Running With Speed:
It tells the fascinating story of how the most dedicated and ingenious video game players in the world compete to set the fastest records of all time, and how they unite at @gamesdonequick to raise millions of dollars to fight cancer.
A bit of a "pat ourselves on the back" and/or promo movie, but the levels that these people go to...holy crap. Bit of a spoiler, 2 people share one controller, blindfolded, to play NES Super Punch Out (the Tyson game), using audio clues as their cues. WTF.
I love video games, but not THIS much. Quite interesting to see how they train themselves to get to that level of gaming.

@the-rube Have you seen “A Fist Full of Quarters” about the Donkey Kong world record? Shows more of a dark side to video games.

Oh God yes. If there is a video game doc out there, I most likely have seen it, at least when it comes to the classic games.
Hint:
And the doc on Twin Galaxies is amazing.

Tyson (2017): Documentary, mostly interviews (including him), about Mike Tyson's life.
Blah.
Tyson (2008) is SOOOOO much better. IIRC, the director said, "I'll do this, only if you are willing to answer any and every question." Tyson agreed. And it is WHOA.

Are they Canadian? I heard several “aboot” in that trailer 🤣

The Curtis family is selected to test a new home device: a digital assistant called AIA. AIA learns the family's behaviors and begins to anticipate their needs. And she can make sure nothing - and no one - gets in her family's way.
Basically a gore-less horror movie. All psychological, and how AI is our new ruler. Well done, and frankly, in real life, we're more than halfway there. AIA is basically Alexa/Siri on steroids x 1000. Have fun, you smart-phone users! 😀

Smart phones are one thing.…having all those little cubes and spheres that listen to everything you say and run things in your home? Nooooooooo! I refuse to have those things in my house.
I am interested in seeing this movie sometime though, probably just to reinforce that I’m old and that living off the grid seems more appealing by the day. 😂
There is no difference between the phone and the eyes, other than the phone is prob with you at all times. 😀

Maybe, but I keep as many tracking features off as possible unless I need them (like location). I even frequently shut my phone completely off at night. Still not perfect I know, but I try to keep my digital footprint as small as possible.
You won’t be able to find me if I get kidnapped. 😂😂
Even dumbphones have tracking, which I obv shut off.

Subservience:
Follows a struggling father who purchases a domestic SIM to help care for his house and family, unaware she will gain awareness and turn deadly.
A lesser version of "Afraid" although the main role of the domestic SIM suits Megan Fox's level of acting. 😉 It was okay, and the ending was a guessing game. The wife's role is a 100% MacGuffin, that is her only purpose, I cannot think of any other real reason for her to be part of the story.

Faster:
An ex-con gets on a series of apparently unrelated killings. He gets tracked by a veteran cop with secrets of his own and an egocentric hit man.
Dwayne Johnson is the star, but also has Billy Bob Thornton in there as the cop. Some other familiar faces, but no huge star. Decent action, DJ is a man with a purpose, but is also conflicted at times. I think this is a movie that you need to let marinate after watching, it's a little deeper than what it is on the surface.

Carry-On (Netflix streaming)
A mysterious traveler blackmails a young TSA agent into letting a dangerous package slip through security and onto a Christmas Day flight.
Just watched this after watching the game. Taron Egerton plays the TSA agent and Jason Bateman plays the mysterious traveler.
I really liked this movie. Both stars are great in their roles and the story has lots of twists and turns. You do have to suspend disbelief quite a bit but I enjoyed the ride.

Barbie:
Barbie and Ken are having the time of their lives in the colorful and seemingly perfect world of Barbie Land. However, when they get a chance to go to the real world, they soon discover the joys and perils of living among humans.
Netflix finally got the streaming rights, I had high expectations, and they were exceeded.
This is a tremendous multi-layered movie, with quite a bit of snark and humor, and more than a touch of satire/social commentary. I did expect more song-and-dance scenes, but I think they included the right amount. I fully enjoyed this one, and the final line of the movie...classic. The line fit Barbie's journey perfectly.

Very much worth the watch. I am a fan of Theo Rossi, too, and he's been in more than a few things (you would probably recognize him from Sons Of Anarchy, or on the other end of the spectrum, Luke Cage). As for action or communication between agencies/depts, little suspense for believability. For "security reasons," yeah, there is quite a bit.
Still loved it, all the workarounds that the criminals used, etc.

Finally got around to watching Deadpool & Wolverine and yes, it is a big hodgepodge mess of fan service. Couldn’t help but smile through a lot of it, though.
By far my favorite part is Rob Simonsen’s choral scoring of Like a Prayer. Good gravy that’s good and I could listen to it forever. Especially the section that starts at 1:30.
That franchise has always nailed it with the soundtracks.

The Dead Don't Die:
The focus is on the sleepy small town of Centerville where the dead become undead.
A send-up of sorts of zombie/horror movies. BIG time cast led by Bill Murray and Adam Driver.
As it goes on, you can see what they are doing here, and at the end you see the bigger theme. Really dry and dark humor, and it's awesome. It's not anything in particular, but the sum is greater than its parts. Loved it, and loving it more the more I reflect on it. Definitely recommend.

Extremely underrated movie. Driver is great. My daughter was just saying yesterday we should rewatch it.
Godzilla x Kong: New Empire
Godzilla and Kong team up to kick some ass.
Pretty solid movie, Don't have to do much thinking, so perfect for a post holiday meal movie.
Compliance:
A normal Friday service at a fast food restaurant becomes interrupted by a police officer who claims an employee stole from a customer, but something more sinister is going on.
Based on a true story, but the "victims" are complete morons within the movie AND the true story. First word out of your mouth: Lawyer.
That being said, yes, the movie did the story justice, but JFC, people are dumb.

The Sisters Brothers:
Eli and Charlie Sisters, an infamous duo of bickering gunslinging assassins, chase a gold prospector and his unexpected ally in 1850s Oregon.
Solid western, although not bombastic in any way. Very low-key. The relationships between the 4 main characters is constantly changing, so you never really know how it's going to go. Some quirky comedic lines/convos break up the seriousness of the mood. It's a nice movie just to curl up on the couch, and enjoy the show.

It Ends With Us:
When a woman's first love suddenly reenters her life, her relationship with a charming, but abusive neurosurgeon is upended and she realizes she must learn to rely on her own strength to make an impossible choice for her future.
This started off well, then just spiraled into every Lifetime/Hallmark movie ever made. The only cliche that they didn't hit was the "midwestern girl" origin of the main character. Other than that, it was a coverall bingo.
If you like that sort of thing, go for it. I wouldn't recommend it.

Killers Of The Flower Moon (Apple TV):
When oil is discovered in 1920s Oklahoma under Osage Nation land, the Osage people are murdered one by one - until the FBI steps in to unravel the mystery.
This is one heck of a movie. The depth of all the main characters involved...how their motives as presented are constantly changing, shifting a little here and there, depending on what they may or may not want. From what I've read, the movie is pretty much true, and that also makes this movie infuriating (as a friend of mine put it aptly).
It's a long watch, about 3.5 hours, but very much worth it.

personally thought the runtime was a bit too long and film lacked some pace, but likely Scorsese felt he wanted to really keep providing the time for the watcher to feel/see the characters feelings changing subtly. Agree the story is incredible (though so very believable based on history). Would’ve liked a bit more of a step out and away from just DiCaprio and DeNiro in the extra character development but all in all was a good watch for me (my significant other was less a fan but also not a fan of movies you have to pay close attention to, which this certainly was).
didn’t realize/remember this thread existed @the-rube. I’ll have to check out some of your other reviews and like that they seem to be new and old!
I highly recommend reading the book, personally I think it’s superior to the film. The book focuses more on the murders and the government response to it. The Washington agent is the main character in the book, along side the native woman’s family. The movie felt the need to focus more on the husband, DiCaprio, and them as a couple, and DeNiros character. As usual, there is just so much more detail and in-depth information in the book. And the book is just as infuriating! The whole story is so shocking.Killers Of The Flower Moon (Apple TV):

That one has been on my list as a movie to purchase. But so far no 4K disc, not even a DVD has been released... If that's the case, I will likely never see it. I'd rather pay $30 and own the movie, than have to pay so much a month to stream a lower quality version of it.

I had heard that was a deliberate move not for Hollywood's sake, but for the viewer's sake, to make it more personal, something like that.

Justice (Polish movie, so subtitles):
A discharged police officer is given a chance to regain his former life by capturing a bank robbery crew. Teaming up with a young policewoman, the ex-cop must act swiftly before the heist draws unwanted scrutiny from the new authorities.
Underwhelming as to the story. Pretty standard cop-drama. There's really not much to say here, other than picking up on the police-work/procedure to catch the criminals; that has always held my interest: what do THEY see, compared to the average person? Very much a take it or leave it.

The Six Triple Eight:
During World War II, 855 Black women joined the fight only to end up to fix the three-year backlog of undelivered mail. Faced with discrimination and a country devastated by war, they managed to sort more than 17 million pieces of mail ahead of time.
Solid movie, about the only names I recognized were Kerry Washington (Django Unchained) and Dean Norris (most notably Breaking Bad). I love the fact at the end, the real Major Adams (not necessarily the MAIN character, but up there) speaks about some of the experience, and real footage at the end.
The battles scenes were rather weak, looked really fake, to be honest. I guess the budget money wasn't there. The real story, obviously was the trials, triumphs, and tears that this battalion went through, with no thanks being given, and the treatment they received.
Overall, a good war movie, and there are some onion moments.

Rob Peace:
Based on a true story, a brilliant young man puts his bright future at risk to help his father.
There are some holes in the story, some questions left unanswered. But, good movie, some great self-reflection, some quality questions on the "system," etc. Intelligent, not socially indicting. I really liked it, although it became a bit scattered at the end.
If they could have tightened it up a little, it may have become a brilliant movie.

Started Horizon Chapter 1 (Netflix) last night. Gorgeous Utah vistas if you’re into that on the backdrop of a typical western focused on the movement west, interaction with Native Americans, etc.
Seems so far like a pretty typical of how those stories go though still getting all the characters focus but will post a more full post once I’m done but it’s a long one (run time just a bit over 3 hours).
Father Figures:
Upon learning that their mother has been lying to them for years about their allegedly deceased father, fraternal twin brothers hit the road to search for him.
Owen Wilson and Ed Helms star in this. It's a bit quirky, kooky, slightly delves into the zany (but not too far). Add a dose of honest sentiment, and there you go. Some great supporting actors add to the mix: JK Simmons, Glenn Close, Ving Rhames, Harry Shearer, and Terry Bradshaw (yes, that Terry Bradshaw).
It was pretty much how I expected, but with all the above actors named, I'd say they were the great frosting on an average cake (esp JK Simmons; I swear anything he does is gold, except his insurance commercials 😉 )

Serena:
In Depression-era North Carolina, the future of George Pemberton's timber empire becomes complicated when he marries Serena.
How did I miss this one when it came out in 2014? Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence? AND the kicker from "The Replacements" w/Keanu Reeves? You kidding me?
Complex characters, good story. A real downward spiral, for sure. Bradley plays a very torn character, whereas JLaw is very determined. To say there is a bit of unintentional friction is an understatement. I dug it.

Re-watched The Menu tonight.
Damn, that is a good movie. Just about every customer gives me a reason to punch them in the face, so I understand the Chef's sentiment. That being said, and no spoilers, but wow, what an ending.

I'll be honest, couldn't stand any of that. Not my style.
Elephant Man was good for me, but that's about it.

Im so glad he got to make the Twin Peaks season for Showtime a handful of years ago. Didn’t fully understand all of it, but damn if it wasn’t good.
Back In Action:
Former CIA spies Emily and Matt are pulled back into espionage after their secret identities are exposed.
Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz star in this 100% over-the-top action comedy popcorn movie. Great chemistry given their acting styles over the years, I really enjoyed it. Reminded me a little of "True Lies." Their kids calling them out, and vice versa, all of it. Make sure you have extra butter for that bucket of popcorn you'll be eating.
