::Danny Irmen–you are one of my favorite all-time Gophers, but this has got to be one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a long time. What was the team thinking???

I was just talking about that with some co-workers this morning, good for him. Here’s a question that I can’t remember discussing here on GPL…how much better of a player would Ness have been if Guentzel would have been his defensive coach? My bet is a lot.
I think if you look at Ben Marshall you can see the difference. I know they were not the same player, but they were very similar. Smaller defenseman who could move the puck and quarterback a strong powerplay. Ness just didn’t live up to all the hype and apparently really hated Hill. Good for him that he’s getting a chance in the pros.

Ness didn’t do himself any favors by finishing high school early and coming to the Gophers right out of high school. As a freshman at the University he was the same age as a senior in high school. He would have been much better off either staying in high school, going to Penticton or playing a season or two in the USHL.
I just don’t think he was physically or mentally ready to step in and be successful with the Gophers under those circumstances. Add to that the amount of hype accompanying his arrival. Some people were expecting the second coming of Mike Crowley. He was never anywhere near Mike Crowley and having Hill or Guentzel as a coach wouldn’t have changed that fact. Ness was never going to be that good. He had one of the worst shots I can remember for a D-1 player to boot.
Hindsight is always 20-20, and in Ness’ case, I don’t think having Hill or Guentzel as his coach played nearly as big a part as the bad decision he made to come in early.
I also think it’s well past the time to bash Hill. He was just the wrong guy here at the wrong time. Turn the page.

::I don’t think you or anyone can deny how abysmal the defense was while Hill was at the helm, sorry for dragging up an old subject and I’m not bashing Hill as much as stating how I saw things while he was here. As for Ness I will definitely agree that coming in early out of high school without the experience of juniors under his belt hurt his development. I have heard stories of how dominant he was in high school and I just didn’t see it when he arrived to play for the Gophers. Like you said hind sight is 20/20 and Ness could have done things a million different ways that he did…hell does any recruit ever really do things the right way?

Martin-Johnson
Goligoski-Byfuglien
Niskanen
(Leddy)
(McBain)
(Hillen)
(Ballard)Stalock

(Frazee)I think they could beat Norway, Latvia, and Slovenia pretty consistently… closer to par with Austria and Switzerland.

::Looks like Minnesota Hockey released their own dream team. They were smart enough to include Ryan Carter (not sure how I missed him). However, they missed Bochenski, so I feel a little vindicated.
Here’s their team:
Parise – Backes – Oshie
Byfuglien – Stepan – Wheeler
Nelson – Cullen – Okposo
Carter – Hendricks – JT Brown
Gardiner (moved up like Big Buff)
Bjugstad
Eaves
Jackman
Morin
Pitlick
Lee
Kristo

McDonagh – Johnson
Leddy – Braun
Goligoski – Niskanen

Good for Kessel at 80!
Quite a drop off from Vanek down to Bjugstad, what a slacker… :biggrin2:Bonin21
