I don’t get the ammo hoarding thing really. Take me for instance, I only duck and pheasant hunt so that is a particular set of ammo that I will purchase. The three sizes of shot that I use for that have rarely been on the shelf at Fleet Farm or Scheels here in Mankato. Now I don’t drive all over the countryside like my future son-in-law does to find ammo that he probably won’t even shoot this year. I had enough ammo left over from last year to go out a couple weekends this fall. I checked a hand full of times for ammo and it wasn’t on the shelf so I didn’t hunt after I was out. It didn’t feed some fire in me to hoard ammo every time I see it on the shelf throughout the year. The sad thing is you hear that it may take anywhere from 3 to 5 years to get ammo shelves full like they were in 2019.

Both of them regularly shoot at ranges, go trap shooting, go hunting in multiple states, etc. So I believe they go through more ammo that your average Joe. Based on what they have told me, they feel that there will come a time in the very near future that 1) you will not be able to buy many types of ammo other than a few very specific types for hunting and 2) that people will be coming to take away your guns and ammo even if legally owned. So they buy it regularly and have cases and cases of multiple types of rounds for their multiple firearms. For personal use present, future, and anticipated need. Right or wrong, it is their opinion and their main rationale for hoarding that much. Right now, one of them has said “if I see it, I buy it” and bragged about him and a buddy or buddies, buying out one store shortly before rifle season opened this year.

I could be walking a very fine line here, and this post can get deleted if necessary.

Maybe they should set limits, like target did on TP during the shortage so it’s fair to all.

Most stores have. Fleet Farm limits you to five boxes of .22 ammunition (the only ammo I buy – I reload everything else), Scheels just recently removed their limits, but their prices aren’t exactly a bargain, and last time I checked, Cabela’s still had a daily purchase limit.

The US relies heavily upon goods from countries that are not nearly as “up and running” as a percentage of the labor force and as such that is significantly impacting supply channels.

As for the price of gas, the US is not even in the Top 100 of countries for the highest average price per so consider yourselves lucky.

Some limits on select spirits have been implemented in a few areas, too. Maker’s Mark in PA comes to mind.

Part of the issue for many manufacturers is their processes require movement of semi-finished goods from one location to another because locations are specialized. The increased time on the water for container shipments coupled with the shortage of truckers has hit these supply chains hard.

Supply chain has hit my company hardcore. That, and hiring people. I do not work a glamorous job. It does pay well, benefits, PTO, but it’s tedious. Most people looking for work say “nah.” Currently we are about 2 people short of being 2 people short. As for supply, the most obvious clue is that my building usually carried around 50-60 pallet jacks. As of today, we have none.

One of our most popular paper products, we usually have about 1000 cases. We have 50~ cases or so right now. The glitch will be fixed, it’s just a matter of when.

My Company is down from a high of 42 employees in mid-2019. We had several people leave before 2020 as a start. Several people have left during this situation as well. We are down to 33 employees now. We are busy and have jobs posted, we interview and make offers, no one is accepting. The principals claim “Millennials just expect too much, this is ridiculous”. Their actual words in a meeting. We are BUSY and our clients are paying thankfully.

We dropped our 401k partial match when this started. Then everyone took a 5% cut a few months later, and wages have been frozen ever since. No bonus (holiday or otherwise of any kind) for 2+ years. The medical benefit is a 50/50 split of the cost for employee, and 20/80 split of cost for spouse/dependents. One employee left because the 20% the firm pays was then deducted from his pay, when he tried to add his wife, to keep his “Overall Compensation Package” the same — if they covered the 20% it would be like giving him a raise. I have never heard of another company doing that, although it probably does happen.

Lots of other places are increasing benefits, or at least bringing pre-COVID benefits back. Out of everyone I talk to in my industry we are the only ones without even a partial 401k match. The 50/50 medical split is a pretty low benefit with only 1 plan option. You start with 2 weeks vacation and do not accrue until you’ve been there 4 months. 3 weeks does not come until you have been there 7 years. We don’t have any paid parental leave or anything, just whatever PTO time you have.

I mean, when your benefits aren’t on par with what is being offered in the industry, it is going to be pretty hard for exceptional people to accept offers to work there. I know places are struggling to hire for other reasons, but I think plenty of places (including my place of work) it is at least partially self inflicted.

My benefits/insurance is untouched. No pay cuts. When we raised min wage for the company, the veteran employees wages were raised in relation (one of bigger concerns).

As for PTO, it’s an algorithm of hours per month, dunno what the ratio is, but since I’ve been there so long, I don’t care (get about 6.5 weeks/per year, 40 hrs carryover). I think the 3 week PTO comes after 5 years, 4 after 10, 5 after 15, 6+ after 20, roughly, give or take a couple days.

    W

ETO (emergency time off) is there, also, have limited allocation for that, does not count toward PTO, but it’s a rare case thing, and it is watched hard-core. Stuff like car accident, health issues, etc, that are not generally “Oh, I’m sick.”

Yeah, we don’t have any ETO or anything. We get 3 weeks off for everything, max. 2 weeks to start, 3 weeks after 7 years. After having kids, at least a week every year is for sick kids.

In fact, now we are at home with our daycare closed due to a COVID outbreak. I have hardly any PTO time left and will have to take time unpaid likely to deal with the situation. Plus pay full price for daycare, even while the center is closed, so they can still pay their employees… Nevermind that I am having to take time without pay because of it. Just frustrating all around. I am probably extra bitter right now given my situation.

Day care thing is weird. Oftentimes, the parent wants to work, but that just offsets the daycare costs. I’d rather be a stay at home parent if the cost/earnings work out to be the same. Spend the time bonding with my kid, y’know?

Nah. You’re just a free agent. If another place offers a better situation you go with them or tell your company they have a chance to match. This isn’t something you can do in a union.

My wife is in a union (teachers) and they don’t get crap for raises, if any at all, and my benefits are much better.

I was a UBC member. Trade unions are different than industrial (Steelworkers, Teamsters, oil & Chemical) unions & ” professional associations” (MEA, MAPE). Unions (Trade) are an extension of guilds. You have a craft that you practice.

My pension is paid by our benefits admin. , not one of the many contractors I worked for. We have both struck and honored other trade unions banners when they struck. I was able to be paid over scale, at times. Never did I have to take less than scale and we voted on accepting or rejecting new contracts.

I fell into my career. After getting my B.A. I spent a year as the GA OL coach where I played. I had worked non union as a summer job so after 1 semester at Wm Mitchell and hating it, being broke, and being in the Cities, I had a friend get me on his crew. Labored for a year, got in the UBC, eventually became a job supt.

I wouldn’t change a thing. I’m proud of my skilled labor and made money for my employers.

Dealing with my first head cold in the past 3 years and it’s a whopper. Not being able to breathe through my nose is a major issue because I sleep with a CPAP. I’m supposed to take tickets at my kiddo’s BB game tomorrow but I probably won’t be able to do it. If I cough or sneeze once, everybody will think I have the Rona and will flip out.

As a supt. I was head hunted a couple times.

moonrider and I partnered up a few times, for example. I went to my employer and told them I had another offer and got a sweeter deal, twice. Eventually I left & frankly became a mercenary. I would run the job I was needed on, and then would move on

Not all unions are effective but the ones that are definitely raise the standards for pay and benefits.

This is concerning. I typically download my tickets to my phone right before I leave for the game. If I can’t access through the app, how am I supposed to download my tickets?

        EDIT:

I figured it out. If you use the “Visit gophersports.com” link in the app, you can log into your account (click on Tickets –> My Account). It brings up your available tickets, and by clicking on the appropriate date, you can save the tickets to your phone.

Why do people think staying at a hotel is like being at a frat house? Doors slamming, loud talking in the middle of the night. We usually stay in a hotel on the Friday nights of Gopher home games and it amazes me on the lack of respect people have for each other.

I completely forgot about this until something reminded me. Why in the actual fuck does the MSHSL use video replay during the state semi-final and final football games but not during ANY OTHER PLAYOFF GAME???!!!!!

It happened twice during the Mankato West game on Saturday night. Both were double checking turnovers, which one was a TD. It was annoying but also why is it necessary? Referees have to make decisions all season long without the aid of video replay. Why during the last three games at US Bank? To me it just makes the refs a little lazy and not have to pay that close of attention to goal line calls or first down calls. Such BS

It’s that time of year when people post their Spotify Wrapped list and I am still over here…what is the big deal with Spotify. I don’t like the interface to be able to listen to the artists or even genre I want to listen to. Neither Pandora or Spotify will mix up songs or again I don’t understand the interface to get random songs in that genre or artist instead of the same 10 damn songs when I click whatever the hell I need to get music going.

I have tried in recent years to understand how to really use Spotify but I have never got the hang of it.

I like Pandora. I have used it for years for free, dealt with the commercials, but while I drive 25,000 miles a year for work, I have customized my playlists with the thumbs up button. People comment all the time how good my stations are. Finally bit the bullet this summer on the premium and it got rid of the commercials which was good. My kids like Spotify. I guess I haven’t ever tried it, nor care to.

I have tried in recent years to understand how to really use Spotify but I have never got the hang of it.

I guess it depends upon what you’re looking to do but there is an endless array of playlists you can tap into. The best way to get started is to like artists and songs. From that Spotify has algorithms to suggest other artists and songs to you daily and weekly. For instance I have liked 2 suggested playlists – Discover Weekly and Release Radar. The former suggests deeper cuts of artists I’ve liked + similar, Release Radar is new releases from the same.

If you like Led Zeppelin you can go to their page, follow them, see their albums including live, EPs, sometimes rare releases, see playlists that include Zeppelin and then similar artists, they will suggest the most popular artists that fans of Led Zeppelin also like, offer artist playlists, you can play “Led Zeppelin radio” which mixes in their songs with others, if the band is on tour it will show when and where, etc.

Spotify has a huge list of podcasts including GPL, JRE, Your Mom’s House, 2 Bears 1 Cave and hundreds of others.

Spotify suggests 6 different daily mixes for me based upon genres.

I have created a playlist of full albums that has 7,949 songs on it which I often just play at random from my laptop, my phone, or I bluetooth the phone with my car radio. I’ve created playlists for my wife. We have a family account for all 4 of us and my sons and I send suggestions to each other back and forth all the time. My eldest likes a lot of what I like plus his own, my youngest is more into hip hop but also likes some of what I like, and they both introduce me to stuff I haven’t heard before.

I must have 50+ playlists and/or radio stations saved and liked.

My liked songs list is now over 3,000 and I can play that on mix.

Or if you want a specific genre there hundreds of them. Rock this, rock that, country this, country that. ‘

It does take a bit of time investment to get there but once you do it’s worth it, and then it just builds and builds the more you listen and like.

The only time I use Spotify is when I’m doing outdoor work like cutting the grass, trimming, blowing snow, etc. I have it paired with my Bose noise-cancelling headphones which works great. Can barely hear the power equipment motors while the music comes through clear as a bell and as loud as you want.

The out of control egos and lack of respect for their opponents have me really questioning the Brands brothers of Iowa as leaders of the Iowa Hawkeye wrestling team. Don’t get me wrong, I love the fact that Iowa beat Iowa State last night in Ames. But the pure lack of respect, especially shown by assistant head coach Terry Brands, is just damn embarrassing. He almost instigated a fight between the two teams at the conclusion of the meet. Several Iowa wrestlers projected their coaches attitude during their matches, which weren’t dominating by any stretch of the imagination. I wish Terry could learn from his son Nelson, who won a very close match, who at the end of his match didn’t over celebrate and calmly shook the hand of his opponent to show his respect for him.

I have no love for Austin DeSanto and his antics and I am now getting fed up with Terry Brands as well. Give me a team full of Alex Marinelli’s who works his ass off and always shows respect for his opponent at the end of the match. The thing is that I see this over the top behavior even at the high school level. Coaches and officials let so much crap slide. I would ding a team a point every time that I would see it happen. It is just B.S.

Seen YouTube clips of DeSanto wrestling and interviews. Complete db… Hopefully someone can knock him off his perch. It would be great to see him knocked off in the first round at Nationals and watch him and the Brands brothers cry.

It’s the professional wrestling “show” filtered down to college and HS sports. The puffed up chest, smack talking, clenched fist/open mouth scream that is everywhere. I hate it. It’s not just wresting, other sports are just as bad.

It’s not much of a surprise, the system is closing in on being 8 years old, but still… The good news is that despite four failed drives in one array my data is still accessible!

LOL. When I was a teenager I stayed at my aunt/uncle’s farm and they had a rooster that would only do half of the call. ER-er-ER-er…… He wouldn’t finish with “errrrrRRRRR”

It drove me insane. I had thoughts of taking it out.

We need an only in the Dakota’s thread. :D This promotion at a game last weekend’s Stampede game has caused an uproar to some around Whioux Falls and now it is getting national attention. They had 10 teachers grabbing the $5000 in cash they made available on a rug at center ice.

I would do this for any worthy charity and not for one second think it was beneath me. It’s OK to have fun while grabbing money for charities or schools.

I am intentionally avoiding the politics of the school funding. I ask everyone else to do the same.

This was not a well thought out promotion but the “outrage” is a bit much. It would have been way better PR to present each teacher with a check for $500 for classroom supplies.

I wouldn’t expect the teachers to feel it was beneath them, and interviews with them don’t show that any of them did. The optics were bad. The outrage comes from the political arena on the subject so I’ll refrain from going into any of it as well.

When I was in HS we had teachers/coaches do dunk-tanks and things like that with the money going to the school, or a specific group within the school. So things like that definitely happen, and most signed up voluntarily. If the teachers signed up voluntarily and knew in advance, I see zero issue with it. If it was presented differently or they were volunteered by the school, and then this happened… I can see how someone would take issue with it.

Even a competition, where first place gets the most and last place still gets some, is a better “donation” than having people crawl around on their hands and knees grabbing as many dollar bills as they can. Like you said, the optics are just not real great. Like trixR4kids ‘s point. They would never have a police or fire department donation that looks like that. Because it is somewhat humiliating.

They ended up giving them just that. The 21 or so teachers that entered the contest, and those 10 that participated, now got a minimum of $500 after the “outrage”. It started out as a typical Facebook/social media outrage and then the local media picked it up followed by some national coverage. I just shake my head sometimes.

I think this is a fair summary. In retrospect the event doesn’t have the greatest optics but beyond that people settle down.

Since all youth hockey players have to pay $50 every year to support Hockey USA and it’s development teams, we are on a mailing list for USA hockey. It’s usually not a problem. But lately they have been sending out near daily emails trying to sell USA vs Canada women’s team tickets at the X.

Based on the volume of advertising I am guessing they have approximately 17,250 seats left to sell.

They need to stop the goddamn emails for this game. I am WELL aware of it by now.

My parents, both in their 80s, found out yesterday that they had been exposed to COVID on Friday. The were tested yesterday and are waiting for results. (Exposure was Friday, they learned of it on Tuesday -edited for clarity)

They’re both vaccinated and boosted. And the chances are very good that they’ve been exposed to COVID before now considering they live in an area with relatively low vaccine rates, but still the suspense sucks.

So i’ve posted before that I collect antique Christmas ornaments and belong to an international collectors group. Today the hot topic on our FB page is the news story on the Grandma in England who was just awarded the Guiness World Record for most Christmas ornaments….1760. We are all flummoxed and laughing as I could name a dozen friends with more ornaments then that. I HAVE MORE ORNAMENTS THEN THAT! I currently have close to 2000 on a 9 ft tree and that’s about 2/3 of my collection. Guiness certainly did not do any sort of due diligence on this one. Sounds like a sweet old lady said OOOOOH I have lots of ornaments and they just said OK.

A very petty gripe, very Grinchy. We’re all laughing and plotting on bombarding Guiness with photos of all our collections. :biggrin2: That old lady’s going down.

Photo please. I’d like to see a tree with that many ornaments. It has to be dense.

They’re both vaccinated and boosted. And the chances are very good that they’ve been exposed to COVID before now considering they live in an area with relatively low vaccine rates, but still the suspense sucks.

We’re all exposed to it frequently. Its just a matter of duration of exposure and the level of exposure. Sharing a glass? Or standing on opposite sides of the room?

Twice a week they eat lunch at the senior center. The person with the positive test was one of the people dishing up food in the cafeteria-style line. This person also then wandered around while people ate and bussed tables. The confirmed COVID person was masked most/all of the time, but my parents were eating and therefore not masked all the time.

They probably weren’t in very close proximity for very long, but they were in the same room for around 45 minutes.

Like you say, I’m sure they’ve been exposed before and just not known it.

We are all exposed to this level of COVID every time we go out. I have been fairly conservative with COVID and I would not consider this risky. If they’re boosted, they would hopefully have minimal risk.

When my 10 year old had COVID, I sat with him at a table twice for an hour each to help him with school and I didn’t get infected. This was Nov 2020, before vaccines were available and we were not wearing masks. This was before Delta and Omicron so things have changed, but the time of exposure doesn’t sound prolonged.

I approve of this plan. Each person gets their certificate, and the next one in line calls up Guinness…

You didn’t have symptoms, or you tested to know you truly weren’t infected?!

I was exposed several weeks ago. Even shared a taster of beer with the person who subsequently tested positive (we were all fully vaxxed and asymptomatic at the time but it was two days after we were together their symptoms began). I never developed symptoms or tested positive.

I developed cold symptoms on vacation last weekend and feared the worst. But two negative rapid tests and a negative PCR later it’s truly just a cold.

Anyone ever done those home test kits? It’s amazing how long 15 seconds takes when you’re rolling a swab around up your nose (and you have to do this both sides!), it’s a great way to induce repetitive sneezing too!

I waited the recommended 3 weeks and went to the Dr for an antibody test and they all came back negative.

And yes, we did the at home COVID test before thanksgiving this year so we wouldn’t infect older family members. I also had a version of a home test after crossing the border to Canada

I just had Covid last week and both my wife and son have tested negative multiple times. My symptoms started with sinus congestion that I treated that way and I got better for a couple days and then I got hit with body aches for a couple days. I did the spit test when my body aches started. My wife brought home a handful of rapid tests from her work for her and my son. Now my son has developed cold symptoms this week and has tested negative twice with rapid tests and I took him in for a spit test which was negative so he luckily just has a bad cold. Which he gets a bad cold every winter about this time.

My son isn’t a fan of the rapid test with the swab up the nose. He can’t do it himself so I did the pleasure and I have to watch out for him swinging if I go to long. He would agree that 15 seconds takes a long time. Now when I took him in for his spit test we were both amazed by this little blonde girl that came in after us. She had her test done and out of there in half the time it took my son…we both laughed about that.

Pro tip- save up spit while you’re standing in line. I got in and one spit and I was done. 😂 An old guy at the table next to me was complaining to his wife “I don’t know how I’m going to make this much spit!” I’ve found yawning helps too.
