Others haven’t chosen the new school yet

Normal students don’t have to take a year off if they transfer, it is completely unreasonable to force athletes to do it just because we as fans are selfish and don’t want them to leave.

If your coach left you were usually able to get a waiver to transfer and be eligible for play immediately,

No, Smilanic and Sillinger the top forwards in there? I heard ASU going hard after Sillinger.

Not a lot left for Goalies. St Cyr top guy?? I imagine Cameron Rowe could end up in there soon given they picked up Mercyhurst kid

Smilanic has to be the top player in there at the moment as a WJC team member with three years of eligibility left.

He has taken part but the guy left in the middle of the 5th season.

There should be some control around this for sure. As example, Cruikshank will play for 3 schools during his NCAA career. Now, maybe the U said you are one and done here and that’s why he’s moving on for this 5th year and ok then. But it feels like there should be some sort of parameters. Wide open free agency doesn’t feel like the right outcome. Moving the pendulum somewhere to the middle seems right.

But there is no real middle ground on this one. Everyone gets a free transfer. No more fake rules, no more the NCAA pretending they make legit decisions on waivers…everyone is equal. That is the way it should be. The more you try and regulate this stuff the worse it gets especially with a joke of an organization like the NCAA. Ask Marcus Carr…

I would assume Cruikshank has graduated and if that is the case I have zero issue with him transferring again. It is his choice and his life and if doesn’t bother him then more power to him.

Most of the issues people have will disappear when the COVID years are over. Then the real rules kick in and you only get the first transfer free. Grad transfers seem to be a weird spot going forward no one seems to know if that counts or not. It sucks the amount of shifting going on right now but I also think this is the fairest way to do this and things will even out sooner or later. Within a couple years, after players start to see that the portal for the vast majority of them is a massive risk, they will stop jumping ship every time they sneeze. Right now though they think they are going to make a lifechanging shift when in reality they are probably more likely to end up nowhere at all. We are still in the honeymoon period.

Right but that isn’t my point. Coaches could leave unpenalized for any reason. Players couldn’t. That is ridiculous.

Motzko came to coach here because it was his dream job. He was under contract with the SCCC at the time. He wasn’t required to wait any amount of time one day he was a Husky, the next he was a Gopher. End of story and no one ever questions it.

If [insert player name here] was at say Western Michigan but all his life all he dreamed of was playing for Michigan State because he is from East Lansing and his family played there. Michigan State had open roster spots and would hold one for him if he wanted it. Why should he have to wait a year to play?

Why should an athletic scholarship or LOI be more binding than a coaches contract? If anything the players should have an easier path than coaches do…coaches are adults with unlimited earning potential based on their position. Players are barely adults (insert Mankato joke here) and their earnings are pretty much capped.

Samoskevich/Duke/maybe Beecher if he changes his mind.

Most of their production will come from a strong freshman class. Not all of these guys will be in but:

    https://www.eliteprospects.com/team/803/univ.-of-michigan/2022-2023?tab=stats

Minnesota, Michigan, and Notre Dame should be the contenders for the conference next season again.

I was just reading about that freshman class coming in…13 players signed NLI. I thought we were going to have a large incoming class. Also in my googling I see that Mel played high school hockey at Edina East…that explains it…cake eater!

I had kind of forgotten that. His dad was Canadian but was playing for the Fighting Saints back in the WHA days.

I wonder if a core of players leaving hints at some bigger changes in the program…. (ie bye Mel) – or maybe they want to get away from his culture where he asked them to lie and such.

I’m not sure if this is the right spot for this but a guy I know (whioux fan) just very seriously told me that if Ben Meyers entered the portal he would not have any interest in him going to UND.

If Meyers told bob he would only come back if bob wore pink suits all year, bob would be in pink suits. These people are nuts

Have to remember that a few of those Michigan players could’ve turned pro last year and they all decided to come back for 1 run at a title. If Minnesota were to find a way to get LaCombe and/or Johnson to come back, they would likely have a similar group turning pro next summer

What if you could only use your free transfer after your freshman year or after graduating (I guess only if you graduate in three since the 5th year will go away)? Otherwise sit a year. Seems fair and in line with academics.

That is way too arbitrary and would been seen as a step backwards.

And how is it more in line with academics? If a student at Carlson wants to transfer he can tomorrow. (if he does the required legwork of course) Why should athletes be held to a harder standard.

Sure if you’re okay with the free for all, but I’m trying to think of creative solutions for the people that are already whining about it.

Transfer after one year: Hate the coach or hate the school (or better team, more playing time, etc obviously but let’s act like academics matter)

Transfer after undergrad: Pursue a graduate degree wherever desired (or better team, more playing time, etc obviously but let’s act like academics matter)

As a fan it would be clear. You’d be watching for freshmen entering the portal and for rumors of those that have completed their undergrad.

You still have five years to play your 4 seasons for everyone else…

Obviously this is all hypothetical, but in this scenario I’d also advocate for a penalty-free transfer in case of a coaching change.

So their D next year is:

    Kaiser

    Gallatin

    Gotz

    Francis

    +

    Pierce

    Bodnarchuk

    Dubinsky

Portal pickups (cough Brinkman cough or Kjellberg/Daschke)

A weaker unit by their recent standards.

No offense, but who cares? Coaches get paid a lot of money to deal with that, much more than a professor does. Btw while Carlson won’t have that issue, as someone who works at a college want to know how “students leaving the school” has affected my program? Put it this way it is a lot worse than if Motzko has to sign another player :bored:

Sorry but “oh no we might be short a forward” doesn’t offset the right of the player to you know, want to play elsewhere.

And funny the fans seem to only care about other teams doing it. Whenever their team brings in a transfer I never hear them say “I hope he sits a year because this is BS!”. I am sure that is just a coincidence though ;) Probably also a coincidence no one seemed to mind when Lucia left CC to come here…or Motzko leaving SCCC to come here.

This is the crap that happens when people try and have their cake and eat it too. The NCAA and the fans of the schools want an amateur model in place for the players, but they want professional level money thrown at facilities, coaches and the like. They want a top end production, they want great TV contracts and they want the best of the best. (just look at all the whining we see every year about our games on TV) Sorry but the NCAA and the schools (and us fans) kicked the can down the road for too long trying to keep things the way they used to be while raking in billions and now it is biting everyone in the butt. Coaches and schools for years would control when a player could transfer and even sometimes where they could transfer. The NCAA made up joke regulations to let some players get waivers but not all and lets not even get into the selective enforcement of the “student” part of student athlete.

I personally hate the transfer portal because it is everything I loathe about pro sports. (everyone is a mercenary) But what I prefer isn’t what matters. They are the ones playing the game and considering how much various enterprises make off those players (including the coaches) they have every right to be able to say “this was a bad decision, I would like to go somewhere else” without having to waste a year not playing. What’s next bring back the “Only sophomores can play” crap from the 1970s?

There was proposals for fixing the transfer issues for years and everyone whined and rejected them. (many were better than this crap) Just like there were proposals for fixing “Western Hockey” so the sport could expand and the leagues could stay pretty much the same. The fans didn’t want to mess with the WCHA though they just wanted to keep adding teams and mess with the schedules more so we got our games with NoDak and the Minnesota schools. Enter the Big Ten. The more you fight the inevitable, the more likely you are to end up with some thing way worse than what was suggested before.

I don’t disagree that coaches pull this stuff too.

But they (usually) have a financial punishment attached to breaking a contract. Even if it isn’t a severe punishment, it is there. This free agency model for athletes has no disincentives at all. It’s a free for all that really doesn’t make their sport better on the whole.

    Quote:

Normal students don’t have to take a year off if they transfer, it is completely unreasonable to force athletes to do it just because we as fans are selfish and don’t want them to leave.

Sorry but the comparison between a regular student transfer and a student-athlete transfer misses the mark here. In the past, the athlete could leave a school, go to a new school, and still get an education at the new school (like every normal student that might transfer). They just couldn’t participate in their sport the following year.

I don’t really see any downside to allowing the transfer portal and immediately playing the next year unless you’re a NCAA coach, which none of us are.

The financial penalty was a joke often paid by the new school. Some disincentive

No matter how much you want to believe the “sit out a year” thing is fair and makes sense it really isn’t and it never was. It was a measure of control the schools held and it kept bigger schools from raiding smaller schools which is great, but it also basically hamstrung student athletes in situations that maybe weren’t right for them because transferring meant they would be further behind. All because of a decision they made when they were 17 or 18. An NLI is not a non-compete clause.

I believe it has been stated Sorensen is leaving due to what will likely be a lack of playing time next year. Should he be forced to not play a year because of it? What if he doesn’t want to be in school another 2 years should he be forced to decide to either quit school or stay here and likely barely play? Come on…

I acknowledged that it usually wasn’t a huge thing. But, as I stated, it is something. There is nothing with regard to the athlete.

Keeping it to a hockey perspective here… but does it really put a player further behind? In a sport where we see guys playing at age 24, I think it is a stretch to say it puts them “behind” in any real way. Especially when the main competitive strategy (at some programs) is to be older than the rest.

Personally, I appreciate athletes that find their role in a program and work hard at it (and work hard to be better each year and potentially earn better spots at that program). Some of the guys that many Gopher fans lauded in the last 20 years were players who embraced their role even though they weren’t getting the prime spots. They became fan favorites because they worked hard, battled, showed character, and did what the team needed done to win. They have value. They embraced the challenges and kept at it. I like those kinds of guys… and I love that attitude.

To each their own. I loathe the portal mindset for most of the ones that partake in it (I won’t paint with a broad brush on all of them).

I would imagine he’d be the first person ever to transfer from Harvard to Mankato if that happens

So their D next year is: Kaiser Gallatin Gotz Francis + Pierce Bodnarchuk Dubinsky Portal pickups (cough Brinkman cough or Kjellberg/Daschke) A weaker unit by their recent standards.

    Daschke to UMD

That’s a nice one year pickup for tUMD, Daschke has 80+ career points as a Defenseman at Miami along with being their Captain👍

Your post got me curious so I looked this guy up – it appears he played ACHA Club Hockey at Harvard. I did not expect to see club hockey guys in the D1 transfer portal.

So I wasn’t going to post him when I saw that too, but he was on and off the varsity roster so that’s why he was included.

He’s presumably got a degree from Harvard, so club hockey or NCAA he’s in at least one elite group either way!

With how little Cruikshank and Broz provided last season we are really concerned about this?

I will wait and see. You are obsessed with NHL draft status. I’m not. He looked mediocre at best this year.

Look for it in year 3 and 4. Huglen and Pitlick look better than him but he had a top 9 role waiting for him, 100%.

Pittsburgh wouldn’t be very happy if he’s playing college hockey that long.
