I think the front loading of their contracts made this result impossible for the Wild.

No, but there’s a reason it was one year. Come early January he likely signs an extension in which he’ll get paid $1-2M a year. If things are going well, of course.

I’d argue Goli is better & will score more offensively this season & that Suter was decent defensively but starting to slip. But.. the bottom line… is BG didn’t want Suters entitled attitude & mouth in the Wild locker room & that’s why he’s gone…

Suter had 19 points in 56 games with roughly similar games played since 2014 and had 22 TOI last season – by far his lowest in more than a decade. Get over it regarding Suter. His best days are in the rear view mirror. He can still play, but he got points in earlier years because he was on the 1st PP unit. So was Koivu. That’s ain’t happening for Suter going forward in Dallas. Goli will see PP time for the Wild

Yeah but I think those days are long past for Ryan. Obviously anything can happen but these 2 look to be on similar trajectories and I’m not sure this season should reflect a dropoff in swapping these 2. Time will tell.

Russo suggested there might be a $2M extension happening for 2022-23 on Jan. 1, but that wouldn’t work cap wise for AAV to make official today. Goli could always sign somewhere else for more next year if it doesn’t seem like a good fit too.

Well, 2 of the 4 major sports just straight up don’t even have captains, right? Baseball and basketball? And in the NFL they have a bunch of different captains on different units of the team. So I think with hockey it’s much more of a distinctive honor than it is in football, and thus, newsworthy when it gets taken away. Bertogliat- Posts: 1402

No fans should give 2 poops outside of it may show some internal friction in cases like this.
For some teams the C is a hop on my back type leader (Grant Potulny), others it is experience and respect (Koivu), and on others it is top talent. None of this really should matter to fans. But boy do hockey fans seem to have opinions about it.

They should also be the leaders in the locker room.
A friend of mine who has worked at the X during Wild games since the beginning and knows a lot of the behind the scenes people told me one of the captains, Mikko I believe, once casually asked a valet driver if everyone everyone had been good to him and were good tippers. He then addressed those who were not tipping and told them to go make up for it.

It sounds like the NHL will be emphasizing the cross checking penalty this season. I have been hoping this would happen for a long time and can’t believe it has taken so long; in fact I went on a rant a few years ago on here regarding this. For all the effort that has gone into adding offense, making the D play somewhat honest in front of the net is a simple solution. It is too easy to cover someone if all it takes is turning them inside-out the second before the puck arrives. I also think it is will have a significant impact on player safety. All this assumes it actually changes and stays. I don’t have high hopes but it is easy enough to see/call. Karlsson- Posts: 1265

I’d say Buffalo’s GM. He has to win the trade of his best player and Buffalo isn’t afraid to fire anyone. Wilson has a chance to get out of a contract he likely regrets and he’s seemingly GM for life in San Jose no matter what moves he makes.
