Per Junkyard Brewing’s post today on FB:

Aaron did an interview today with @wdaytv news about the new liquor bill that just passed in Minnesota. 🚨Spoiler Alert 🚨 We have mixed feelings about the new law that allows MN breweries to sell 12oz and 16oz cans. First of all, those sales would be highly restricted. The new law restricts 12oz and 16oz sales to 128oz per person per day. That’s only two 4-packs of pounders! (But at the same time, you could go to a liquor store and buy our beer by the case if you wanted). Additionally, our reading of the law suggests that if a brewery wants to take advantage of this new license, they legally need to offer those beers to a distributor as well. (Self distribution doesn’t count). We’ll have to wait and see how this plays out in terms of enforcement and interpretation, but for now we’ve got concerns about the new law. The good news is that our licensing for crowlers hasn’t changed, so you can still take home as many crowlers as you would like!

My note: that is great news on the crowlers, if correct. Otherwise, goodbye to muling for others.

IMO, they put those fine print limits in to appease the opponents of the “Free The Four Pack” law, as it is known. The ones that think people will become raging drunks if the law was passed. Also, yes, the distro companies and liquor stores.

The limit is what it is, MN is slow to change and it’ll probably get raised eventually. Penalizing breweries that self-distribute benefits only distributors and is simply legislators appeasing their donors and nothing more.

The way I read it, the self-distro can still sell 4- and 6- at will. However, I may have misinterpreted.

I’m going to tread lightly here.

There are groups that would prefer to have control/oversight for it to pass. That stance held up the card games here, and now it’s holding up sports betting. That is all I care to say about that.

Aaron is saying there’s a clause that breweries can only sell out the door any beer that they have also offered to a distributor. Unless they can figure out a way to consider themselves a distributor, a self-distributed brewery still wouldn’t be able to sell 4 or 6 packs. That’s just petty BS by distributors using their power to work that clause in if that’s the way it ends up being interpreted and enforced.

Gotcha, so I misread a self-distro brewery cannot be exempt from the distro part. Thank you. :)

Like he said, we’ll see how that is interpreted and enforced but if that’s the case it’s just powerful distributors trying to force a small business to work thru so them so they still get their piece. Self-distribution has always been a little dicey as it works outside of the three-tier system with the self-distributing brewery being 2 tiers which isn’t necessarily legal but that’s for lawyers and judges to decide. A lot of breweries like Surly started out self-distributing to get a foothold. At some point you grow enough that you have to decide if you want to run a brewery or a trucking company. That’s where a distributor comes in and they serve their purpose which is usually their own benefit.

I went to CBC at the convention center a couple weeks ago and there was a whole presentation that was basically a “How to Deal with F-ing Distributors” class and one of the first things they did was ask the large and full room “are there any distributors here” and since there was they had to temper the tone of their answers. It was pretty funny as I’ve been on both sides.

I think I’m very wrong in this now, but I thought if you produced (x) or less amount of barrels, you didn’t HAVE to go through a distributor in MN. It was self-distro. Did you really have to set up a “separate” company? Junkyard and LTD USED to self-distro, and Barrel Theory does self-distro (as we all understand it…)

I don’t think you have set up a separate company. It’s all how lawyers interpreted how the law is written to allow it to be done and lawyers are good at that. As far as I know there’s not a cap for self-distribution but at some point as a company you have do decide how many trucks and employees do you want to take on. I think Surly had 3 drivers and trucks when they decided to go to a distributor and that was before they built the new brewery. Distribution is all about maximizing each truck run. That’s why distributors will carry soda or wine or whatever just to make sure all the trucks are full. I believe Indeed had more than that before they just went to a distributor last month.

I think Junkyard is still self-distributed. Blackstack and Modist are also. Drekker used to be but I think they have fully went with MegaBeer in the last 4-6 months. I’m sure there’s are others, I don’t know how every brewery gets their beer to market there’s too many.

Gotcha. I guess it’s a balance of employees/efficiency/cost/etc. For some, it made sense. For others, not so much. Will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

Stopped at Back Channel to buy their collab they did with Drekker.  It’s an imperial stout that they barrel aged 3 different ways.  Each beer reflects one of the barrels.

We cracked open the rum barrel aged one tonight and oh boy is it good.  Reminds me of Rum King in its heyday about 9-10 years ago except this is just a bit more sweet from the barrel.  I’m definitely looking forward to the other two.

Also stopped by Top Ten in SLP because Untappd said they had a BA version of Untitled Art’s Double Fudge Brownie Stout.  My wife had tried probably 8 or 9 of their pastry stouts in the last 6 months and the Brownie was my favorite.  I’m looking forward to cracking one of those soon

              1. BC’s bottles. The members get 1 each of the bottles as their membership, I am pumped. However, by a razor’s edge, I preferred the bourbon barrel over the rum, which surprised all that know me. I was surprised myself.
              2. The UA Brownie? That is one SICK beer. One and done, due to sweetness, but DAMN, it’s *ing good.

              2. As for memberships, for the stout/Sub Rosa club, they have asked current members to ask others interested, to email the brewery, and that’s IF they expand. IF they expand, I will let you know and tell you to contact them. AFAIK, new membership has not been open to the general public since year one.

Stopped by Ansari’s today for lunch, got word that their “Whales And Ales” beer fest is Sept 10, a Saturday. I’m so in. Last year, it was a Fri from 4-8, IIRC, so not worth it for me to attend. I’m all in this year. :) Ramsey has to figure out prices and such for tickets. But straight from the horse’s mouth is this info.

Yep. Off of Cliff Road and Rahncliff Road. Tremendous food and beer, family owned, etc. I cannot recommend it enough.

Last year, it was a Fri from 4-8, IIRC, so not worth it for me to attend. I’m all in this year. :) Ramsey has to figure out prices and such for tickets. I think the current owner isn’t very old (40s?) Unless his Dad owned it previously. I live by the current owner and the kids are…well, kids.

                Rube would know better however.

Pasha (Ramsey’s dad) DID own it, but there was a transfer, due to info from a common friend we (as in you and I, and some of the Old Chicago Crew know, a bald fellow that lives down there). That was before my time of experience of the place. I try to make it down there when I can. So worth it.

Los Animales Barbecue has a truck down at Bauhaus. Several items were tasty but the actual smoked barbecue was lacking in my opinion. Bauhaus isn’t my favorite brewery either but for a patio to spend time with friends, its plenty good. They have a N/A sour that’s fantastic and I usually don’t care for sours

We met Pasha on a recent trip there.  His reaction was priceless when I asked him if Ramses was buying crazy beers again.  For as good as the beer list is there the food is just as good…it’s become our go to place for food when we take our kids to the zoo.

Cracked open a can of the Barrel Aged UA Double Fudgy Brownie Stout.  It’s pretty intense like the non BA version but I was really surprised by how strong the bourbon flavors are.   I’m glad I bought 4 of them but it’s definitely a dipper and probably one worth trying without chilling at all.

Have to plug a little. LTD Brewing’s Anniv party is this Saturday, and I’ll pulling a double shift pouring/behind the rail in the taproom from 2-10. This is your chance to holler at me and say, “Hey, Jerkface, here’s a ticket, pour me a beer!” and I have to. ;) Some great sours in bottles, and on tap, and I think they may bust out some of their vintage stouts, also.

The sours that I know of:
                  Strawberry Daquiri
                  Rum BA Mojito
                  Tequila BA Tequila Sunrise
                  Tequila BA Margarita

It’s a good time, don’t let the weather scare you. And it IS kid-friendly. Some games and a movie showing, live music and such. They shut down the whole block.

Now that I’ve had a day to recover, from pouring at LTD’s Anniv Party on Sat (10 hours pouring, yes, I volunteered for that).

Est crowd was 15K. The weather was the exact opposite of what supposed to happen (I had even checked the report at 10am that morning). Perfect day, the right volunteers were in the right places, as smooth as an event as I can remember.

Only had to cut off one guy in the taproom, where I was pouring. He didn’t seem overly drunk, but cues were there. Leaning on the counter (not sloppily, but leaning nonetheless), asking about the different beers and not getting ONE name correct…that sort of thing. Talked to the employee assigned to us, advised him of the situation, employee informed him that he was done. While the customer didn’t swear, or raise his voice, a LOT of attitude came out, a lot of “I’m better’n you!” talk. He eventually was escorted off the premise. His lady friend (dunno if official gf or not) was massively apologizing for his behavior.

While I suggested the call, and the employee made the call, I am glad we did what we did. That could have been trouble in hindsight, given his attitude after he was cut off.

Back Channel’s Sub Rosa Member Party tonight, and it was a blast. They have a couple collaborations coming up, including one with Pulpit Rock. Rather excited for that. Couldn’t ask for better weather tonight, either. The Killshot pic (since not only was it free tap beer, but also doubled as a bottleshare):

We are going to Fargo this weekend on a booze trip.  We are going to Disgruntled and Drastic Measures on the way up but we may have to think about swinging through Alex too before we up there

We were at Disgruntled but about 90 minutes.  They were transitioning to the new ownership in a couple ways, mostly that they’d run out of merch and are trying to reorder more as fast as they could.  The employees were really relieved the brewery was staying open though and the woman working there was great to talk to about what they’ve been through there.

in terms of the beer their Maple Bourbon Imperial Stout was as good as anything I’ve had lately.  The milk stout and dry Irish stout were both ok, but I love milk stouts and was disappointed with it.  Our friends tried the IPAs and said they were good.

Stopped at Luce Line today (finally) to check them out. Have had a beer or two from them before, but only at the ABR.

Huge space, wow. Parking kinda stinks, although I got there right at opening, so no biggie. 16 beer taps (12 were actually pouring, 4 were coming soon/brewing process) and 2 seltzer lines.

For the most part, guessing it is b/c of the season, all were in the lighter range, no heavy hitters. Prices were about average for a pint/flight. Friendly staff today, very low-key and casual.

Some bonus attributes, for those into that sort of thing: a jukebox (well, Touchtunes or whatever), pulltabs and pinball machines.

I think I’ll be heading back there once in a while. I liked it. The beer wasn’t mind-blowing, but it was good for just hanging out and having a cold one.

Yeah – we were there a couple hours earlier. The sours were excellent and everything else to me were just ok

All of the fruity stuff I’ve had is great.  I love fruit sours.  Curious if it’s worth a road trip to the brewery some day…I have zero other reasons to go to Fargo. 🤣

We ended up coming back.  They have a bunch of fruity stuff on right now between Chonk, Brains and Prrt.  The lemon bar beer ice cream is really good too.

most of the rest of the beer outside of Drekker and Junkyard is pretty average in my opinion but it’s been a fun trip.

Haven’t been to Drekker, but love their beer. Junkyard has a nice space and good beer. Drastic (Wadena) is a must-stop for the beer since you’re up there anyways. The space is meh, but the beer is boo-yah.

Yeah, was referring to the other stuff in F-M besides Junkyard and Drekker being meh.  We did Drastic and Disgruntled on the way up and may hit Pantown on the way home tomorrow.

                      Pantown is underrated, IMO.

I tried 4 different beers there and 3 of them I thought were quite good.  The milk stout was excellent and I was surprised I liked the Strawberry Rhubarb sour as much as I did.

I didn’t realize they were only about 5 minutes from my brother’s house.  I’ll have to keep that in mind when we go up there
