I like Phil, he’s fun and he is who he is. We all want personality in our athlete’s, unless we don’t like the particular personality. 😆

Casey Mittelstadt scratched for 2nd time in 3 games. There are rumblings out of Buffalo that he may be sent to the AHL if things don’t change soon. He has 2 points in his last 21 games.

It’s tough because the Gophers need an offensive star representing in the NHL to replace aging Kessel and Wheeler and he was supposed to be it.

He’s not a physical, tough player. In that way he reminds me of Jordan Schroeder, another former Gopher who played a little soft for the NHL. Unless you have the skill set of a guy like Johnny Gaudreau, if you’re an undersized player it’s a freaking meat grinder of a league.

I don’t think JS is a fair comparison, he’s 5’9” (generously) while CM is 6’1” & 200lbs. CM has a way superior skill set compared to JS too. CM is struggling in his 2nd full year in the NHL. It happens. But keep in mind, CM is exactly the same age as Gophers freshman Ben Meyers ☝️

I was just thinking what the Gophers team would look like if Casey was still on campus. They’d probably be scoring another goal a game and have had a good chance to win those 13 games that they were tied in the third or leading in the third.

With him finally hitting his stride the last two series of his freshman year, he would have had a good soph season and left last summer anyways.

CM never liked to play defense. Watching him in high school he floated around waiting for his team to gain possession. Great offensive skillset but not at the NHL level evidently.

What would it look like if we still had Lindgren, Pitlick, and Robson? They would have all been seniors this year had they stayed right?

BTW I do think Pitlick was ready to move on to being a professional. He had a pretty nice year as a junior and Nashville is doing the right thing by playing him in the AHL as well. I think they would have done that with him even if he had stayed for another year at Minnesota. Just seems like his game, physical and mental makeup were ready for a next step.

Lindgren… as soon as he was traded to the NYR he was excited at the chance to prove himself and find a spot in their lineup. Lindgren gave up the chance to grow his offensive game a bit more as he was just getting some chances on the pp at the end of 17-18. He’s gotten his chance in the NHL, earned a letter with Hartford and maybe he was never going to be a top four type guy anyway… BUT he gave up the chances to be a top guy by being pegged a defensive specialist as the USNTDP and then leaving Minnesota before he got the chance to be counted on as the top pair guy instead of the defensive match-up guy.

Hard to fault a goalie who sees a chance to get time in the AHL playing. Only so many chances to play professionally and hard to predict what happens the next year for opportunities.

Casey… ugh… the NHL is not a developmental league and he’s in the spot where he needs more time to develop. He had trouble learning at Minnesota. Sounds like it’s continued at the next level. Best of luck to him.

C’mon GS…what does the style he played as a HS player have to do with being an NHL player who just turned 21 years old and what he’s tasked to do now? He will be fine down the road, he’s experiencing a bump in the road, as many 2nd year players do. For Gods sake, it’s only been the last 20 games where Erik Ek has done anything for the Wild, and he’s damn near 2 years older than CM ☝️

CM is the weakest 6’1″ 200# I’ve ever seen. Worse, he has no nasty whatsoever in his game. Some of that is that he’s still a young player, but he was not ready for the physical challenges of the NHL. The Schroeder comparison isn’t so much physical stature but more the way they approach the physical part of the game (although admittedly I do often think of CM as being a more diminutive player).

Casey needs top 6 line minutes & PP minutes to try to get his mojo back. Other MN 1998 birth years in AHL (currently) include Joey Anderson & Riley Tufte & Keiffer Bellows. Playing regular shift NHL isn’t easy at 21 years old (despite what the esteemed hockey expert & Illinois Chicago Circle alum, Thirty-Four thinks) 😉. The only MN 1998 playing NHL currently is Ryan Lindgren☝️

We’ll he did play for juggernaut UICC in the 1970’s. I was in Wessman arena as a PeeWee when UICC got beat by the UW-Superior Yellowjackets. :biggrin2: I guess that makes him a supreme hockey expert regarding players who just turned 21

Sometimes you just don’t like a player. I didn’t like him here and he’s spent two off seasons not doing much (or he’s incapable of gaining strength) to build his body for the NHL. Add to this I enjoy being right. I’ve read your posts for 14 years, you can talk sh!t with the best of us, you get it just fine.

Not liking a player is one thing Relishing when they struggle is another, The jury is far from in on Casey’s NHL career. I had lunch with my youngest son yesterday, he’s a senior at the U and played on a summer hockey team with Casey at age 14. He said he has no doubt Casey will have a successful NHL career in the long run. He said the same thing about Joey Anderson. Of course he actually was on the ice with both of them growing up & knows their character & drive to succeed as hockey players, I’ll trust his opinion over 34’s. 100 times out of 100.. that ultimately 34’s take on Casey will be proven WRONG. But…we will see…that will be determined by Casey.

That was my point too. I couldn’t care less what anyone predicted would happen to CM after he left. I myself wasn’t happy he left and thought he made the move too early. But CM wasn’t the first and won’t be the last so let it go.

ffs this additional argument is even more petty than I thought – that someone would rather see a player (who by all rights seems like a decent kid) fail just so they can claim their prediction was right?

                                Whatever.

We’ll he did play for juggernaut UICC in the 1970’s. I was in Wessman arena as a PeeWee when UICC got beat by the UW-Superior Yellowjackets. :biggrin2: I guess that makes him a supreme hockey expert regarding players who just turned 21

LOL..”regularly personally attack” I tease you about UICC because they did lose to a DIII team. But in reality UWS was exceptionally good in the 1970’s with plenty of top Canadian players, many of whom befriended us as PeeWees & Bantams & played golf with us at Nemadji GC. I also congratulated you when the Blues won the Cup last June…guess you forgot about that 😲 Grow some thicker skin dude…

I think Casey is a little overwhelmed right now. He looks defeated in that interview.

He went into the NHL as a very young and underdeveloped player, he has no nasty in his game at all, he’s not a chippy guy who gets under the skin of his opponent….he’s a skill guy and a shifty skater without the other attributes of a good NHL player.

I think he has a chance to come back and be a good NHL player, but he really needs to add some of these other assets to his game.

Justin Holl was just on NHL Now on NHL Network. EJ Hradek said he was a Mn kid from Edina. Justin corrected him and said Tonka Bay, and said kids from Edina are cake eaters. For someone who had a pretty uneventful career at the U ( other than .6) , he has turned out to be a solid pro. He is averaging about 17 minutes per game as of late, has 10 points and is a +9, which is tops on Toronto.

You could tell almost immediately as he skated off the ice with his right arm hanging that he’d dislocated his shoulder (which also tears the labrum in your shoulder). It’s a awful feeling that unfortunately I’ve experienced first hand 🤬

I was looking to see if Sheehy made the lineup for the Iowa Wild today, but he’s not in there. Pretty solid first half with Allen though to lead the league in scoring. Sheehy has proven he can put up points when healthy. Might have to catch some more AHL games this year. He’s one of those guys who can consistently be dangerous shooting the puck, although you wonder if he’ll be like a Ryan Potulny.

This is what makes sports great. A team player as a Gopher and obviously the talent and work ethic to make it to the NHL. Love to see another Gopher getting solid ice time at the highest level. Feel like the Gophers are nicely represented in the NHL on the Blue Line right now. Not that it matters but good to see the Maroon and Gold having success at the next level.

Ryan Lindgren with a hard hit to an Avs player. Kadri then steps in and takes him to the wood shed. Tough to tell where the point of contact was, but he has a hearing with player safety today. No penalty was called on the play for the hit. Also, he did not return after the fight, so he could be injured because of the fight.

Avalanche penalty leader Kadri was throwing punches before Lindgren had his gloves off. How long would the fight have gone on if the linesmen hadn’t stepped in? Kadri could have thrown half as many punches and made the same point. He should be having a hearing too.

That’s a tough one, and I’m seeing both sides of it. It was mostly legal (a little high), but he didn’t need to hit that hard on a player with his head down to make an effective play, which is to separate the player from the puck. If he lets up just a little, he still gets in a punishing hit and the job is done.

I remember the Scott Steven’s hit on Eric Lindros – he was almost unconscious before he hit the ice. Some hard cores will say, “…well, keep your head up then….” or “…that’s the way the game is played….” Others will tell you it’s sharking. The league is wise to it, as is the NFL, and that’s why we’re seeing rules about vulnerable or unsuspecting players.

I’d say the players handled it the way they’re accustomed, and Lindgren by now has figured out he’s not playing for the U anymore. :)

We’ll see if the league fines Lindgren, but I doubt they will. Whatever they decide will pretty much give you an idea about how they interpret the hit.

Is it that easy to ascertain that Lindgren in the moment (given the situation and his actual visibility of what’s transpiring) needed to let up? Regardless I’m not sure the reaction was warranted. One of the reasons I prefer the college game is that such a hit would likely garner a strong response (right or wrong depending upon whose ox is being gored) without dropping gloves.

Not passing judgement either way, Ryan plays a hard nosed style, has since he joined the Gophers and dropped gloves with the Sioux Captain (as a freshman)☝️In today’s NHL, if you lower the boom, especially on a skilled player, you’re more than likely gonna have to drop the gloves (too).
