I had a guy do blown in fiberglass in my garage ceiling 3 summers ago for about $750. 3 car garage. If you want contact info let me know I may be able track it down.
Thanks... I've already insulated 2/3 of the garage last winter... it's the last 1/3 I'm trying to finish up.

Took advantage of Pub 819's gift card thing last weekend. $100 gift card got you a bonus $35. Normally (now through the end of Dec) $100 gets you $25, $50 gets you $10.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
Jason derusha maintains a list of these for MN at Minnesota monthly
Eh, I learn about them b/c I go to those places on the regular. 😉

Ok

Not sure if this is the correct thread, but curious if anyone has any recommendations on home security systems (we are in the south metro).
We have had ADT since we moved here almost 12 years ago and frankly have had nothing but difficulty. Unbeknownst to us we weren’t even getting coverage for two years as our equipment wasn’t working and the company never let us know. It was discovered when a friend came over while we were gone and accidentally set off the alarm and we were never notified.
after that, the system was changed to run off cell vs land line. In the last six months the system keeps going offline and we get less and less time between having to reset it.
ADTs customer service is atrocious. They don’t know answers to any of my questions, I get different answers each time I call, and sometimes they just go straight to an upsell and won’t take no for an answer to the point I have to just hang up.
I’m really not interested in dealing with them anymore if I’m going to be expected to pay out of pocket for repair or a new system.
curious if anyone has any recommendations on anyone local? We are ready to shop around, and are ideally not looking for the ring/video type systems where anyone who can hack has access to your private lives. ?
Has anyone switched to a decentralized VPN device and if so would you recommend? The up front cost isn't terrible, and if the claimed benefits are accurate not paying a monthly fee thereafter is appealing.
I've only dug into this a little bit so I may be off base here.
I didn't like that my device would also handle traffic for others as well as mine (this may be configurable?). Best case seemed like this could cause data usage issues with your ISP. Worst case was that there was a potential for illegal traffic to show like it was originating from your device. Try explaining that to Interpol.

Good to know. I think these are legit questions to ask until this is fleshed out more.
Anyone have a furnace repair service they like in the twin cities on the east side?
I'm 99% sure the solenoid died (which is crazy because solenoids are usually rated for like a half-million cycles). Anyways, I'd rather hire a service with scruples because I don't want my furnace red-tagged by some shady POS.
Centerpoint Home Service Plus has always been good to me. At my old house they replace the blower motor and mother board and cleaned the flame sensors multiple times. All for free because I had the monthly plan.Anyone have a furnace repair service they like in the twin cities on the east side?

I don't know if they will come out for a fee if you don't have a monthly plan. But they're usually quick and very trustworthy.
We used them to replace a water heater once when we didn't even have the plan at the time, and their quoted price and guarantee relative to other places was very competitive. That was about 15 years ago though fwiw.

I recently bought a 16° 18v Milwaukee Nailer… it’s a very good nailer. No compressor or hose to haul around!!! Works for my needs. If I was going build another shed I would use the air nailer.
The big positive, I got it for $250 and they run $329… and it wasn’t even a Black Friday deal!!!

I swear we had a new thing where companies had to post the final price on tickets and things like that.
I just tried to buy concert tickets for a concert in April at the Fillmore. I saw a price of $69 and thought, yeah, I can do that. I get to the end and it is over $120. a "Fulfillment and Service Fee" of $38 (over 50% of the ticket price) and Taxes of $14. For a Total of $121. Nope!
I don't understand how we reached the point that it costs $120+ to see a mid-tier metal band (Arch Enemy) play at the Fillmore. Apparently people must be willing to pay that, I am not.
But also... I thought they had to show the full price prior to getting to checkout... or did I dream that up? Is that not a thing?
FTC just passed a rule on that, don't think it takes effect yet, though. The new Minnesota law passed in the last session takes effect January 1I swear we had a new thing where companies had to post the final price on tickets and things like that.

Not sure which site you were on, but you can see prices with fees included by toggling that feature on with Seat Geek, TicketMaster and Stubhub in the Filter function. I don't think Ticketmaster includes the taxes though.
@eho Thanks. My outrage might have been slightly premature. The website I saw that announced the tour, I clicked on their link and it took my to Stubhub which all appeared to look legit. And they ARE selling tickets for $121. However, tickets haven't actually gone on sale yet according to the other websites... Presale starts tomorrow morning at 10:00am, and the band posted the presale "password" on the tweeter machine.
So apparently, they are offering to buy a ticket for you for a 50% upcharge it seems? I will see what the actual fees are when tickets go on sale tomorrow. I have never seen fake tickets to a concert on sale PRIOR to actual tickets being sold. Thats a new one. But when it is general admission, I guess you can try to do stuff like that.
Has anyone ever changed out the intake manifold on their vehicle? I’ve done things like things like brakes, spark plugs and thermostats.

I can change a tire and blinker fluid, and a windshield wiper. Other than that I can’t help you. 😂
If it's worth doing, I pay someone to do it for me. I don't know sh* about DIY auto maintenance.

Cars are so much more complicated with all the electronics and they cram so much under the hoods it’s challenging to DIY anymore.

Agreed. My brother has been a mechanic for 30 years. About a couple weeks ago, a 2000 Santa Fe rolled in, boss told my brother:
You're on this one. You're the only one that's worked on this model before. The others have no idea what this even is.

Really depends on the car... On my 2011 VW GTI, to do the water pump, I had to take the intake manifold off, and a lot of stuff was clipped to the intake manifold that had to come off. Unfortunately 3 of the fuel injectors pulled out with it, when I pulled the intake off. Including one that ended up breaking. Became a much bigger deal that I originally thought, but was doable, and even after I bought all the parts, saved over $1,400 in maintenance.
On my wife's V6 ford, we have to take the engine off one of the mounts so I can tip it just to access the back spark plugs. That is almost a bigger PITA than the intake manifold was.
If you're comfortable with car maintenance and have all the tools (or even most) then go for it. If you're nervous and have never done anything significant, or are in a rush, then I wouldn't do it.
(Disclaimer: I was a mechanic while in College)
I drive a hail-damaged 2004 CRV that has half of its electronics working. The gas mileage is starting to suffer a bit because of a bad O2 sensor and 215K miles. We bought it three years ago for $2995.00.
The electronics annoy me at times (mostly the power windows, as the problems are intermittent) but overall I’ve actually gotten a little attached to it. The motor just keeps going. The transmission doesn’t miss a beat. A tiny oil drip just behind the engine, but not enough that you need to top up between fluid changes. Plus, it drips onto the exhaust which after the car has been running for a minute burns it off before it can hit the ground. 😆
In the past, I did almost all my own vehicle maintenance. Oil change? Hit the parking brake, crawl under to drain, and swap the filter, put everything back in, done. Swap the spark plugs or distributor? Hop onto the fender and sit there while working on it.
These days, I'll swap air/cabin-air filters, battery, wiper blades... that's about it. Even changing a light bulb requires taking out the liner in the wheel well to get in from that side, it's just ridiculous. Other than that, oil changes on the bike is about it.
On the plus side, I'm at the stage in my career/life that I can afford to pay others to do most of the work on the thing.

@gator What kind of car? If it's a 1972 Datsun 240Z I can help just did it on mine.
I’ve had a headlight go out 3 times since October. I have spent hours trying to get the bulbs out and I just don’t have the hand strength at the weird angle I have to contort into. The first 2 changes I purchased after market bulbs to get a brighter bulb as the OE bulbs seem dim. But I think something about the LED bulbs don’t jive with the electronics of my car. So the last time I went OE and they’re still working. In the past, I did almost all my own vehicle maintenance. Oil change? long story short, I’ve spent a couple hundred dollars in the last 6 months because even changing a headlight bulb is too difficult.
My Ford Taurus and Ford Ranger I could change the bulbs in minutes. Then I had a Dodge Stratus and it would take 30 to 45 minutes per bulbs. You basically had to take the front end off to get to the housing. The Dodge Journey is a bit easier. Though I think a mouse chewed some of the wiring. And it was a real treat trying to rewire to the housing unit.

My eldest kid is a car whiz and/or has enough car junkie friends that if anything goes wrong with his 1998 Honda Accord with 175,000 he/they fix themselves. It's an amazing talent that leaves me envious and proud. I can change a tire, I've changed oil, replaced an alternator cable, break lights, actually replaced a broken driver's side window and other minor stuff. But what that kid can do is light years ahead.
