::Judas And The Black Messiah (HBO Max): Bill O’Neal infiltrates the Black Panther Party per FBI Agent Mitchell and J. Edgar Hoover. As Party Chairman Fred Hampton ascends, falling for a fellow revolutionary en route, a battle wages for O’Neal’s soul.
I was really into this for about 15 minutes, then the bluntness of a dull weapon kept hitting me over the head with the message/theme the movie was pushing, for the next 45 minutes. Pro-tip: sometimes, less is more. Just sayin’. Couldn’t finish it. It started to feel like total unabashed propaganda. If one wants to see what I mean, I’d recommend BlacKkKlansman instead, for comparison, which was an excellent movie.

Are you surprised? How often do these kinds of money grabs pan out, 1 in 20?
I’d say 50/50, but it’s either ALL THE AWESOME or HOLY
:censored: THAT SUCKED. No in-between. “Be Cool” was great. “Boondock Saints 2” was a steaming pile. That sort of range.ex_goldy

::I also wasted two hours watching coming 2 America. Impressive cast, Morgan Freeman, all of the original cast, Wesley Snipes (I thought he was in jail for cocaine?) It might be just what you want if you loved the first one and need closure. There shouldn’t be another one, this should kill it off. Slap Shot

Not me. After the first 10 minutes which were admittedly awkward, it found its stride and there was a fair share of decent laughs. Not an all timer for sure but we enjoyed it enough.

::I had some extended couch time yesterday due to a small medical procedure. I perused Netflix and landed on the Jeffrey Epstein documentary. It is four separate episodes of roughly an hour each. I watched it beginning to end. OMG, what a revealing piece of work it is. Whoever said, “money can’t buy everything”, was wrong. It bought that pedophile freedom. I sure hope Acosta gets what is coming to him. Stepping down as labor secretary is nothing. He deserves jail time. The Rube

Yeah, the Epstein thing was disturbing to say the least.

A woman struggles to find a way to live her life after the death of her husband and child.

::Fatale (Netflix Disc): After a one-night stand, a successful married man finds himself entangled in a cunning police detective’s latest investigation.
Mystery/noir/thriller. Formulaic. Could see the end coming a mile away. Wasted potential. Criminals seriously lack common sense in movies. Just sayin’. Thumbs down on this one, especially given the cast (not necessarily A-list, but a lot of recognizable actors).

I can’t even count how many mixtapes (and now CDs) over the years. The following is correct. There are a lot of rules.

The Last Blockbuster (Netflix streaming; which is kind of twisting the knife)
A documentary on the last remaining Blockbuster Video in Bend, Oregon.
Good documentary, on the rise and fall of Blockbuster, and how this store is surviving. Every interviewee said something that I also felt, growing up with the rental stores. I was not a Blockbuster guy myself, due to limits of what movies they carried: Title Wave (later Hollywood Video) didn’t put limits on director’s cut or what Title Wave called “Bad Bad Bad Bad Cinema” (Toxic Avenger series was probably the BEST plot/cinematography in that category
 ).I digress. For those old enough to remember the rental store experience, it’s nostalgia. For those young enough to have no REAL idea of what that was like, I do recommend. It is completely different nowadays with the streaming services. A small example: you might spend 60 minutes trying to select a movie that you’re going to spend 90-120 minutes watching. Return On Investment doesn’t seem right, does it?

They do have it split into 6 “acts” (roughly 45 minutes each) on the stream so you can pause it after however many acts. I had today and tomorrow off so I sat down and watched it in it’s entirety this morning.

I had extremely high hopes for it and they were exceeded.
To the point that I desperately hope that the studio lets him make parts 2 and 3 that he had intended to make.

::Spun (Netflix disc): A drug dealer introduces one of his customers, a ‘speed freak’, to the man who runs the meth lab. A crazy three-day adventure ensues.
Awesome cast, great story, extremely well done, the detail to the cut-scenes/images are amazing. And I’ll never watch this movie again. It’s the director’s cut of Requiem For A Dream “Lite.” Strap in for this one, it’s pretty intense in a bizarre sort of way. Besides the aforementioned Requiem, the only other movies I’ve seen that qualify for the same category are “Kids” and “Killer Joe.” Just sayin’.

::Justice League (Zack Snyder cut) (HBO Max): Take a 90 minute storyline.
Add 45 minutes of “ancient lamentation music”
Add 45 minutes of “dramatic orchestral music”
Fill the last hour with overly dramatic slo-mo scenes.
And then you have this bloated piece of garbage that everyone was waiting for. Sometimes less is more, folks. Just saying.

I’ve been watching it in chunks with my two cats, Stella and Zane. After each segment we have a discussion group. Stella has tended to agree with you so far, while Zane wants to wait until it’s finished and judge it as a whole…or maybe it’s just my antipsychotic medication isn’t working as well as I thought. Beauner

Hmm, no he’s not. “Bloated mess” is a pretty common description from anyone over the age of 16 who doesn’t live in their moms basement.
There’s a reason why the job position of Editor holds power in a film, it’s necessary and keeps a directors whim in check. In this case you had a director doing his own editing and a 4 HOUR slog was the result. That does not make a good movie, that makes a self-indulgent piece of crap.

I did say “the only person I’ve seen”. I hadn’t sought out movie reviewer opinions on it because they rarely have good things to say about superhero movies.
And for the record, none of the people I’ve seen raving about are under the age of 21 and most own their own house and their own kids. (At least of the ones I know personally, I’m assuming about the twitter accounts).
Was it longer than it needed to be? Probably. But he also made this with the expectation that his original plan for a trilogy was never going to come to fruition (though given the audience score is 95% on RottenTomatoes and had a count of 3005 positive to 184 negative reviews on Metacritic, I wouldn’t be totally shocked if DCU lets him do them after all).
He also made this movie before we had any real introduction to Momoa as Aquaman and Ezra as Barry. So he included parts of the film to give more vision to what HE had in mind rather than what we ended up with after the original Justice League. He also showed a ton more of Cyborg’s origin, which was IMO extremely important given his undeniable importance to the overall story – the original was basically “hey here’s a guy who is part computer and can do computery stuff” with no real background.
IMO, Batman was significantly better in the Snyder Cut than the original, Cyborg was infinitely better, the Flash was better. Wonder Woman and Superman were more or less the same. Steppenwolf was far more formidable. Plus there was an actual REASON for him to be on Earth, which the original did not have.
If you’re worried about the length of time, watch it in increments. That’s why they made 6 segments.

Fair enough. My own opinion is based on the original intention of this film. Until he had to leave this WAS to be a theater release. Even IF he had stayed with the project it was never going to be a 6 segment experience or even his dream of a trilogy. So this “cut” is unrealistic business-wise. He walked away with hours of rough film and this Snyder Cut is just an example of a director who thinks everything he touches is gold. It’s not. Film stories need to be told in a concise and clear manner. Not being able to edit your work shows ego and questionable judgement. What I DO like is the totally different “look” he intended, color and light made a much different feel and I liked that part. What I didn’t like was the stretchiiiiiiiiiiiing out of the story. Maybe the real issue is if superhero stories can still be effectively told on the big screen? Or, if the audience has become more sophisticated, which I think it has, a multi-episode format is now almost a requirement.

Unless you know something I don’t, the Justice League was intended to be a series a la MCU’s Avengers. DCU was originally planning to have individual hero movies (Superman, Batman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, IIRC there is a Flash movie coming next year) and then the team-ups with various Justice League characters like this one. Even the theatrical release teased the sequel before it got terrible reviews and they scrapped it.
The thing that the MCU has done so well in comparison is character development. Each character in the original Avengers movie had layers of backstory that was easy to see if you watched the rest. Really the only one that didn’t have in-depth backstop was Hawkeye, but he also got more backstory than Flash or Cyborg in the original Justice League release.

A director can be a complete a-hole. I don’t care. Can he direct a movie and make it entertaining? That’s all I care about.
In this case, Snyder fawned over himself way too much, and made a not good movie.

The King of the Monsters movie was better than I expected which I’m hoping will continue. They seem to be building a franchise but I’m not sure how far they can go without character development.
King of the Monsters was far better than I thought it would be. Part of why I’m excited for Godzilla vs Kong

I’m traditional Goijra guy, but some of the newer ones were rather entertaining. I feel like they’ve learned from their mistakes over time, and have improved a little with each new release. I am certain it will be fun. That’s all I ask. If it ends up being ZOMG? Bonus.

Also, why in the hell did I think “Step Brothers” was worth my time? Took about 10 minutes to realize I should have listened to my gut.
Step Brothers is an American treasure. Boats N Hoes should have won a Grammy.
I like a lot of dumb comedy. This was painful.
If you only made it 10 minutes, you didn’t get to any of the good parts. The Rube

::Re-watches: Blade 2 and Pitch Perfect (HBO Max):
Liked both these movies for different reasons. Entertaining, one was all action/bad-ass stuff (Ron Perlman AND Wes Snipes? Ok) or off the cuff silly.
Funny thing was, I hadn’t watched Blade before I saw Blade 2 (buddy convinced me to go see it in a theater, said I didn’t need to know Blade before seeing the sequel, and he was right). I actually didn’t really like Blade all that much, but the 2nd was good. Haven’t seen the 3rd.

::Boss Level. A retired military operative finds himself in a never-ending time loop on the day of his death. This looked like it might be a flop, but it was a no-nonsense, fun action flick that didn’t take itself too seriously but wasn’t campy and had a legit plot. Some big name actors too. Fun popcorn flick. gopherguy06

Call me Dragon, but I enjoyed it and watch bits of it when it is on television.

Re-watching “Godzilla” (2014), “Kong: Skull Island” (2017) and “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” (2019) before I view “Godzilla vs. Kong”
Having just finished Godzilla vs Kong, it’s not necessary for plot purposes. Unless you really want to re-watch them for entertainment. Then by all means go for it.Bigbeer
