ADMIN: This is a new thread containing the last year + of the old thread. We’ve been getting a little worn out on Asian takeout food lately so we got takeout from Pimento last night on Eat Street. Their jerk chicken and jerk pork is just so good.

::I need to get Pimento it’s been a while, you’re right about their jerk chicken and I assume the pork is just as good. Also I hope they’re still doing ok but Harry Singh’s also has jerk chicken/roti and is really good, it’s like two blocks away from there. I remember when the owner told us to try the hot sauce (Caribbean Fire Pepper) and I was able to manage it (keep in mind the jerk chicken is already pretty spicy on its own), but it was definitely a notch higher than most “spicy” stuff in MN. I think he brought a bunch of water to our table and everyone downed it so quickly and he just came back laughing, now with a pitcher of water in hand.

If Saturday night was any indication I’d say they’re hanging in there. It was pretty busy and it’s more conducive to takeout than other places

::Subway is being sued as their tuna salad is said to contain no tuna. https://www.startribune.com/2-customers-sue-subway-claiming-tuna-is-anything-but-tuna/600016634/ Personally, Subway is last on my list for sub places to go to. I’d rather go to Firehouse, Jersey Mikes, or Jimmy Johns.

I personally question, and definitely avoid, the origins of any ‘tuna’ that comes out of a can.

 I worked in restaurants for years. I’d NEVER order tuna salad, egg salad at one. And never get spicy tuna roll at a sushi place. It’s days old tuna with hot sauce to cover up the “old”.That said, if it’s not tuna at Subway, what is it? Is this another walleye/zander controversy?

“ The star ingredient, according to the lawsuit, is “made from anything but tuna.” Based on independent lab tests of “multiple samples” taken from Subway locations in California, the “tuna” is “a mixture of various concoctions that do not constitute tuna, yet have been blended together by defendants to imitate the appearance of tuna,” according to the complaint. Shalini Dogra, one of the attorneys for the plaintiffs, declined to say exactly what ingredients the lab tests revealed.”

The people filing the lawsuit don’t say; just that they ran it through the TunaTester5000 or whatever and it came back ‘NO TUNA’ or any other kind of fish. I’d wait for a second source or for the lawsuit to actually be resolved before drawing any firm conclusions on that.

That’s putting it mildly. Claiming that it isn’t tuna, without saying what your tests actually show it is composed of seems unusual.

That’s was my question, the lawsuit is very vague. Say what it is if it isn’t tuna. Or is it a variety of tuna, hence my walleye-zander reference. Remember that brewhaha a while back?Steve MN

Agreed, but at least there, Zander is also referred to as “European Walleye” as I recall, and it was just a few small local places, not a huge international chain.

Jimmy Johns proudly displays their gallon cans of tuna on the back wall. It’s no different than what you buy in the grocery store, just bigger. So there’s that.Slap Shot

Maybe it’s like surimi, fake crab? Other fish pulverized, flavored and reformed into a tuna substitute? Who knows. The Rube

If it’s not actually tuna, that could make sense. But the allegation in the lawsuit is that it isn’t even fish, and any actually scientific test would show surimi as being fish, at least.

They did and rightfully so. I had a Korean Rib pizza at Young Joni’s a couple of years ago that is my current gold standard for pizza.

That really sucks. Hope they are able to reopen their others. Becker-St. Pierre joints are among my favorite. Really easy to have a great time.
We finally got there about 18 months ago. This is a bummer because I’d have liked to go again
I too hope the others eventually reopen. They’re among my favorites as well

How about SLP or 50th and France? I don’t want to head into downtown MPLS that badly anymore lol.
Yesterday was the first time I’ve ventured into the City for as long as I can remember (maybe for the last Gopher game at Mariucci?) and it wasn’t for lunch or dinner at some shmancy fancy overpriced downtown restaurant! My wife’s name happened to come up to get the vaccine, to be administered at the Convention Center, and we didn’t want to miss out on the opportunity. Downtown was dead, parking no problem, all went well.I’ve now had both shots, but not without extreme risk, having to drive west on Hwy 7 in Minnetonka to get both. Made it, whew!

It’s another of Isaac Becker’s places. They opened not too long before the pandemic and do small plate types of things. We thought it was very good just like all his other restaurants.

For me, it was really only fun if you went with 6+ people for the restaurant/basement bar experience, which didn’t happen often. Dinner for two or something? Not quite that scene. I LOVED the place, for sure. Many good memories there (and for those old enough, their sister restaurant in Montrose, which changed hands many years ago).

Exactly right. This falls into the category of places that I hate to see close but I didn’t help matters by not going there very often. It was a great place for a group gathering (went there on my bachelor party) or group dinner.
Contrary to what some people might think, Gasthof’s is not related to Gasthaus Bavarian Hunter in Stillwater even though their names are so similar.

::Anyone else make it out to the River Inn in Hanover? My wife and I, along with another couple, had drinks and dinner there this past Thursday, and it was again well worth the rather long drive to get there. I had their BBQ ribs special, and my wife ordered a prime rib sandwich. The portions on each were huge, and in fact we each left with substantial amounts of leftovers that took us another two days to consume. One word of warning based on our first time out there: the place is packedon weekends. Arrive early or late. Bertogliat
