I was wondering when he was gonna go. Outstanding player. Now BC has that whole line of Perreault, Smith, Leonard plus another forward and a D off the U18 team.
They’re going to recruit themselves back to relevancy.

One of the available USHL goalies picks BC. BC and BU are really racking up the recruits.

Grant picks up a high end kid outta Chaska
I know points aren't the sole indicator but 1 in 11 games is pretty underwhelming for a F.

He’s a junior in the USHL. That’s pretty typical.

He's a 16-year-old playing against 18 and 19 year olds.

Michigan stays on a roll what else is new
Unless it is a player the Gophers were all in on, it doesn't bother me who Michigan gets. If all of the great players are going to the B1G,( after the Gophers get who they want) it will make the overall conference stronger, and that is a good thing. Now we just need for the "fans" to realize that, and start coming to the games. Also, having a roster of all #1 picks doesn't guarantee success. A former poster on this board was all in on Boston U a few years ago with all of their #1 picks. That's all he talked about. Engrave the trophy. They lost in the regionals 3 years in a row with all of that talent.

Interesting. Dogs gotta be kicking themselves. Hermantown guy.
kid a friend’s nephew. Kind of cool to see him commit. Sounds like duluth hadn’t offered or wasn’t a full ride scholarship.

Based on this year that’s an upgrade lol
Not sure if this is the right thread, but while I was looking up our current recruits I got curious to see how our transfers and former recruits are doing now. A lot of names on the former recruits list that just didn’t pan out, whether due to injuries or otherwise. Hard to say we missed out on much, although I think Joe Miller is going to be a nice player.

I thought he may have been on the short list of potential goalie recruits.

I only have one thing to say...

Hope for him that STT plays a similarly tight defensive game.
Carsen Musser remains uncommitted I believe. Anyone have any info on what he might be doing?

Pretty quiet on him. Rumor had it that he was going to play in the WHL since Portland drafted him a few years ago. His social media is also very vanilla. He follows both Portland and the Gophers on twitter FWIW. I check in on his account about once a week to see if he adds people he follows, but nothing new for a while. You would think a decision would be coming at some point.

I’m sure the coaching staff has thrown the kitchen sink at him. All we can do is wait for a decision.
It would seem to be a decent situation to step into. It's not like Barto is expected to own the crease for years to come.
Wonder if Bob has a transfer goalie lined up, he should be able to pick almost anyone he wants.
Goalie almost seems like QB in football where it's so hard to recruit and scout it may be wiser to bank on transfers.

Gotta imagine if they don’t get Musser Close gets a fifth year.
Purely message board speculation-- ( If Musser commits )
Musser is only 17, and turns 18 in May. He really hasn't been the full time #1 guy yet. Ideally, Close comes back for year 5, and Barto gets in more games next year. (not sure how realistic that is if a 5th year guy comes back and gets less games) Musser plays in USHL next year and comes in 2024. In any event, I'm sure Bob has a plan.

This is right on, you absolutely cannot go into a year with Barto and Musser or someone similar as your options and hope one of them earns the job. Not enough experience there. Unless it's a Spencer Knight/Jake Oettinger/Trey Augustine level recruit.

This is the absolute perfect scenario, unfortunately I think it’s a little unrealistic. USNTDP players, yes even goalies, rarely take that year in juniors after the U18 season. If we tell Musser we want him to play in the USHL next season, he probably won’t commit in the first place. He’ll probably want to go somewhere he can step into the net right away, whether that’s another NCAA team or Portland in the WHL.
Getting Close for a fifth year while also having Musser committed playing juniors is an absolute perfect world scenario. I just don’t know if we can have our cake and eat it too. Depends on how bad he wants to be a Gopher I guess.

If we went into next year with Barto/Musser I’d be pretty happy
If the Gophers win a NC I wouldn't be surprised to see Closer move on.

I suspect if he badly wanted to be a Gopher, he would have already committed.

I fear the same thing. But hey, if he wanted to go WHL, he woulda committed there by now lol. You never know… could just be weighing his options.
Maybe? But, to what? He's too small to get a real look at NHL time. Why not stick around another year and go for a second championship? If the Gophers win a NC I wouldn't be surprised to see Closer move on.
B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?

Because he'll be 25? I dunno. I know that's normal for Mankato these days, but I think it's time to move on.

I should have prefaced that by saying if Bob has plans on a successor. If they win the NC and the the Gophers lose quite a bit early departures I could see Bob looking at the team having a one-year "rebuild".

I don't want to start going the UND route. It can pay off but there is always a reason and most of the time some baggage with getting someone from the portal. Just use it to supplement with unexpected departures and not plan to use it as a main focus.
Airey commitment puts an end to the Musser conversation
