It really sucks that such a great game basically got decided in the end by the OT coin toss.I was at the game in New Orleans when the Saints beat the Vikings in OT of the NFC Championship Game (the game that the Saints Bounty gate revolved around). The Saints winning the OT coin toss and wining with a first possession FG caused the NFL to change the rule to a first possession TD. Still a horrible rule. It burned the Vikings, the Falcons and now the Bills.
If KC kicks a FG BUF still gets a possession. KC running 2 plays from their own 25 with 13 seconds left and somehow getting into FG range was the major Buffalo fail, not whether they squibed it or not. All the second guessing gets ridiculous.
If KC fields a kick that has touched the ground, the clock runs & KC has 10 seconds rather than 13. Just saying kicking it out of the end zone made no sense when KC had 3 timeouts
And the ball is a live on a KO so you put it where it can’t be fair caught and it also doesn’t go out of bounds.
THAT art has all about disappeared. I don’t even recall last time I saw a coffin corner punt.

I would say give each team the ball in OT, but further back than the 25 yard line, as it is in college. This was one of those games where you knew the OT coin toss would decide the outcome.
College is as close to perfect as one can get for OT rules. I just ask that EACH team gets possession once.
1) the current college OT rule is a joke. They go to a 2pt conversion contest after 2 overtime periods
2) in your “each team gets possession once” overtime, say both teams drive down and score a TD as it seems most people believe would be the case. Then the game is still getting decided by a coin toss because whoever got the ball first would get it again and go score again.

If they pick up the ball and kneel it immediately no time runs off the clock. And they’d likely be getting better field position on a squib kick than a touchback.
Plus they run the risk of the ball taking a weird bounce and going out of bounds and giving up 15 more yards.
IIRC the Vikings lost a key game doing the squib kick instead of kicking it deep a couple years ago and Zimmer raged about how he told the special teams to kick it out of the endzone. Special teams coordinator decided to squib it and the other team went down and scored because they only had to go about 30 yards.

When it came to special teams…if Zimmer raged against it…then it had to be the correct play…lmao…but what you are referring to …..on a short field following a 15 yard penalty, I recall the Viking kicker trying to pouch it, but instead kicking it into the end zone

Bearpaw is correct. I don’t recall who the kicker was, but he put the ball out of the end zone, which gave Stafford and the Lions the ball at the 20 with something like 33 seconds and two timeouts to go down and kick a game winning field goal. The kicker was gone before the next game.

::I have heard a lot of people say in the last fews years that they were done with the NFL. Well, they missed a heck of a weekend of football. The NFL Gods even saved the best game for the last game last night. What a great game. Held my interest through the game, and the with reaction of people on social media, it did the same for them. Just a couple of thoughts. The KC play late in the game when Andy Reid tried to outsmart himself using the backup TE trying to run the option was stupid. This is not a game in October, and Mahomes needs to be the guy touching the ball there. On Buffalo side you can question the kickoff but the bottom line the best defense in the league gave up a FG to tie the game and a TD in OT. If I was a Buffalo fan, I would have been fairly confident that they would have held them to a minimum FG and would have given Allen a chance to get the ball to win the game in OT. The Chiefs better watch out because Burrow and Chase will carve them up because the defensive backs on the Chiefs are sieves. Beauner

It was this year against Arizona right before half that I was thinking of. The Vikings had just scored before half to take a 23-21 lead. We squib kicked it, Arizona picked it up and got it out to the 35, ran two plays for 20 yards and kicked a long FG as time expired. Instead of a 2 point lead at half we were down by one en route to losing by one.

::All this talk of how the Bills should have handled the kickoff…how ’bout asking the Number 1 defense to stop the other team with 13 seconds left in the game? 19 yards on the first play; 25 yards on the second. Total of 10 seconds burned off the clock.
The last time I saw that kind of defensive porosity was when Leslie Fraser was the Vikings’ coach.

30 yard cushion first play and letting Kelce wide open inside was pretty brutal.

He’s more likely to go to the Giants. Their new GM is Joe Schoen (formerly Assistant GM for the Bills), and they have interviewed both Frasier and Brian Daboll.

I mean I assume the reason he took it in BTC was because he doesn’t need the money immediately. If he holds onto that BTC for another year or two (or longer) it still could turn out to be a great deal for him.

48-of-62 (77.4%), 637 yards, 9 TD, 0 INT, 149.0 rating (10.3 YPA).

His 106.6 passer rating in the postseason is 2nd in #NFL history (only Patrick Mahomes is higher at 107.2).

I’ve lived through all 4 of the Vikings’ Super Bowl losses, but 2009 and New Orleans was the worst for me. I was so positive they were going to the Super Bowl, right up until that field goal went through the uprights. I was totally wiped after that one and sincerely felt ill from lack of sleep for a couple days. My condolences to The Rube. It’s like “Uggghhhhhhhh…”
It was setup perfectly this year for the Bills’ Vengeance Tour 2022:
NE: obvious reasons
KC: last year’s AFC Title game
TN (Memphis Miracle) or CIN (1988 AFC Championship)
And then possibly beating Brady in the SB.
That would have been a dream come true…
It would be fun for NE to keep improving with Mac/BillyB and have a real battle year in year out for the AFC East. Kind of like what we saw in the AFC North with Steelers, Ravens, and to a lesser extent Cincy in the last decade or in the NFC West. Those Bills with Allen are super fun to watch.

A 21-3 lead is a really nice lead but it’s not that safe when you only score 3 points the rest of game.
