::I never said NTDP didn’t have good players come thru it. It’s often looked at as a sign of who is recruiting well. I was a bit surprised that not many NTDP alums are National Champions. Greg Carvel said he doesn’t even look at NTDP kids, could burn him, but looking at the last 10 years he could be right. To be fair I don’t think NTDP kids were looking at him either until the last 2-3 years.

If this were 2017 he would’ve been committed two years ago

Fair, but he found a way to land Makar, and Ferarro….

::Chris Peters is very impressed by Stramel: “He’s this massive human, but he can skate and has great soft-touch skills including a killer release. Then he’s impossible to move off the puck. The only time I’ve seen a player truly plant him was with a trip. There was one play where a German player attempted to hit him and bounced right off of Stramel, who barely moved. The Minnesota native still hasn’t picked his NCAA destination, but this guy is one of the most unique prospects I have seen come through the NTDP.”
Worth watch HockeyTV this month to get a glimpse.

::glenhogan21 wrote:Interesting that in last 6 NCAA championships teams I think only 3 total NTDP alums: Joey Anderson, Shane Gersich, Will Butcher. Michigan has historically recruited program best since in their backyard. Only championship team was 1998, which I think was mostly Canadian and not yet heavy on NTDP. Maybe loading up on those kids isn’t a good idea, as tempting as they are.
This assumes:
1. The best team is the one that wins the national championship
2. The issue with those teams is the relatively small percentage of NTDP players they have and not the majority of players that make up the rest of the roster.
I’d say both of those assumptions are rarely true.

I remember hearing someone say that Stramel would come in fall 2023. Does that mean he can’t commit until August 1st? How old is he?
To answer the question yes, unless he accelerates to be a senior in the fall before then.
Ah, so he hasn’t received any offers yet then…………..wink.
Kids gonna have a full voicemail on August 1st that’s for sure.

Sounds like Zam Plante has an invite to join the 04 group if he wants to make the move.

Clark got to play some USNTDP games at the end of the year — I don’t have any steam on it, but you’d think he’d have a spot waiting if he wanted one.
Can you share where you are reading the news about Plante’s invite? I’m not finding that info anywhere. I’m also now wondering how many times it has happened where someone joins the U18 team after not even receiving an invite to the U17 evaluation camp with their birth year.

Happened with 03 Andre Gasseau and 02 Zakary Karpa, plus 00 Jon Mor. Seems like an annual thing they’re doing at this point.

I’m always a sucker with a “road less traveled” story for a player to be noticed. I think it will be interesting to follow the development of goalie Carsen Musser from Sherburn.

Should be noted this is the first time the NTDP has brought in three goalies, or at least the first since I started following them.

I’m all about taking your time and talking it through with parents and whatnot, I think it’s the most prudent way to go about it, I’m just genuinely surprised. I figured Clark, Rinzel, Moore and Whitelaw would be off the table after August 1st or 2nd. BlueBandit24

::That was my assumption as well. If they were considering the gophers at all, I can see them being respectful and waiting a bit longer for their conversation with tBob as he handles an unbelievably tough situation. I’d take it as a good sign that we are in the running for a least a few of the players mentioned.

Im sure the coaches have a very good idea of who is committing, maybe they just are holding off on announcement.Last year was very different because some kids had committed prior to change. Who was our first commit last year? Brody Lamb in October?
The tragic circumstances relating to the car accident…has obviously pushed back any commitment announcements for the time being (which is very understandable). Offers have likely been made…but we probably won’t hear much on this front until early September. Just a horrible situation for the families of the two deceased young men…

::I’m not worried about that. Whitelaw always seemed like a Wisconsin player, he’s good but there are plenty of other top kids. Motzko and staff also very good at finding less heralded players. Lacombe was not a big name before he commuted. Oliver Moore, Jimmy Clark, and Gracyn Sawchyn all still in play. I don’t know much about Beckett Hendrickson, but he did make NTDP.

Shaugabay and Whitelaw are the only two “misses”. I’m not worried at all. The guys I believe we’re likely after (Clark, Moore) are still available plus we got Rinzel. Very confident in Bob.
Also not counting Plante and Hanson as misses because, well, obvious reasons.

I’m not sure Shaugabay is a miss. He hasn’t produced as well against top competition. Sounds like effort and details in game were big factor in not making NTDP. We have seen too many guys like that in past. I think Motzko is disciplined recruiting to the identify he wants.
I agree. I just didn’t wanna play the “we didn’t want him anyway” card.

To be fair, for much of that time Lucia was only recruiting kids who’s homes he could walk to in 15 minutes or less. Scott Bell started to change things at the end, but it was too late.

Right with you Cardinal Country Clomp… I think the key for Motzko is clearly finding the balance between landing the fancy Cadillacs and slightly used F-150s. This year’s incoming class has the fancy young 18-year-old players like Lucius, Knies and Broz. It’s also got a player who has patiently developed in Pitlick and someone who has had to battle a lot of adversity to get back to playing at a high level in Huglen. Boyton is the perfect type of goalie recruit as the top uncommitted 20-year-old USHL goalie to sign midyear.
As impressive as Michigan’s freshman and sophomore class is for this season, they are still going to be a roster dominated by younger players and that has rarely worked out to NCAA Titles. Now it’s a lot of fun to watch, but if someone can find the last team to have a roster like that and win it all… please let me know.
I was kind of doing a brief look at the Gophers roster this year to see how their average age compares to past rosters and their defensemen are still so young compared to the rest of college hockey, but at least they’re experienced. Their top D Johnson, LaCombe, Koster. Faber. Staudacher and Brinkman are still just going to be an average age of 20.5 years-old when puck drops in October. Keep in mind the oldest college hockey rosters are usually like 22-yr-olds and the youngest average are 20-yr-olds at the start of the season.
The forwards look like they going to be an average of around 21-year-olds in October — so things are getting a little more mature there.

Exactly. Michigan is built to win hockey games but not playoff games. With that much skill though they’re obviously more than capable of making a run. It will be interstate to see…
Can’t wait to see if they take too many TOs in the NCAA final game which will cost them a championship.
