    From GPL’s resident meteorologist.

    Quote:

Family, plan to hunker down by 6pm tomorrow. Snow will start about mid day in Mkto and about 2-3pm in the cities. Heaviest snow will be 6pm-midnight. The latest snow total maps the NWS put out this morning are fairly good, actually. Especially after Tuesdays poor forecast. But this storm is a classic setup and models have been extremely consistent with timing. It was just a question of where the sharp cutoff line to the north will end up, which now appears to be N of the entire metro.

5-6 in the metro unless the bands setup a bit north. Which we won’t really know until tomorrow 6pm. I love the NWS :5-10…as if there’s no difference between 5 and 10 inches, lol

I think about 8 or so in woodbury, and 10-11ish for Mankato. All totals can shift to a bit higher of we get a good initial downfall of snow when it all starts and if the main band sets up farther N than my model is currently saying. But those are my thoughts as things look now

School District 196 already cancelling school for tomorrow with the potential snow fall. What a joke… though keep all the malls and kid friendly places open so parents can drag their kids out to in this “dangerous” snow storm.

Few inches here in Tonka land. Nothing to be ZOMG about. It IS still falling, though, so we’ll see. Roads were a bit more slick than expected, though, on the drive home from work.

Not local… but watching a stream on YouTube from a guy in Arkansas. He lost power for almost 10 minutes from the severe storms/tornadoes. 30 minutes later, a nursing home got hit by a tornado in one of the same systems that had been running over his house :(

If that tornado has been on the ground the whole time, that’s the one I was talking about.

That’s just insane, especially this time of year. :(

Mother of God. I measured 20″ of snow at my house in Woodbury. Not drifts. This was in the middle of my backyard. I think we can stop talking about the 1991 Halloween snowstorm now (at least the people who ended up in the bullseye of this one).

What still amazes me is how narrow the snow band was. I think MSP got 11” and Forest Lake barely got 1”. We had about 5 here on the east side of Plymouth

We got 16.8 in SSP. I thought it was going to be “heart attack” snow but was pleasantly surprised it wasn’t. Very easy to snowblow and a perfect weather day for it.

Roughly eight inches at our place in central St. Louis Park. Berm was over two feet of heart attack snow, the rest was pretty light and fluffy.

So this could have gone in travel but Weather seems a better fit. We went to Montreal for a few days, scheduled to come home Friday. So we fly from Montreal to Detroit. Our flight to MSP has been canceled. We hightail it to the club for help. Turns out we get split up on flights home. My husband is sent to Indianapolis/Mineapolis, leaving immediately. I’m on a direct to MSP. We head off to different gates. His flight lands in IN and the MSP flight has been canceled. He’s now stuck and quickly finds a hotel. Rescheduled flight at 6 am means he got about 4 hours of sleep. ME? My flight diverts to Duluth because the long runway at MSP is closed. We land and aren’t let off plane as they wait to see about situation. After 20 minutes they say the flight has been cancelled. So we’re cut loose at Duluth. There is not a single person working, no gate agent. Two people on our flight needed wheelchairs and there’s no one around or chairs to be found. The food places are closed. The bathroom is :censored: locked!! There are now about 100 people just abandoned at the airport. Hotels are fully booked as some holiday light display has just opened and tourists are in town. People are pissed off royally. Finally some Diamond flyer must have gotten ahold of Delta and given them an earful. Delta arranged for buses to take us to MSP. So a slow ride down to the cities gets all of us to the airport at around 11:30. NO TAXIS. Not a single driver. Uber is refusing to pick up or so backed up you couldn’t connect to a driver. I waited 45 minutes for a taxi and there were still at least 75 people in line behind me. I staggered home by 1:00am. Oh, and the f’ing cherry on top? I lost my iPad on the plane as it apparently slipped out of my bag in the overhead storage and I didn’t see it because of the angle of the compartment. Discovered that on the bus. When we both were finally home we just had to kind of laugh, boy when things go wrong they tend to REALLY go wrong. But we seriously had to question WHY either flight even left Detroit in the first place. I’m perfectly capable of traveling alone but I wish we’d been stuck together. Now I wait to see if my iPad is turned into Lost and Found, I’m not holding my breath.

Kelly Red, hoping your ipad is found & returned to you intact. Curious if Delta gave U & hubby the option of staying at a hotel in Detroit Friday night & flying out Saturday morning? I’m assuming they’d of allowed that, but you’d of had to pay for the hotel out of your own pocket? With a snowstorm storm in progress, trying to get home to MSP Friday was (unfortunately) a roll of the dice that didn’t turn out very well, but glad to hear that you eventually made it home.

No. Honestly at the time we were rush rush rushed to make a decision about getting to our rebooked flights. And I don’t think airlines pay for a hotel because of weather, only mechanical. If we’d have KNOWN our misadventure I think we would have stayed in Detroit. But we didn’t have a crystal ball, neither did Delta. But I’m very disappointed in how we were treated once in Duluth. I mean, JFC, a locked bathroom? That just chapped everyone.

Its reported that 74 people are now dead from the large tornado. The number has been climbing all day. It’s a very high number. But honestly, after looking at the damage, I am surprised its not in the high 100s. Buildings are now splinters.

I’ve been seeing low 50’s predicted pretty consistently but it’s supposed to be scattered rain during the day with a line of thunderstorms coming thru about 8PM then dropping to a low of 24 Thursday morning….may be ugly.

We start with a dense fog advisory, then move to high winds and thunderstorms that move through the area at 65 mph  with possible tornados and wind gusts up to 85 mph! Then temps plummet causing flash freeze.

Wow. Quite a day. I’ll be spending my afternoon battening down the hatches.

A lot of people in Iowa still have fresh memories of the Derecho in 2020. The forecast isn’t at that level but people do have that on their mind. I would imagine the interstate might be a little less busy last this afternoon.

If we do, I THINK that only leaves January and February. While the vast majority have been May-July, Minnesota has seen tornadoes every month March-November already.

Had to do a double take when that came up on my phone a while ago. I spent almost 5 hours clearing snow at my work on Saturday. Now today…in December…I have to concern myself with a possible tornado. It’s giving me flashbacks to dodging tornadoes in Southern Missouri in January 2008. I was ice fishing in 20 degree weather on a Sunday afternoon. The next day I was in Nevada, Missouri where it was near 70 degrees. There was no wonder why that tornado outbreak happened.

Really foggy in spots on the way home from Back Channel, as in “thankfully there’s a car ahead of me, so I can follow those tail lights.”

Round 1 came thru here about an hour ago. We are getting round 2 now. Thunder, lightning heavy rain. Only in Mn do we get more rain in December than we did in July. Supposed to turn to snow for a bit once the front goes thru when the wind really picks up. Lost power for about 5 minutes.

Crazy to think that this line reaches down to essentially Oklahoma City.

My daughter and I were watching it as we drove to her swimming lesson tonight in MG. By far the most impressive one of the year and it’s December

The wind is howling down here in AV. We have a temporary tarp shed up next to the house. I hope it’s still here tomorrow! The temp has been plummeting too. Heat finally kicked on.

Can’t wait to slide to work in the AM, thankfully I don’t have to be in til noon so I’ll look forward to hearing about the road conditions from those who have to venture out earlier! Good luck!

The cover on my canopy on my deck didn’t make it overnight, ripped to shreds where it was connected to the frame. Really glad all my trees made it. The wind was howling around midnight so much it woke me up.

I was pretty shocked we didn’t have a layer of ice on all the roads this morning. Pretty easy drive for me today.

My trash bin was at the end of the drive (Thursday trash day) way tipped, but all the trash was still in the bin. My recycling bin was blown from the garage, all the way to end of the driveway. And to top it off, the bbq was blown over tearing the brand new bbq cover. Walked around the house to see if I can see and structural damage. Nothing so far.

Could have been A LOT worse cause I laid in bed all hearing that wind. If this storm was in the summer it could’ve been a lot worse. The ground is somewhat frozen helping trees from being uprooted.

Out here in the sticks, the rain turned to sleet and then snow. All of the roads down here are sheets of ice and the wind is still blowing.

I don’t know if the storm broke up as it got to my neck of the Twin Cities or what, but thankfully we barely felt anything in the east metro. Never had any wind stronger than about 25mph last night.

Me neighbors have a trampoline with the net surround- to keep kids from bouncing off. They also have a love seat sized outdoor glider with a fabric canopy. Both appear in tact and in the normal position.

They must have the trampoline strapped into the ground fairly well because I assumed it would be reported as a UFO somewhere over East Bethel.

I think the wind dried things up before the snow. It was raining here and almost freezing at 1 am. Our garbage can tipped over which sounded like thunder in the middle of the night, but that was about it thankfully.

Coming down heavy in the Ridgedale area. This morning I heard 1 inch, but by about 3pm I was hearing 3-5 inches. I have no idea what to expect.

The way the wind is blowing and looking outside. I can see it being by morning 3” here and 5” there across the street… lol!!!
