Looking outside right now, I think I’m glad I don’t have to go anywhere today except down to the curb to get my mail.

The drive home from the airport at 12:45pm wasn’t as bad as I feared. Visibility was down to about 1/4 of a mile but there was traction on the roads. The biggest problem were all the idiots you couldn’t see in front of you because they didn’t wipe off their taillights or turn them on at all.

I think people in newer vehicles rely on the automatic light function and don’t even realize they aren’t on in conditions like this.

I was surprised by how many vehicles were driving without lights today too but the auto thing makes sense. I personally dislike the auto feature because they go on and off in the waning light of day and it’s super annoying when people think they are being flashed. And I personally just like lights on all the time for safety.

My driveway went from drifts of a foot plus to a couple of inches. Made snow-blowing it real fun. Finished, went inside for dinner and the Lakeville snowplow came through. He must’ve been going pretty good cause the snow wake was half way up the driveway.

The auto feature doesn’t always turn on the headlight in bad weather during the day. Even though the daytime running lamps are lit in the front, the taillights are not; making cars difficult to see from behind in bad weather.

On my way to hockey practice tonight some dumshit in a tiny 3 cylinder car tried pulling onto the highway in front of a semi. I was in the lane next to the semi. Thankfully I make it a habit to avoid driving right next to semis because he swerved into my lane to avoid killing the idiot. The tiny spec of a car probably only reached 20 mph with his one spinning tire as we zoomed passed him.

Not the best weather to try beating an oncoming semi.

To the best of my knowledge it’s a headlight-only function.

So police ask people to turn the lights to the ON position in bad weather. Not AUTO.

Which is what I do anyway in bad weather if I don’t see the little light icon lit up in green. But it’s easy to understand why many don’t, assuming the AUTO position will be sufficient, or they just plain forget about it.

I know my mother’s Ford Escape does not have the taillights on unless the headlights are on. This last Monday I had to turn the dial to ON because it didn’t feel like it was dark enough for the headlights on AUTO. To be fair, it wasn’t dark at all. But it was snowing heavily AND it was blowing everywhere.

Of course it probably only made a difference for a few miles with how much snow was on the road. Whole back of the thing was covered pretty quickly.

Last night’s drive was worse for me, but this morning’s drive was more deceiving. 394 looked dry, but was hitting ice patches like a mofo.

I can’t believe how crappy of job Cedar Ave. gets plowed from entering Apple Valley all the way to Lakeville. It almost looks like they don’t plow it or run with the plow’s blades up.

Part of it may be the vehicle. The 4 wheel drive that kicks in on my CRV lets me get through snow just fine. After it has been cleared and really cold night creates ice, it turns into 4 wheel slip. Also, this thing is just old enough that ABS wasn’t required, and it is a base model so it doesn’t have it. Makes things fun!

I was doing steady speed, and once in a while felt my arse kick out a little. That’s just patches of ice that one can’t see.

Tonight? That brown slushie snow, along with tonight’s snowfall, made the roads a bit slick.

With a few exceptions, I don’t shovel after February. The temps and sun angle are high enough to do the work for you. My south facing driveway also helps.

Measured just under 5 inches before doing the driveway this morning. Not so terrible with the snowblower except where it starts to slope more near the street. It was so slippery due to the freezing rain which fell before the snow that I almost lost it several times. I finally left it, saying to myself, “that’s good enough, it’ll melt eventually.”
