Well here we are! After 19 years I have moved on from the phpBB forum software that we have always used. Yes it is different. Yes is it more basic that the previous software. But the old board was just barley hanging on and it was time for a change.

Yes I know that go to first unread post does not work here. It is my #1 priority to fix, but right now there is NOT a fix to change this. But I will keep my eyes open!

The key to this new board is that it is based on WordPress, which is what the rest of GPL has been on for about 5 years. So now as a registered user, you can not only use this forum… But you can also comment on articles written here. Comment on individual Podcasts. All that kind of stuff.

So please give it some time. Get familiar with the new forum and portal. Don’t just start asking questions about how everything works. Spend some time to figure it out yourself. But if you are really stuck, please ask in this thread. I will do my best to answer your questions.

 

Not sure how I am going to figure out the password thing. I think everyone is going to have to reset their password.

I closed the “Moving to new message board” thread. I thought it was best to use this new thread for issues people are having.

 

FYI… If you think you no longer have access to certain areas of the site. Just know that those areas ARE THERE. I just need to manually add each person’s access to those areas. (Like Private Eyes) And I just do not have that as a priority right now.

Seeing a lot of test that is like this???

It appears that the main import had issues with quoted text/posts from the old board. It didn’t know what to do with that code, so it assumed it was strike our comments. One of the issues of having a 19 year old message board. It will sort of make it’s way out as many new posts happen.

On the good news front:

After letting the system process the fact that I’ve marked all the topics as read and giving it time to accept that, when new posts are made, and I click on the envelope for the thread in question, it IS bringing me to the first unread post. 

Yes, the system is very laggy right now (as Jup explained, the system is still coming to grips with all this imported data) but that’s good to see happening.

Current post count is how many total post you have that is active. It no longer counts all those thousands of posts that were pruned over the years.

But I will get a page up that has a record of the top posters when I get the chance.

I just turned off caching for logged in users. This should help clean up the read/unread icons that were not refreshing after you read a topic. Though I think it is a good idea to go to the forum home page and “mark all topics read” button at the top to clean things out.

Interesting… There is a base setting in WordPress that used Gravitar. So if you have a Gravitar account and it is the same email address as you use on GPL, that will be used automatically. So you must have a Gravitar account!

SLOW…

This place will be slow for a few days. Just so many bots hitting it. People resetting their passwords. Uploading avatars. So many things needing to be cached. So please be patient. It will get better as time goes on.

Hey Jup – You may have mentioned this before but will there be thread pages within a topic. For instance I understand the new software doesn’t have a most recent post viewed functionality but for longer ones (Gopher Off-season with 440 replies) is there a way to have them condensed so have pages for less scrolling?

if not no biggie just curious.

Right now I have TOPICS set to 12 per page. This allows the portal page recent posts to not go on and on.

The REPLIES with the topic are set to 75 posts per page. I believe that is what it was set at on the old board.

 

Getting a lot of database Errors.

Probably due to the fact that the server CPU is normally at 0.5 to 2.5…. Right now it is at 24!

It will take me a while to figure out the “Golden” no ad thing… I have not even given anyone that status yet. It is over 250 people and I would need to add each person individually. So a very long process… But then I have to figure out how to NOT show ads to those people. I hope I can eventually figure that out. I am seeing the ads too.

My ask was definitely along the lines of something to think about after the rest of everything has stabilized.  Things do seem to be progressing nicely currently, getting a little more responsive, less weird page-loads, etc as the day goes on.

I just updated the php backend software from version 7.3 to 7.4… Yes geek stuff here, but I am hoping that this will speed things up a bit. I could not do it before since the old board didn’t support it. But this version should make WordPress run better. I do think that I will restart the server at some point this weekend. It has been a very long time since it had been restarted. (Sometime last year I think) So I hope that php and restarting will help speed this place up.

I saw the same thing Steve sees.  If you click on the link to the thread it doesn’t take you to the last unread, but if you click on the envelope it looks like it does.

I wonder if that’s why you haven’t seen a fix for this…because it’s already baked in

I do not have a Gravitar account but an old picture popped up for me as well. (I replaced it)  I think it was my avatar a long time ago but can’t remember…

So far I like the new site!  Way less quirks than you usually get with a massive switch such as this.

You are likely accidentally adding a cover photo. Click on my name here that brings you to my profile. You can see I have a wide cover photo, which is different from my profile photo. Gotta click the right one.

just fyi for both the cover photo and profile pic, the boxes to select/cancel are half off the screen (I’m in my iPhone).

I figured that was what happened when my silly graduation picture showed up.  Decided to switch back to my old GPL avatar though.

I’m guessing you already have this on your todo list, but if not, any chance we could get paginated recent threads on the portal page like the old site?  I haven’t been able to check GPL has frequently as I used to and had been using that feature often if there were a lot of active threads while I was off GPL.

Is it possible to add the arrow that lets you scroll to the top of the page?  Not that manually scrolling to the top of the page is tough but it was something I was used to using when I was through reading posts on a page.  Just curious.  The board is looking and working great though @Jup!

Adding in the pages with 75 posts (or whatever the count is currently, that’s just a detail) has definitely made a huge difference in performance, it seems, even on pages that only have a handful of posts.

 

A few little quirks still getting used to, but no real problems.  Great job with the rapid turnaround on a huge project, Jup.

Are there different links depending on the device being used, or does the software figure it out?

Also, I have the old GPL app link on my phone and iPad.  I tried editing it in the ‘favorites’ window to match the new portal page, but it doesn’t update the actual app.  Do we need a new one, or is there a step I’m missing?

Not quite sure what you mean with different links on different devices.

As for the App thing. It looks like you created a shortcut on your phone that took you straight to the Forum or Portal. So it looks like an app on your phone, but it is really a shortcut. You would want to setup a new shortcut since the location of those pages have changed. I do have some redirects in place, but it will work faster if all of you update your links for GPL to skip the redirection.

I also need to update the icon for the favorite shortcut too. Something I will do eventually.

Just 12 right now. It was 15 before, but that had pagination. I will see if there is a was to do pagination. But that will get done later.

Okay, dumb question – how can I change picture sizes? Anything I want to use is either too big or too small for the avatar or the background photo.  I am not tech savvy, is there a way to adjust so I can use the photos I want?!

I’m not sure what the ads are supposed to do.

I have them on the portal page under the poll and above the main page articles. And in some threads below the last post on a page and above the reply box

Also, the justification on mobile in the reply/message box is a bit wider than the the screen cutting off the right side of the message box and the emojis. It moves left and right as I type, but if I try to (on my iPhone) use my spacebar as a mouse doesn’t let me move the screen left or right  to see what’s being cut off.

At the bottom of reply / text window (just under the emojis) you can check a box that says “Notify me of follow-up replies via email”.  Not quite the same, but if you really want to know…

I am with you on the font in the message window. I messed with it a bit, but it seemed like a ton of code to make it the same as everything else. So I gave up.

So I set it up that only logged in users can see the Who Is Online module on the forum and portal page as well as the full list page located here:

I also did the same to the member list. It will not show up in the menu unless you are online. Even if someone were to get to that page it would not show more than the message about having to be a member to view.
