Eff cancer!! My 44 year old brother found out yesterday that he has rectal cancer. He didn't have any symptoms so I'm not sure why his doctor ordered a colonoscopy in the first place but it's a good thing he did. I had 2 small benign polyps removed during my age 50 colonoscopy last fall. If I developed cancer at age 44 and didn't know it, I probably wouldn't be here today.

Please get screened early. As my doctor told me, colo/rectal cancer is not only treatable, but it's one of the only cancers that can be prevented with early screening.

I believe the new formal recommendation is 45.  Our crappy western diet is taking its toll.  ?

I have a coworker who’s husband died early 50s due to colon cancer, he ignored symptoms for a couple years (cause that’s what guys do) before getting a diagnosis and then spent the last few years of his life taking meds, having surgery, and getting chemo.

agreed.  Get checked.

Really sickened by what's happening in this country, and accountability starts with the elected leaders. That is not pointing at one side or the other. It's pointing at all of them.

I think social media and the internet has been a huge downward turning point for our society as mental health help did not keep up with the rapid change in communication. Combined that with the ridiculous prevalence of guns and here we are.

I have a little log book for each vehicle where we track mileage amount of gas/cost etc. at each fill.
I’ve had my Avenger for 11 years and I think last night was a record fill at $60 for the shitty gas - after the 10 cents a gallon cub discount.

I also own a year old diesel vehicle…needless to say it spends most of its time in the garage these days.

If I didn’t work until well after dark I’d consider riding my bike to work.

The U of M just -*** my kids for financial aid.  Seton Hall offered my youngest $25k just in scholarship before they even discussed aid while the U is giving him $15k total off of $50k.  A valedictorian that hasn't had a B since he was in 9th grade, was in NHS the past two years, was class vice-president, etc., etc., etc.

Unfortunately that is very common.  My husband is the regional alumni coordinator for his college.  He is keyed into the HS students who apply from MN. You often get a much better package from a private college or university because almost all of them have massive endowments to draw from.  They are also looking for a balance of students from different regions, economic status and outside interests.  The joke at his college is if you are a trombone playing male from the Midwest you can get a full ride.  And on the sad but true aspect, 50% of the applicants he sees are valedictorians.  ALL of them are A students with 4.0 gpa.  The level of todays student is through the stratosphere! The U doesn’t have to complete for your kid, they have too many applications going in, Seaton wants them.

Note: Due to inflation dirty deeds will no longer be done dirt cheap.

I echo Kelly's comments.  I had two very good students in my house who received excellent financial packages from the private colleges they applied to and the schools they eventually attended.  While the packages didn't bring the cost down to the level of The U or a MNSCU University it was certainly enough of a break off of sticker price to make it attainable.   The one addition I would add to Kelly's comments is the high schools my kids attended have a long relationship and track record of sending very good students to private schools my kids applied to so I think this helped enhance the packages they received.

Good luck to your son Slap and be sure to remind him Seton Hall does NOT have a hockey program.

I wish the U had offered me $15K off.  I was a straight A student through high school and got squat from them.  (Even after teaching myself how to play trombone. ?)

You all should know my favorite UMN saying by now:

I love this fuc*ing university, and this university loves fuc*ing me!  ?

I think they just try to bring the cost down to what people can/will pay.  Seton Hall costs $65K per year.  The U costs $40K.  They look to be about a wash after school scholarships.

50k being out of state annual tuition plus room & board (I gather)? Considering in your sons particular situation that out of state tuition (at least for freshman year) is the only option at all US Colleges, and that the U is a public university, 15k off of 50k (if we’re talking solely scholarship ?) is actually pretty good. And aside from guaranteed student loans, based on your job status, I can’t imagine he’d qualify for any other financial aide (meant respectfully of course).

For perspective (regarding in state) many top of their HS class students get a $4-5k per year Presidential Scholarship to the U. (based on tuition + room & board totaling about 25k annually). Plus any other scholarships they may earn from sources outside the U

My knowledge is based upon my oldest son graduating from the Carlson School of Management in 2015 and my youngest son graduating from the College of Science & Engineering in 2020.

20 years ago men outnumbered women applying to college, that’s no longer the case.   Schools have to really work at at least trying to keep a 50-50 ratio.

Add in a unique skill and oh boy the schools perk up.  Schools out East want students from the Midwest and the West, they want a mix. Schools here want a geographic mix too.  It’s an algorithm and that frustrates parents.  I don’t blame them.

I graduated from college in 1994 with $7600 in student loan debt. My only scholarship was $500 my first year from Moorhead State. They declined to renew it because my grades were, ahem, sub-optimal.

I do something similar. I have a steno notebook and enter the date, gallons, number of miles and avg. Did this for the last 20 years between the Dodge Stratus and Dodge Journey. And then I enter it on a Excel spreadsheet. Most might think it's a bit too much but it goes with my OCD'ness.

Makes me cry when I see how much money I spend in gas and how little miles per gallon my car gets, especially on winter gas?!

my dad always did it and I started too when I started driving, and it’s just always been a habit.  Granted this was started when cars didn’t track mpg or any of that stuff for you.

Also gives me something to do while I’m waiting for the car to fill up? ??‍♀️

Waay back in the day....1980's, people used to do that to figure out if it was time for a tune up.  If the MPG dropped, it was time for new plugs, wires, filters, or more importantly, a carb adjustment.  But now it seems it all evens out if you follow the maintenance schedule even somewhat closely.  Cleaner fuel and fuel injectors keeps everything running pretty smoothly.  The synthetic oils seem to be kinder on the engines too.

Actually is SUCKS… Dealing with OCD and more importantly anxiety and depression. I have been seen for my anxiety and depression for years. I have pretty much conquered my depression and my anxiety is somewhat under control. I am medicated for my anxiety even though I’m not a fan of medicine.  And most importantly I found out many years ago it’s good to talk about it and be open about it. It’s not a weakness to admit you are struggling. I still find myself to with drawl myself in a good way when my anxiety is rearing it’s ugly head.
There’s more I can share, but I’ll thread lightly. Though I’m open if anyone wants to shoot me a pm.

My neighbor has a big lone tree in his pasture. There has been an eagle nest in it with 2 adult bald eagles hanging around for about 5 years now. (Very unusual here in farming country) Yesterday's storm blew the tree down. No sign of the eagles. Sad.

Can I just say I still hate the new page layout for the iPhone web browser pages I have open.  I inevitably hit the corner with the x when I’m swiping and close the page I want, or somehow delete them all when trying to get back the page I closed.
the old stacked tab view was so much more practical.  ?

Was just curious. There’s an eagles nest with 2 adult eagles near my in-laws house between Hampton and Randolph. It’s fun driving past the tree and seeing one or both eagles and the eaglets as well.

So at Lifetime Fitness they have a technogym Abdominal Crunch machine & while there are other ab machines, this particular machine is typically the one used most often. What sticks in my craw…are users who remain sitting in the machine chair (for several minutes) between sets. And what ESPECIALLY drives me bonkers is users talking on their cell phones while sitting on the machine chair for more than several minutes…between sets. ☝️A typical set is 50-100 crunches at a time taking 2 or 3 minutes max. How difficult is it to get out of the machine chair between sets so others can get a quick set in? (between yours) It’s just basic common courtesy!

I'm having issues with my laptop here at work with videos playing on Faceplace, Instagram, and You Tube where the video scrolls to the left of the video window so I only see half of the video. It happens on my Firefox browser and occasionally on my Chrome browser.  What the hell is going on?  If I type in that question to the Google machine I don't find an answer that even comes close to addressing the issue I'm having.

Am I the only one that this happens too?  Or am I am idiot that isn't seeing the simple solution?

Is it just the video portion that pops off the screen, or do the controls move off to the side as well?

I’m surprised they allow cellphones?  My gym makes you lock them up to protect other peoples privacy.  No sneaky photos.  Do other gyms let people have cell phones?

Note: Due to inflation dirty deeds will no longer be done dirt cheap.

I’m having issues with my laptop here at work with videos playing on Faceplace, Instagram, and You Tube where the video scrolls to the left of the video window so I only see half of the video. It happens on my Firefox browser and occasionally on my Chrome browser.  What the hell is going on?  If I type in that question to the Google machine I don’t find an answer that even comes close to addressing the issue I’m having.

Am I the only one that this happens too?  Or am I am idiot that isn’t seeing the simple solution?

Is it just the video portion that pops off the screen, or do the controls move off to the side as well?

Just the video portion.

I'll take this to PM to try to help and not flood the thread.

We went to Great Wolf Lodge for a night for his birthday because he really wanted to go to a water park.  The trip was fun but I’m amazed at just how many fully grown adults can’t seem to be better behaved than their children.

Of all the people cutting us off in the halls or barging in front of us in the water park I’d say more than half were adults.

Planet Fitness does. I'd be a little POed if they didn't as I use Pandora/Samsung Music through bluetooth to listen to music while I'm working out.
