I'm not low iq, i can be a dick and I'm not sure the woman I have lived with the last decade would want me going out and talking to girls...maybe guys though!
I appreciate the concern, but my life will be fine without you pretending you know anything about me /p>

As for the game..I'm surprised they switched goalies. Not sure how to feel about that.

let’s all wait until after the game to discuss our feelings…😁
Hopefully they start fast, but not frantic. Get clean break outs out of our zone, get pucks to the net early and get the first goal. Let’s go!

Airey didn’t lose the job as much as Souliere took it. Well last night he came back to earth and we’re now not in a position to allow him to work thru it. For whatever reason he looked very shaky…maybe there’s a reason who knows but Airey has really not done anything to play himself out of a chance, he’s 11-2-2
Yeah that’s his record when the team was scoring more. I can’t think of a single game he’s stolen unlike Souliere.
Hopefully this is just being used as a wake up call for the latter and also hopefully we don’t lose because of it lol.
Rough ice tonight? Have seen a few stumbles on both teams....
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
0-0 after 1 isn’t exactly what I was hoping for after last night but ok.
Airey had no chance on that one. Ugh.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
There were Gophers standing or just spinning in circles on that one. Frustrating to see.Airey had no chance on that one. Ugh.
Yeah Airey has been solid no complaints there, not generating a ton of great chances on the other end despite the possession disparity.
If a fire isn't currently lit under their asses, it's gonna be a short post-season.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
The Gophers are staring at 2 bye weeks right now.
edit: refs finally call something lol
