All three Big Ten home teams lost tonight in game one of their playoff series. #4 Maine lost 5-1.
It sucks to lose tonight but goaltending was clearly the difference. If the goaltending is more even the next two nights I like our chances.
I’d go with Airey
I don't even know what to say. I think i have to bite my tongue until tomorrow. But ND was supposed to be a cupcake.
No one is a cupcake in the playoffs. If one has an attitude like that, one is going home.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.

Goaltending is the great equalizer. Anybody who says Notre Dame is a cup cake discounts that somebody has to be the worst team in a tough conference and that doesn't mean they are a push over.
Notre Dame recently beat Wisconsin at the Kohl Center 6-1.
Wisconsin tonight beat Ohio State (who is a top 10 team) 4-1 in Columbus, OH.

xG 4-1.7. Shot attempt 68-35. They need to hit the fucking net and do a better job obstructing the goalies eyes. Souly can’t score on himself twice and I am sure he will say as much in that locker room.
were the better team, but you can’t gift wrap chances like that to ANYONE
I mean what do you even say. Should have been a 2-0 shutout. You can maybe excuse the second goal. The first and third are absolutely inexcusable. Hell of a time to have your worst game of the year
My prediction is Airey starts tomorrow.
With the loss, I agree. I don't think we'll see Soulie for the rest of the season.
Poop on this game.
Good Lord.
i don’t think he’s wrong. Airey was good tonight. I imagine he starts tomorrow. If we lose, maybe it’s a toss up. If we win, I think he’s going to ride him. That’s not to pile on Souly at all. I’ll trust Bob if he goes back to Souly tomorrow, but he clearly had the yips tonight and it can stick with you
Scoring chances Gophers 24, Notre Dame 9
Scoring chances are defined as grade A chances.
I realize scoring chance in the end doesn't matter it is about winning the game but hockey is a game where goaltending is the great equalizer. If the goaltending from tonight is similar the rest of the series Notre Dame is definitely a tough out.
I just like the chances of number one team in goals scored if they keep getting good chances which we definitely did.
Plus if Souliere doesn't gift wrap two goals (which up until tonight he had never done) we could have won this game 2-1 even with how well the Notre Dame goalie played.
I will refrain from comment so I don't get called a "Karen". 🤣
Do they even let Bob in the arena tomorrow to coach game 2??
No idea who gets the start tomorrow.
We did the one thing you can’t do against ND. Give them easy one early. I am going to be a salty guy and say they are as bad as I expected. They did nothing (besides goaltending and blocking shots) to deserve to win that game

I like Soulie, but after tonight, and it's now do-or-die time, and obviously in the NCAAs...
If we won tonight, I'd have expected Soulie with the start tomorrow. Now? Ehhhh.....

Sure wish we were on the bye this weekend, Notre Dame looked like the one team in this game that didn’t wanna be watching highschool hockey tonight. We looked just out of sync to the point it was painful to watch, and honestly the last game we played against them I wasn’t expecting much different. I probably should’ve gave it the 24 hour rule but I don’t know who this team is from one week to the next.
The refs needed to make sure Jackson got his 600. We can move on now. 😁

I have no idea what game you were watching.

If Airey starts tomorrow it could certainly end up being a case of him playing the rest of the season. If he is given the chance how this weekend plays out would certainly seem to determine who plays our next game after this weekend and at that point it's all single elimination so obviously if you have a hot goalie you stick with him.
I say this referring more to how Airey plays (if given the chance) not if we win or lose the series.
BTW, I think the Gophers win the series this weekend but it isn't going to be easy the next two nights. Winning in the Big Ten rarely is.
Also, my prediction that Airey starts tomorrow has more to do with what I saw from him (tracking the puck) and the potential of what a hot Airey could give us rather than losing confidence in Souliere. He has had a great season and one bad game (yes the playoff is a bad time to have it but the series isn't over) doesn't change that.
This is the worst timing to have a goalie confidence issue. Liam’s head was definitely not in the game. Airey was pretty solid in relief. But have also seen Airey be leaky at times this season. Glad I don’t have to choose who starts in net. I don’t think I will be disappointed on whichever gets the start tomorrow night. I am interested to see how Liam would respond after his performance tonight if he gets the nod. Tomorrow night the gophers need to get the first goal and force Notre Dame to generate scoring chances. That should open up the game for our speedy and talented players.
I can see many ways Souliere plays again this season including starting tomorrow.
I realize when a goalie plays as bad as he did tonight it is normal to question were he is at mentally/confidence wise but Souliere is a 5th year grad senior who has a ton of experience so he certainly has the ability to come back and play well if given the chance.
Edited to speak to the issue at hand:
- Herb Brooks: You know people I speak to say that Soulie's game has been off from time to time.
- Craig Patrick: They ever see him when his game's on?
😉

I guess positive is last time souly had this bad a game (MSU game) he stopped 94 of his next 100 shots
Not sure how much it matters. We are picking between the World's most okayest goalie and the World's most average goalie. Can't imagine that won't bite us at some point during the last four games of the year.
They played Airey both nights against them last fall when they needed a bigger body in net, maybe we see that again because that might work better against this team? But if you fall off the horse you gotta get right back on, so sitting Souliere is only going to make him stew longer before he gets that next chance; I’m sure he’s chomping at the bit to go again.
I think we see one of them tomorrow and the other on Sunday. I’m just not certain on which way it will go.

Well played!!!! 👍
It also could end up being

Coach has said multiple things about Airey last season and this season that makes me think he see something in Airey that will come out at some point (who knows if it will be this season).
Tonight gave coach a chance (if he wants to take) to see if what he sees in Airey is ready to come out.

feel like if you play souly tomorrow and win, you play him Sunday as you need him to get into the do or die mindset and we need no more yips. If you play Airey tomorrow and win, feel like it’s tough to then bench him unless you win like 5-4 and he’s bad (I don’t see how nd scores that many).
I’m sure Bob has a pretty good eye on their emotional makeup as that was a real quick hook tonight when he saw souly didn’t have his head in it. I’ll be very curious to see as it could be what defines the season

To be honest you’re right, the first goal was embarrassing and not on the team. The other thing is ND’s style of play is frustrating to watch and again not on us. Tomorrow is another day and I expect we’ll bounce back with attitude.

Airey has been nothing to get excited about this season but I think this will change before his Gopher career ends.
When it happens who knows?
For what it's worth this season Airey is 3-0 vs ND with another scoreless 38ish minutes tonight
Souliere is 0-2.
But 3 goals isn't gonna cut it. Get to 4, you win easily.

they’ve yet to lose this year when scoring 4 (19-0) so seems like a good bet 😉

2 of the 3 goals were purely on Solie.

IMO the silver lining from tonight was the Gophers never sagged even after giving up two atrocious goals. Often times when your goalie is playing like "four letter word" it affects the team especially when the opponent's goalie is playing really well.
They never got frustrated and kept playing their game. Unfortunately, the scoreboard didn't reflect this at the end of the game.
Call me crazy "people do it all the time 😉 " but I think the best way for the Gophers to win the next two games would be 3-2 in OT. This wouldn't be good for our heart rates as fans though. 😀
Winning in OT in the playoffs helps a team stick to their game and play with less nerves in tight games later in the playoffs. In the playoffs there are no good or bad wins all wins are GREAT wins.

I missed the 3rd goal flipping back and forth, next thing I see is a different goalie and 3-1.

He tried to be Marty Brodeur and it backfired. Horribly.

Souliere made a "beautiful" goal setting up pass which is very rarely a good thing for a goalie. Ugh
Technically the goal was unassisted but it was definitely "assisted". 😝

They've rode him for several weeks now successfully - I just don't think they will forget that after 1 game.
Do they even let Bob in the arena tomorrow to coach game 2??
Do you ever have a thought that doesn't sound like idiotic ramblings of a 4 year old?
Was clearly a tongue-in-cheek comment to the hysteria that surrounds this program. I see it went right over your head. I have a feeling most things do in your life.
I’ve seen you go after other people on here. You seem like a miserable low IQ dick. I feel sorry for you. Maybe pick up a self help book or something, or listen to a podcast that forces you to think.
Hell, talk to a girl…or a guy. Put the phone down and go touch some grass man. Good luck, I’m rooting for you!
Yeah it’s pretty simple, the better goalie with a top 10 sv% in the NCAA (last I checked anyway) starts again and gets a chance to redeem himself, which he likely will. Overreacting to one game makes no sense especially when Airey is the other goalie and he’s been mediocre at best this year.I can see many ways Souliere plays again this season including starting tomorrow.
I realize when a goalie plays as bad as he did tonight it is normal to question were he is at mentally/confidence wise but Souliere is a 5th year grad senior who has a ton of experience so he certainly has the ability to come back and play well if given the chance.

That decision was made a few weeks ago, you start Souly.
Normally I would agree. But the 1st and 3rd goals were alarming.
That being said, the second goal has been my biggest concern heading into the NCAA tourney. Soulie is consistently getting beat top corner, glove side. Many times with a wide open view to the shooter. Teams have this scouted and are clearly attacking it.
This series is straightforward in my opinion. I would start Airey Saturday. If we win and he is mediocre you go back to Soulie Sunday. If Airey plays lights out and we win you stick with Airey Sunday.
The tough decision will be who you start the quarterfinal round.
Part of the intent of switching goaltenders is to light a fire under a team, or yeah it’s just not his day. The other intent (IMO) is to light a fire under the goaltender. Souliere can/should get that chance tonight to show what he’s made of. Bob did the right move there and think he will tonight too.
