Apparently no racing fans on here.

This weekend a promising young driver, Anthoine Hubert, died in a horrible accident at the legendary Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. He was racing in Formula 2 (the second level of open wheel racing), with a definite possible future in F1.

Today his childhood friend Charles Leclerc won his first F1 race in Ferrari’s first win of the season. Mercedes has been dominating the sport for years now, which is horrible for neutral fans. People all over the world love Ferrari, so despite the mixed emotions on the day it’s a good result for the sport.

If you’re looking to get into racing, Drive to Survive on Netflix was very well done in a way that shaped some things to be more dramatic for potential new fans of the sport.

As far as me, I support a fellow Dutchman with a similar last name. Go #VER.

He reverted to his form from a couple of years ago with his immature lunge down the inside at turn 1. It’s a shame he ruined Kimi’s race.

Seeing Gasly’s post race interview about Hubert was tough to watch.

It was the first time in over a year Verstappen didn’t finish top 5. But yes, boneheaded move. He’s still only 21, and I think he could end up one of the best drivers of all time as long as his car catches up to his pure skill. Verstappen vs. Leclerc will be an insane battle (Senna vs Prost levels) for more than a decade to come.

Oh there’s no doubt he has insane amounts of skill, and he’d been much better of late. This was his first boneheaded stunt since he decided to risk his race to keep Ocon lapped.

Nascar… I saw it was on with like 15 laps left. Like two hours later… and the race ends like that. No accountability and safety measures for the drivers. Hope Newman is okay. Really really scary crash…

Restrictor plate racing is the most dangerous of all the Nascar races. The guy getting pushed most likely will get turned. I thought Newmans car was going to explode with all the fuel coming out. Doesn’t sound good.

    This is really good news.

I stopped watching NASCAR many years ago but do they still promote this race as their “Super Bowl?” Between Dale dying on the track and what seems like a big accident at the end every single year, I can’t believe it’s something they’d want to promote that way.

I started working at Home Depot January 29th, 2001 and Tony Stewart was all I heard about. I had never watched much racing before, but I remember guys in HS always arguing about Ford vs Chevy and all the drivers, etc. Anyway, I decided to watch the 2001 Daytona 500. I watched the whole race and learned a ton and near the end of the race, I knew I would be a fan. Then Earnhardt’s crash happened and obviously that was a big deal and kept me glued to the races week after week. My fandom waned when Stewart was replaced by Logano and I pretty much stopped watching it after that. For some reason, this year’s Daytona 500 was one I wanted to watch. I caught some yesterday until the rain came and I watched some today while I had dinner with the wife and kids. I think there was about 4 laps left when I had to go to hockey practice so to come home and see another crash like this….I don’t know what to think.

I am glad he is going to be ok though.

That, and I’m pretty sure they’re trained that the best thing is to keep your line and not hit the brakes to not create a bigger cluster with other cars around you. Usually works, but there’s always exceptions. Any driver in that particular spot is screwed.

That’s my understanding as well. A minor adjustment in the line you’re following if it will get you around something is good, but in a large pack, any sudden large adjustment will just lead to an even larger incident, and you’ll still likely hit the other car anyway, just because of the speeds.

F1 pre season testing starts tomorrow. This is when it looks like Mercedes won’t dominate the whole year but then the first race comes and they remove the sandbags. Really hope for a competitive championship this year. Go VER and AMRBR.

Drive to Survive season 2 premieres on Netflix on 2/28. This series has had the biggest impact in growing F1 in America in the last many years, and I expect viewership to go up again for season 2.

Fantastic to see Ryan Newman with his kids.

Tourist Trophy motorcyle races on the Isle of Man are my motorsports addiction. Races are held on public roads after commuters have used them in the morning drive.

The mountain course is like 17 miles in length. Racers leave the gate at one minute intervals. Crazy video with filming done from a chopper and ground speeds well over 150 MPH.

On my bucket list of where I’d love to travel to.

Ryan Newman was released from the hospital today…holding his daughter’s hands as he walked out…without shoes on. They probably told him he was released and he got dressed, grabbed his daughter’s hands, and George Jefferson’d the hell out of that hospital!

NASCAR safety has come a long way. Unfortunately, it took losing one of the biggest stars, Dale Earnhardt Sr., in the history of NASCAR for safety improvements to happen. Minor changes happened after Kenny Irwin and Adam Petty, but when Dale died the industry stood up and took notice of changes that needed to be made and made safety a priority. Like Karlsson said though, Simpson had always been at the forefront of safety in all forms of racing.

I watched recently a replay of Dale Sr’s fatal crash and I couldn’t believe it. Compared to some NASCAR crashes that I’ve seen on TV (clips..I don’t really have any interest in NASCAR) it seemed so minor. I mean the car hit the wall hard but you see some of those vehicles get tossed all over the place like a dog with a chew toy.

Glad to hear Newman is ok.

I have always said that as well about Sr’s crash. I remember my wife and I watched the race at a friend’s house and we left right after the race and had to drive back to where we lived which was about a hour and a half drive. When I got home my phone was ringing…didn’t have a cellphone in 2001…it was my mom telling me that Dale had died in that wreck. My wife and I couldn’t believe it. I was a huge NASCAR fan at the time and Dale was my driver, so it sucked…big time.

He did hit the wall dead on going 200 mph. He wasn’t wearing that HANS device for his neck and it probably just snapped. Doesn’t take a whole lot at that speed to do that.

And he had an open face helmet and he ate the steering wheel. Like I said above, NASCAR made many necessary safety changes most notably the HANS device after that wreck.

When I went out for the CC series I rented a fun car and got to Pikes Peak at least an hour before they opened so I could be first in line. Let’s just say I didn’t obey the speed limit since there were no cars in front of me, and it was so much fun. I can see the appeal of the racing there. If you mess up there, it’s all on you which is, I guess… better in a way.

It was actually not too bad to watch. There were too many cautions, as some of the drivers were not too used to sim racing. It was a good to waste a couple of hours on this. Hope they do another one.

One week (four work days) until F1 is back!

I’m super excited because racing is a sport that is less impacted by the fans. When you’re in the car you can only focus on the race. So it should be the typical quality of entertainment. Plus, this will be Red Bull’s best chance for a championship in years given the shortened schedule and two races in Austria to start the season.

    Can’t wait.

Mercedes’ DAS system is ruled legal. Welp, probably going to be another year of domination. Six years in a row before this one. Hamilton would tie Schumacher with seven.

Welp, Verstappen retires with an engine problem. With a shortened season and as the only potential threat to Mercedes, that means it’ll be another title for them.

EDIT: Holy shit the end of the race was insane.

Having watched both the F1 race and the Indy race (from Indy) I have to say, the halo is 100x better looking than the wind screen. Yuck.

An F1 driver tested positive. Ugh. They are supposed to be in a tight bubble.

F1 is a sport little impacted from a TV perspective with no fans (and no stupid fake fan noise). I’ve been enjoying having it back despite typical MB domination. Hope this stays isolated.

    UPDATE:

Perez’s replacement will be Hulkenberg, who holds the record for most starts without a podium (177), and suddenly finds himself in a car with a VERY good chance at a podium. Would be an amazing story.

Hulk’s a good choice, but I was hoping for someone else.

I hope no prospective F1 fan watched the Spanish GP today because wow was that one of the most boring races ever.

It will be turn 1 with the help of DRS. That’s about it. Still an amazing track.

I felt bad for Bottas. He made advantages for himself every time he was allowed any control, only to have them taken away by factors outside his control.

He got past Hamilton on the start and got to control the safety car restart, only for the race to be red flagged. Then he demanded trying the undercut and different tires only to have Hamilton pit shortly thereafter and put on the same tires.

Credit to Hamilton, he’s the best driver in the world and he’s in the best car in the world. The combination just makes for boring racing unless he suffers misfortune.

Verstappen is the best driver in the world. ;) If Verstappen is 10.0 at driving and 8.0 with consistency, Hamilton is 9.8-9.9 with driving and 9.8-9.9 with consistency driving in the most advanced F1 car ever made.

Bottas makes too many small mistakes that add up. That’s why Mercedes keeps him every year. He’s the perfect #2 driver.

What a spectacular crash. Sounds like he only has minor burns on his hands and feet.

Burns on his hands and feet and possible broken ribs.

AND he admits, from his hospital bed, that his resistance to the halo was probably not great in hindsight.

Pietro Fittipaldi in for Grosjean at Haas

    Hamilton out with the Covid

Russell from Williams to Mercedes to substitute for Hamilton

Jack Aitken up from F2 to sub for Russell at Williams

Mick Schumacher confirmed at Haas for 2021

The race this week is using a different layout of the Bahrain circuit. ( https://i.imgur.com/jwVEpz4.jpg” class=”bbcode_url”>https://i.imgur.com/jwVEpz4.jpg ) Long straights leading into low-speed corners could result in plenty of overtaking… and with two rookies and a newbie in the best car could add up to a race worth watching.

Oh, and the best news is Grosjean is out of the hospital!

Russell P2, <.03 seconds behind Bottas in his first weekend in the car. In my mind this proves two things. 1) the Mercedes is an amazing car (we knew that already) and 2) There are no slow drivers in F1.

What a race. Russell with his first career points. Robbed of a win, possibly twice. (and he still might lose those points pending investigation due to the team screwing up his pit stop)

Perez with his first win in what might well be his second to last race.

Ocon in second after having sat out a season just a year ago.

EDIT: Stewards have let Russell keep his points, but fined Mercedes 20K euros or pounds or whatever for putting Bottas’ front tires on Russell’s car during the second pit stop.

Any dirt bikers on here? Never rode one as a kid. Took it up after street riding for 20+ years. Midlife crisis? I typically go to the Black Hills in the Spring and Fall. It is amazing! I’d like to ride more often closer to home. Let me know if interested in doing that. I’d also like to hear where you’ve gone and what you think.
