Why did we not use subs to slow the game down and chew the clock?

Hell of an accomplishment to get to the Western Conference Final without our best defender, and having to replace the MLS Goaltender of the Year.

Strengthen the squad in the offseason and get back at it.

Turned it over to the USMNT game and they’re up 5-0 in the 28’. El Salvador isn’t very good apparently. It’s the MLS team for the US tonight. No European players.

They’re not going to challenge for much this year but Arsenal won their 5th of 6 Prem League matches today. They’ve been doing it with the kids from their academy (Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe) leading the charge. Saka is turning into a star very quickly and it’s hard to believe he’s barely 19 years old.

The more I see of Mikel Arteta the more I think he’s the right guy to be managing this team. They’re still going to take a lot of lumps but he’s going to be a heck of a manager for a long time.

Barcelona and Lionel Messi are suing a Spanish media company over the leak of his 4 year contract he signed in 2017.

According to the contract if he hits all the add-ons he will have been paid $673 million dollars in the 4 years

He’s still very good but I wished he’d have left Spain a few years ago. Spain has always felt like a 2-3 quality team league to me compared to other European leagues

The US is playing its first qualifying match for the Olympics vs. Costa Rica. Just hit the post on a very obvious scoring opportunity. Have to win this to advance barring a lot of help in a very difficult Group A.

Yeah they might as well fire Jose…

Firing Poch was the worst thing they ever did. Took them to the Champions League final, and they fired him. I think they thought they were a bigger club than they really are when they did that. Could be years before they ever get a manager that good back in the door.

As far as the brand of football goes, watching Mourinho teams makes me want to claw my eyes out. Poch’s teams were always fun to watch. If Mou isn’t winning trophies, send him packing…

Especially when Poch may take PSG to the Finals again this year.

I’m surprised Mourinho keeps getting jobs at this point. His shelf life is 2-3 years wherever he goes. At least if Arsenal does something dumb and gets rid of Arteta (who I think is building something good at the Emirates) I shouldn’t have to worry about them ever hiring him.

That’s a bold statement considering their draw. Would have to beat Bayern and (likely) Man City just to get there. I like Chelsea’s draw a lot more!!! Keep The Blue Flag Flying High!!!

Fucking relegate them all in their domestic leagues for trying to pull that shit. Embarrassing.

FIFA came out and said they would consider not allowing players who participate in this to play for their national teams. And all the domestic leagues came out very strongly against this today with statements.

If FIFA and the leagues stick together and threaten harsh consequences, even expulsion, for these clubs, they might be able to stop it from happening. We can only hope…

I did think of the Nacho when I saw this. Somebody has to be the bottom of the league. Tottenham would fill that role perfectly. Just Western and Miami did.

I don’t think the leagues can ban the clubs joining this because of the massive impact it would have on all the other teams in those leagues.

That said if FIFA did decide to ban them from International Duty that might have some teeth, but I doubt they have the balls to do it

In other news, what was your favorite Jose Mourinho memory at Tottenham?

I feel like FIFA would do it, I hope they do. This whole thing is a direct attack on the European game, a bastardization of Continental competition.

My interest in European soccer will drastically go down if this ends up happening.

Germany clubs like Bayern and Dortmund have 50%+1 fan ownership, because they are in Germany I believe. The fans have a say, unlike in other places. PSG being owned by Qataris probably has something to do with their absence.

The logic would be that there is no threat of relegation out of the league, like there currently is with the CL. If you’re not good enough, you don’t get to be in the Champions League. This would shelter those clubs from that, which is complete and utter horseshit.

It would be like in college football if Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Notre Dame, USC, Texas, etc, etc, all just said “We’re just going to bypass the selection committee and just hold a playoff with all of us every year, regardless of how good or bad we are”

There would be riots if that happened…

Nailed it with PSG. One of their main owners also owns BeIN Sports, who has a contract with the Champions League in Europe, I believe. So the PSG owners have a financial stake in the CL. Were that not the case, they probably would have been the first ones banging the drum for this Super League, lol

What can the players actually do? Do they even have the option to refuse to play these games?

It is against Premier League bylaws to enter any competition without the approval of The FA. So, while they can not be banned from joinig this Super League, they can be kicked out of the Premier League. I can’t imagine any fan base accepting this whole thing.

Well, the course of action for a player in this case would be to go to his club and say, “I’m not going to play in these games, if you refuse to drop out of this league, I demand that you sell me to a team who is not in this league.” At the end of the day, the players hold the ultimate power in deciding whether they want to play. The clubs can’t force them to do anything. Assuming FIFA/UEFA keep that stance, and says that anyone who plays in a Super League game can never play for their national team again, that will have to be the choice of every player.

Guys like Aubamayang at Arsenal, who is from Gabon, never going to realistically win a World Cup, maybe he’s OK with it. But a guy like Paul Pogba at Manchester United, who is from France and still in his prime, I’d imagine he’d have a big problem with that. Hell, look at Christian Pulisic at Chelsea. He’d have to decide if he’s OK with never playing for the US National Team again.

The national teams are so important to a lot of these guys. If anything is going to kill this league, that will be it, IMO.

It’s really kind of a fascinating game of chicken that will be going on here.

The PL clubs are thinking “There’s no way they’ll ACTUALLY kick us out of the league”, and the PL is thinking “There’s no way they’ll go through with this if we kick them out of the league”.

                  First one to blink loses.

I completely understand that the national teams are really important to the players. But if they demand to be sold to another team, but their club doesn’t, do they have any recourse other than to stop playing entirely, other than for the national team games?

Of course, any player not already with one of the teams in question could just refuse to sign a contract there, so it kind of fixes itself in the long-term.

Certainly a huge mess all around.

I don’t think so, they would just be stuck not playing until their contract runs out.

But the club would have to be REALLY petty to let that happen. Like any sports league, the players are a commodity to them. They have a commodity which is about to provide no value to them, so they might as well sell it while someone will give them money for it, rather than just let it go for free. So at the end of the day, I think if the players flat out say “I won’t play for you”, the clubs will comply, and sell them.

Oh PSG and Bayern will be joining at some point, you can bet your butt on it. There are supposed to be 15 founding members and the three seats being warmed up are surely for Bayern, Dortmund, and PSG. All three were members of the old cartel dubbed the G-14.

Wouldn’t Bayern and Dortmund need the fans’ approval, because of the 51% rule? I don’t forsee any fan base voting for this.

I won’t claim to know the intricacies of their ownership/approval situation, but they won’t really be left with a choice if this goes through. While they are what I will dub very “proud” clubs, are they really going to sit on the sidelines of what will ultimately become the only top European competition? They definitely aren’t immune to the current financial issues that are plaguing the vast majority of football clubs. Not to mention, who is going to want to play for the noble German clubs on the outside that are not able to offer the amount of wages the Super League clubs can?

Personally, I’m still hoping this is some huge bluff, but it’s probably way beyond that now.

PSG is owned by the State of Qatar. Also owned by Qatar is beIN Sports that has the current TV rights to the Champions League. Along with Qatar hosting the 2022 World Cup, A PSG move to the Super League would really tick off UEFA, and FIFA. If it wasn’t for those two reasons, I’m sure they would have been the 13th team.

I missed what the City PR officer said before it kicked off, but Pep was able to spend a good 5-10 minutes questioning everything around it. Then they shut it down lol.

Most of the 12 teams have foreign ownership (American, Asian, Russian, Middle East). They really misread the room when it came to fan support. The possibility of no domestic league, or cup play, by breaking off to form the Super League would kill European soccer at it’s roots, and that is the basis of any supporter.

It was also the Super League’s basic assumption they could just up and start their own competition and still have their domestic games intact. Now that it’s not the case, there is little incentive for teams to breakaway.

That’s why German teams with the 50+1 ownership model didn’t even consider the SL. If they did, the fanbase would rather burn their stadium to the ground vs not having domestic games. Leipzig is one of a few exceptions to the 50+1 rule (owned by Red Bull) that I thought might find the SL beneficial and leave the Bundesliga.

I don’t think the PL has the power to kick them out, nor is it really in their best interest. How would the next television contract go without the largest clubs in it?

The players, managers, and fans are probably the only thing that can stop this now.

Jordan Henderson reportedly has arranged a meeting with the PL captains today. Will be interesting if the players come out united against this.

Klopp and Milner have already said something.

Sounds like some teams are already walking back their commitment.
