The drive home from the airport at 12:45pm wasn’t as bad as I feared. Visibility was down to about 1/4 of a mile but there was traction on the roads. The biggest problem were all the idiots you couldn’t see in front of you because they didn’t wipe off their taillights or turn them on at all.

I think people in newer vehicles rely on the automatic light function and don’t even realize they aren’t on in conditions like this.

I was surprised by how many vehicles were driving without lights today too but the auto thing makes sense. I personally dislike the auto feature because they go on and off in the waning light of day and it’s super annoying when people think they are being flashed. And I personally just like lights on all the time for safety.

Many newer vehicles have an “AUTO” light setting so they automatically adapt to the surrounding brightness, Nice feature to have! I’m old enough to remember when you had to use your left foot to manually activate your “high beams” by tapping a metal floor switch on the floor!

Same here… ‘79 Ford. The Green Machine. A two tone green truck. Could be spotted a mile away and one of a kind in a town of 3,800. Could not get away with anything. And my best friend had a powder blue Ranchero. Again, the only one in town.

As for headlights. Personally I would like to see all newer vehicles be required to have them on automatically and you have to manually turn them off.

My driveway went from drifts of a foot plus to a couple of inches. Made snow-blowing it real fun. Finished, went inside for dinner and the Lakeville snowplow came through. He must’ve been going pretty good cause the snow wake was half way up the driveway.

Visibility and traffic near 494/Carlson Parkway was nil early afternoon. By about 3ish? It was pretty much back to normal. Side roads in Plymouth on my way home from work were trash, but once I crossed into Minnetonka city limits? Roads were fine.

The auto feature doesn’t always turn on the headlight in bad weather during the day. Even though the daytime running lamps are lit in the front, the taillights are not; making cars difficult to see from behind in bad weather.

I have the auto-lights, and yeah, it’s weird. They turned on and off 2-3 times on my 10 minute commute home from work. Combo of darkness and I dunno, visibility that simulated darkness?

On my way to hockey practice tonight some dumshit in a tiny 3 cylinder car tried pulling onto the highway in front of a semi. I was in the lane next to the semi. Thankfully I make it a habit to avoid driving right next to semis because he swerved into my lane to avoid killing the idiot. The tiny spec of a car probably only reached 20 mph with his one spinning tire as we zoomed passed him.

Not the best weather to try beating an oncoming semi.

Never try to beat a semi is general common sense.

Probably the sensor being covered with snow?

To the best of my knowledge it’s a headlight-only function.

The auto feature will flip between daytime running lamps (tail lights are off) when it is light out and full head light/tail light when it is dark. So police ask people to turn the lights to the ON position in bad weather. Not AUTO.

Which is what I do anyway in bad weather if I don’t see the little light icon lit up in green. But it’s easy to understand why many don’t, assuming the AUTO position will be sufficient, or they just plain forget about it.

For my car, the Auto/DRL option does include the taillights being on. I do know that not everyone’s car works that way, which is why everybody needs to know how their own vehicle works. (Yeah, I know that’s a stretch)

I know my mother’s Ford Escape does not have the taillights on unless the headlights are on. This last Monday I had to turn the dial to ON because it didn’t feel like it was dark enough for the headlights on AUTO. To be fair, it wasn’t dark at all. But it was snowing heavily AND it was blowing everywhere.

Of course it probably only made a difference for a few miles with how much snow was on the road. Whole back of the thing was covered pretty quickly.

I can’t believe how crappy of job Cedar Ave. gets plowed from entering Apple Valley all the way to Lakeville. It almost looks like they don’t plow it or run with the plow’s blades up.

Part of it may be the vehicle. The 4 wheel drive that kicks in on my CRV lets me get through snow just fine. After it has been cleared and really cold night creates ice, it turns into 4 wheel slip. Also, this thing is just old enough that ABS wasn’t required, and it is a base model so it doesn’t have it. Makes things fun!

I was doing steady speed, and once in a while felt my arse kick out a little. That’s just patches of ice that one can’t see.

Tonight? That brown slushie snow, along with tonight’s snowfall, made the roads a bit slick.

Measured just under 5 inches before doing the driveway this morning. Not so terrible with the snowblower except where it starts to slope more near the street. It was so slippery due to the freezing rain which fell before the snow that I almost lost it several times. I finally left it, saying to myself, “that’s good enough, it’ll melt eventually.”

With a few exceptions, I don’t shovel after February. The temps and sun angle are high enough to do the work for you. My south facing driveway also helps.

My neighborhood got a couple inches.

What was really strange, is that we had fog, rain, sleet, thunder, lightning, snow (and some thundersnow) and the briefest peek from the sun. MN weather, I tell ya…

I was surprised at how much we got here. Last I heard was a couple inches but it must have changed over more quickly. My snowblower was mostly ok but there a layer of wet stuff that was just enough to jam up the blower and make things more difficult

Yeah I’d guess maybe 2 here for me in Eagan. Kinda nice because the area I walk the dog in was basically all ice so the wet snow is nice to be able to get traction for walking.

At the 2:50ish mark you will see why mobile homes are a poor tornado option.

Before driving away, wouldn’t a normal person get out and look for damage?

IF I were to have found myself in that position, and the vehicle appeared to still be mostly functional, I’d be driving away and looking at damage once I’m more than a couple hundred feet from a tornado, thank you.

Maybe not tens of miles… if it’s heading directly away from me, 5 miles or so is fine.

Either way, not digging around the car with debris falling out of the sky around me.

Does he just send the video to his insurance instead of filling out a claim?

Send it to Chevy and try to get a new truck. They can use this one for advertising.

I suspect GM is already trying to get in touch with the owner.

This is crazy. A pickup is overturned, then drives away.

Honestly, whatever company made that pickup, that is their next TV commercial to show how “tough” their truck is. Not even joking.

Quoted for reference, in case Chevy does do this.

So he drove in bad weather to make sure he didn’t miss a job interview…..good for him and I am glad he got the job.

And also glad he is being offered a new truck from multiple dealerships since he bought the truck from his dad. No talk about the experience of being in the middle of a tornado…how do they not ask/show that?

It was a steady 35 mph with 50 mph gusts out here on the prairie. It was messing with the dish, but luckily it calmed down a bit before the game.

My apt complex has two buildings, but for simplicity, it’s set up like a horseshoe. That wind is a-swirlin’ right now.

You know it’s a windy late winter/early spring day when I have to find a ladder to fix the shoddy install job on my siding.
