Goal and 3 assists
Edit: make that 2 goals 3 assists aftet the empty nettet…wow
Most impressive today by Vanek is how he assisted on goals. Not just a cute pass here and there but some gritty offensive zone play and breakaway that left a juicy rebound and a dazed goalie for an easy follow up goal.

He’s a unique talent even among NHL players. The numbers he’s put up in Buffalo over his career are all the more impressive considering he hasn’t been the benefactor of similarly gifted offensive linemates.

But Whioux sports claim he’s only a 3rd line player :confused2:

Along with 2 apples tonight, as well. He’s having a great start to the year!

You weren’t hearing things. The TV guy did say he had 3+3=6 but corrected himself later.
Still that was a heck of a game. Buffalo jumping out to the 1-0 lead, then three straight goals by Boston, then Buffalo roars back due to stupid penalties… Made better by the fact that I dislike Boston and like Vanek and Leo (and Buffalo by extension).

btw, best source for tracking Minnesotans/Gophers/WCHA/NCAAers the pros?
On the Gopher Sports site there is a blog that posts highlights and statistics. They will be posting on a weekly basis information on all former Gopher hockey players and the various leagues they play in (NHL,AHL,ECHL,CHL and Europe/others). Up to date statistics too. Very nice.

Who says the Gopher program doesn’t produce professional hockey players? Saver….I’m looking at you. :club:

Thanks. Surprised Taffe hasn’t been up yet, but it seems to be an annual grind for him.

What’s the deal with Taffe? When he was a Gopher I thought he had everything going for him. Really surprised he hasn’t been more successful.
Taffe was always moving on his skates and had great hands. I think he lacks a little flat out speed and size. If he had either one or the other, I think he’d be more of an impact player. He’s a bubble player but seems to be making a career of it.

Vanek, Martin, Ballard, Goligoski, Leddy, Bickel and the list goes on and on.
Well yeah, but those guys would have been good regardless of where they went, or whatever it is they say. :blahblah:
(Probably true for Vanek)

2-4 years ago a lot of people would look at that list and say they left early because they weren’t developing here.

Probably true for just about any NHL player in my opinion.
Exactly. My take on this is that an NHL caliber player is going to develop no matter where he is. If you want to talk about player development, look at the entire lineup, not just the top players. Aside from maybe 1 or 2 players on our squad this year (not naming anyone) I would say they have all improved noticeably during their time at the U.

::Yesterday’s Sabres-Penguins game was a regular Gopher hockey reunion. Four Gophers in attendance and each one of them played on National Championship winning teams. Pretty good game with Vanek scoring for the Sabres and Paul Martin getting the game winner for the Penguins.

Joe MichelettiIt was funny listening to Joe interview Brooks Orpick about having been named after Herb Brooks. Orpick talked about what it was like to meet Herbie and what a highlight that was for him. I was hoping Joe would have added something about having “met” Herbie too, but unfortunately it didn’t happen.

So, not only is he irresponsible but he’s also not smart enough just to write a check to keep this thing out of the courts and from the public eye….that has UND written all over it.

::Quote of the day on NHL.com
Geico Quote of the Day
You don’t score goals in this League unless you have that competitive edge. That’s just white noise when people talk about him not being competitive. He’s never going to be a player that is going to run guys over or put guys through the glass, but he gets in there and he’s pretty strong when he gets in battles.
— James van Riemsdyk on Leafs teammate Phil Kessel, whose two goals lifted Toronto to a 4-3 win over the Rangers on MondayGood news is the Wild/’Hawks are the lead of the day. The bad news is they have two No Names in the picture.

Drew LeBlanc is debuting with the Blackhawks tonight.
He’s had a hell of a month or so. Frozen Four, Hobey, and now he gets to suit up with the likes of Toews, Kane, Hossa, etc.
Not bah, eh? He’s actually on a line with Kane (1.24 ppg) and Sharp (0.69 ppg), so he has a very good chance of tallying a point tonight.

Couple of other notable former Gophers this year.
Vanek ended up with 20 goals and 21 assists for 41 points in 38 games.
Wheeler had 19 goals and 22 assists for 41 points in 48 games.I can do a little elaboration on that.

P.S. I still don’t know if WCHA Minnesotans means they have to be former WCHA players from Minnesota or what we were going for here…
At least when I was in charge of this thread everyone knew the parameters. They may not have liked all those included, but they knew to expect them. :biggrin2:

::Update on Schmidt:
He’s played 3 games for Caps since being called up and is a -2 with 7 SOG. He played over 20 minutes last night so he seems to be gaining the trust of the Caps coaching staff. I asked a few Caps fans on the HFBoards to comment on his play so far and here’s what they had to say.
“He’s been good, he’s using his skating and vision to make some pretty good pinches. No egregious defensive mistakes.”
“He played 20 minutes, I think, because there was a lot of 4 on 4 early in that game and he gets primary ice time in that it seems. He is on the 3rd pair and under normal conditions would not have played quite that much but I think he looks like a real good player coming”
Pretty positive reviews from a fan base that is pretty upset with most of their team this year.

Made one “mistake” that might have prevented a goal but overall thought he was solid. Better than a few of the Wild defenders we’ve been watching.
