We got the dreaded ice down here again. Took wife 2 hours to get to work out here in the sticks.

It stayed warm enough down here in Mankato that ice really hasn’t taken hold…yet. Falling temps may make it interesting later today in spots but the DOT and City of Mankato are out treating the roads pretty well right now.

I have not yet started the snow removal yet this AM on the south end of ML.

It looks like a foot plus.

We are up at my in laws in Grant County north of Alex. They pulled the plows and no travel advised. Family said 94 closed between Fargo and Grand Forks.

We were supposed to head back today. How bad are the roads from Alex to Western suburb? Haven’t seen much about the snow or conditions in like Plymouth.

    Hit the MN511 web site.

I literally lost my parked car during a prairie blizzard when I hunkered down with teammates in their rented mobile home on the edge of town.

The drift had totally enveloped my sweet ’65 Goat.

Our back deck is just pure glazed ice! It is an accident waiting to happen when one of us needs to get to the garage.

We received about 1/2″ of snow, sealed with a shiny glaze. Clearing the sidewalk and deck was pretty easy. I’ll do the 150 foot driveway after round 2 tomorrow.

Yikes the drive on the roads to 94 and there highway until about Melrose was shear ice and did the go more than 30-40 the whole way until then.

Came home to some snow and icing on top and made for fun snowblowing with the wind and ice chunks.

Roads were slippery all day in the Plymouth/Minnetonka area. Apparently, more to come tomorrow. A positive: roads were dead. I think many took this week off from work.

We drove to the Zoo and then Hastings yesterday. I was actually surprised how good the roads were at 8:30 or 9:00am with the exception of 169 going through Minnetonka and Hopkins. It certainly helped that there wasn’t traffic but I expected to have to drive fairly slow.

I can only imagine what NW Minnesota was like on I-94. I’ve been caught in blizzards before on I-90 and that had to be comparable

It was crazy yesterday morning. Shoveling my front steps and walk. The snow and glazed ice would slide each time I tossed a scoops worth on the glazed over snow.

And I get to work, the parking lot was a dangerous sheet of ice. It was even dangerous 8 hrs. later when I left work.

Roads a little bad tonight. Watching 494 in Plymouth throughout the day, many slowdowns due to either ditches or rear-enders, judging by the position of the tow-trucks and cop cars. ;) Yeah, it was a slow day at work.

Massive fire in Boulder County CO today. It started as a brush fire but was pushed along by strong winds (100+ mph gusts) into the towns of Superior and Louisville so far. (combined populations of ~35,000).

There are at least two other brush fires ongoing in Boulder County too, but since they don’t threaten neighborhoods they’re not getting resources.

No snow, no rain for months, high winds, warm temps…

On the scanners, incident control basically just told people to stop reporting spot fires (like houses), there are too many. Just concentrate on evacuating people.

I have to, but from a Marc Maron special:

Our state is on fire right now. It’s on fire all the time. Every year, California is on fire to the point where it’s just the way it is. Two weeks ago, my friend Lynn said, “Aren’t the fires a little late this year?” How is that something you say… like it’s a season? It kinda is a season. Once a year, if you live in California, you’re like, “Ah, f*, there are ants and sh*’s burning. Must be summer.” So they are late this year. And it’s crazy, man. We just kinda live with it and they’re worse and worse, and, you know, like, you get those panicky calls from friends and relatives on the East Coast. Like, my mother will call from Florida. “Hi, are you okay?” “Yeah. What are you talking about?” “The fires.” “Oh, sh*, yeah. They’re not by me. Um…” [audience cheering] “Did– Did they… Did they say where they are on the news where you are? Where? Oh, sh*, that is kinda by me. Hold on a second, I’m gonna take a look out my front door here. Oh, sh*, Ma. I gotta call you back, I… I can see the fires. They’re, like, right here. Yeah, I gotta call you back, I gotta get a selfie with these fires. Fire’s getting close. Hashtag ouchie. Hashtag end times. Hashtag Los Angeles 2019!”

I have a cold and the wind chill is -6 so I don’t want to clear my driveway more than once. But the damn snow won’t stop failing. We are JUST on the edge of the snow but the storm is stationary. We have been on the edge for hours. This system needs to GTFO and sit in Wisconsin.

Not until next month and only for a week or so.

If the boss retires before I do (which I hope she does) I can work from home/any where including somewhere with a better climate! :)

That’s a neat area. My parents are in an area called The Lakes in Palm Desert, basically across Cooke from the huge Marriott complex.

Love San Diego and a great place to bring kids, we brought YE and his sister one year over Thanksgiving and had a wonderful time. We started there and ended in Palm Springs before going home and the trek up the mountain to see the Mt. Polymer observatory was wicked cool. If you’re looking for a cool outdoor eating option look at George’s Ocean Terrace in La Jolla. Great views, especially at sunset, and the food was tremendous when the boss and I ate there.

I didn’t know it could be too cold for blinkers to work. I turned on the right one, nothing happened for five seconds and then the left one started flashing. Sometimes they wouldn’t even come on.

Can you put antifreeze in the blinker fluid?

    Definitely check the blinker fluid.

We just moved to a new house and the amount of condensation and some ice build up around the windows is concerning. Not sure what to do about it.

I find that this blinker fluid doesn’t freeze up. It’s a hefty penny, but worth every penny.

If recent new construction & has an air exchanger then run the exchanger more often.

For frozen turn signals / blinkers, roll down the window and use arm signals like a old school biker. 😂

If you have an in home humidifier checking the settings and turn it down a little bit. We usually have to do that in the winter but if you start getting shocked with everything then turn it back up

Is the ice build up on the inside? You may have some seals broken and the water is seeping up under them and freezing. We have a little bit of this every year but since the house still has the original windows (38 years old) we are planning to finally replace them this year I think

Have you ever been impacted by the spring ice migration? The videos are amazing/scary and I’d imagine the south and east shores are more susceptible.

No. We are in Wahkon Bay. I look out at Half Moon Island and I have seen ice piled up into the trees on the north end.

When the wind is the right way I’ve seen both Spirit ( the island you see off 169) and Hennepin (off 47) totally covered 30′ + with ice. The videos out there really are something. Back when tBeliever was in grade school my parents came & took her and her older sister to see it at Izatys. Kate was on the news with the comment “It’s cool”.

It’s a little concerning for being windows installed 12 years ago. If you have a humidifier, I would check that like davescharf mentioned. You could also look into insulating the windows for the remainder of winter.

    Definitely check the blinker fluid.

We just moved to a new house and the amount of condensation and some ice build up around the windows is concerning. Not sure what to do about it.

I think there was a pretty in depth convo about that a year ago on here if you search back. That’s about all the help I can provide except to move to a warmer climate. :)

Random question, we have a newer house (~2010) and all the windows are full of condensation, especially the colder days and now there is a layer of ice on the bottom. The water pools and is getting on the wood of the frames so worried about damage.

From what I read, older houses with bad windows would but how do people solve it? We just bought the house so haven’t dealt with it before. From what I can read, maybe need to adjust humidity in the house

Can you put antifreeze in the blinker fluid?

Is it a BMW? I’ve noticed BMW turn signals don’t often work when the weather is warm…..

    Right, @Armadillo?

What in the Sam Scratch is a “turn signal?”

It’s that extra thing that you have no clue how to use. Kinda like that extra screw or two when you build something you bought from IKEA.

That’s funny, I literally just finished building 2 things from IKEA minutes ago for the daughters dorm room. Lots of extra screws, I appreciate it but it’s also mildly concerning.

It appears we may get some snow out here in the sticks.

Fargo cancelled schools for today last night about 9pm ahead of a predicted 6-8” of snow. Currently there is maybe 2” on the ground and it’s about done snowing.

I hate even bringing up how it was when I was a kid, but how soft we have gotten in this day and age is really worrisome.

Mankato did the same thing last night. We have about 3″ of snow on the ground and the snow flakes are really small now, barely accumulating at this point. I don’t see getting the 6″-8″ they thought we would.

I don’t disagree, but I’d guess that with the staffing issues going on right now, schools are probably looking for any reason to cancel in-person classes.

We also have become an extremely litigious society. Find a reason to sue anybody. If you are a Supt. of a school district I have to believe that there is legal advice rendered on calling off classes.

Our despicable EB neighbor actually told us once that she looks for class action lawsuits to join to see if she can get a few bucks thrown her way to go away. We no longer have anything to do with her. BTW.

Based on the radar right now it looks to me like we’re going to get more than what the weather guys were predicting last night on the 10:00pm news. Traffic to and from the game tonight should be lots of fun!

I’m a winter person through and through… I love the snow. The only real negative about the snow when I lived in Mpls. was when it snowed during the day. My apt. complex was in the downtown area and by time I got home the sidewalks were mostly trampled down, making it more difficult to shovel and remove the snow. Now it’s a breeze living in the burbs and snowing during the day. Just get home, fire up the snow blower and run it up and down the drive way and shovel the walk way to the house!!!

Some might put me first on the list even!

I would add to this that with distance learning now understood as a readily available option, why might districts even take the risks. Seems like we will see more snow days from districts going forward and being earlier to pull the trigger just to avoid problems, and go with the distance days instead. There was a limit of 11 total distance days in a year prior to covid, but I think the Dept of Ed has pretty much waived that since.

I believe that is why so many schools pulled the trigger last night to close schools. A four day weekend might make sense right now.

I only have the observation of how distance learning went for my 3 grandkids. It went fine but the 2 oldest had both been NHS inductees as Jrs and very good students. Both in college when distance learning became prevalent.

Youngest just turned 10 & is in a Spanish immersion program in a STEM school. Stay at home mom & they have super turbo powered internet speed so again no problem.

I think it is the kids that need more 1 on 1 help who loose out on distance learning. Also kids in poor, rural districts. Then the rural districts are the ones that close. Last year in the worst of the shutdown the districts up here had buses deliver both lesson plans and meals to the kids at home.

Got about 6-7 inches in the Ridgedale area. Got windier as the day went on. Snow was a little heavy, too. Not quite heart attack snow, but it wasn’t fluffy, either.

As a person who has friends with children in preschool/elementary school, they seem to prefer early cancelation when it comes to work and planning childcare. Especially for those that are back to working in the office. Probably quite a bit easier to find someone who can watch the kids at 8-9pm the night before than at 530-630am the morning of.
