Yeah at this point figuring out the forwards is far more pressing but that’s good to see.

    Not sure we need 3F’s.

    Knies, Cooley, Snugerrud

    Pitlick, Huglen, Kurth

    _____, Nelson, Brodz

    Strobel, Pino, Nevers

    Schmidt, Mittelstadt, _____

That third line looks like a fourth line.

The 3 forwards could probably include confirmation of Mittelstadt as one (no one has confirmed it yet), but I would still rather carry 16 instead of 15 based on that roster.

I don’t know why you just assume J. Mittelstadt is not coming in. Line charts and social media are pretty good indicators of if a kid is still committed or not. Everything still indicates he is committed. He’s an 01 so he’s all out of junior eligibility.

Not saying it’s 100% but with the information we have now we should be considering he will be on campus next year.

Yeah until Nelson shows that he can raise his game consistently and do it vs good opponents, the guy is better suited for the fourth line.

Nelson does everything for this team. As a senior he is more than capable of a top 9 role.

Except create offense. 10pts as a junior is not top 9 production. But he’ll definitely get a chance next year and hopefully he can start putting the puck in the net like he did in Luverne.

Brodz has been too 9 for 3 years… I agree he has flaws, but upgrading him is different than filling holes.

With all the departures in last week I think we just need 1 good forward vs a handful of guys. We have enough pieces to fill roles. Ofcourse that’s assuming Pinoniemi will be ready for start of season, and no one seems to have any idea what his injury is.

On the bright side, Connor Kurth liked the Gopher Hockey Instagram photo of Motzko saying “Let’s Play Hockey” from last night. Hopefully that is an indication that he not following his buddies out of town as some have speculated. Of course it could mean nothing but is good fodder for this site.

Seeing that lineup on paper makes it look a little scarier, could you imagine if we didn’t get cooley.

Exactly, I don’t expect huge production out of a third liner without PP time but I agree that kind of production in a big ten heavy schedule isn’t ideal. You can hope he comes back stronger next year and doesn’t get injured but it’s understandable that people were more optimistic when he was slated to be fourth line center rather than third line center and having a fourth line that looks like it can barely tread water.

    Here’s a list to watch:
    Walker
    Lamb
    Dornbach
Mastrosimone (East coast, rare for UMN)
    Cole Spicer
    Nick Moldenhauer
What do all the Michigan recruits do when Pearson is out?

    Update:
    Walker – Still an option…
Lamb – Still an option, not ideal
    Dornbach – Out
    Mastrosimone – Out
    Spicer – Out
    Moldenhauer – Indications are Michigan
Michigan recruits – Seems like Mel is still the coach, no exodus

What will be will be. I’m trying not to stress over a season that doesn’t start until October. Bob and co. have moved the program forward each year and I faith they will figure something out for the 2022-23 season. Was last week a bit of a let down? Yes. But this is still a very talented team and I’m confident we will have some fun watching them next year. In Bob we trust.

It’s not stress. The damage is done. There is an excitement when you know player announcements are imminent (I imagine within a week or two) and you don’t have much of a clue what it will be.

lol It’s a moot point (after today) but Spicer just completed 2 years at NTDP (for starters) and Lamb played single A HS hockey (last year) for a team not named Hermantown.. so there’s that. Players with Spicers pedigree rarely fall in your lap, fortunately the FnHawks were overstocked & Spicer wasn’t willing to wait, tDogs had availability & happily accommodated him.

I am not hating on Spicer, And I do hope we find a better option than Lamb for next year and can send him back to juniors. I just don’t think Spicer was that player. Also as gopher fans have learned NTDP doesn’t always mean success, now that you’ve landed couple you may learn the same.

I get it…Kelley (two years) & Gallatin (this year) have played well, but it’s no guarantee, nothing is. Howard led the NTDP 17 team in scoring last year & is top 3 this year (I believe he, Cooley & Snuggy) while Spicer put up very respectable numbers too. They’ll be 18-19 year old freshmen (all 4 of them in 22-23).

In Perbix’s three seasons with the Gophers he played 105 games and had 11 goals, 17 assists. Last season he played 38 games and had 5 goals, 7 assists. He was a NHL 4th round draft pick. Clearly he didn’t achieve what he or anybody was expecting. A change happening was certainly a strong possibility.

In college hockey you not only have the portal, but you also have players with agents…..excuse me, advisors.  Those advisors are positioning the players to be in the best possible situation for a professional career.  If the agent…. sorry, advisor doesn’t like the ice time their client….sorry, player is getting or the line they play on, then they complain to the coach and/or move their player to a team with more opportunity.

We have to get used to moves like Broz and Perbix as long as you have drafted players hoping for NHL contracts.

I assume Perbix knows the NHL is not in his future. I’d think it was just about getting top nine minutes somewhere and the potential (not guarantee) of PP time. WMU was super old this year. Guessing they lost a ton of forwards.

I know the Spicer family, not this part of the family personally, know of them, but I graduated with one on the EGF side.  I am pretty certain he would have gone ANYWHERE else than the Gophers.  I mean, anywhere.

Assuming Bob knew the Lucius bros and Broz weren’t going to be here next year then yeah that seems most likely, though idk why Perbix thinks he’s gonna get some huge bump in terms of opportunities elsewhere.

The other possibility is that Motzko was blindsided by all of the departures and told Perbix that he might be more of an extra next year, which would’ve burned the bridge. Seems kinda unlikely that the coaches wouldn’t know about them leaving but most of us don’t really know why they left and are just left to speculate.

Either way it doesn’t really matter that much and I didn’t assume Perbix was coming back anyhow.

Edit: kinda forgot that Perbix was drafted lol. This why I don’t put a whole lot of stock in kids being drafted beyond the second round, there are some gems in the later rounds but more often than not these aren’t gonna be NHLers

I’m not surprised that Perbix thinks he could see more opportunities and find more success elsewhere. There have been plenty of Gophers who have transferred out and seen pretty significant increases in playing time and production. For example, Clayton Phillips, Nate Burke, and Garret Wait all come to mind immediately.

I really dont understand this phenomenon but it seems real.

I don’t think it is that hard to understand, maybe they thrive is a different system or maybe they were buried behind more talented players or maybe they just are late bloomers.  Happens in other sports too and I guarantee it isn’t just a phenomenon here.

The problem is, when you are getting top end players every year and you are getting young players every year it can be difficult for those players to develop.  Look at say Kentucky Basketball.  They bring in like 5 draftable players every class…and if a player falls behind a little bit they don’t have the time to catch up because the next class is coming and they are just as loaded.  Player gets buried, goes elsewhere and finally has a chance to show how good he really is.

In the modern college atmosphere I just don’t think you are going to see many 4 year guys for teams like the Gophs unless they recruit older players and even then ice time will become an issue.  I think the next adjustment that will happen is that our lower line guys will be transfer portal guys.  I just don’t see players willing to take on those roles when there is a free transfer to better ice time elsewhere.  Maybe a legacy player or someone who knows they have no shot and just want to play for the team they love, but even then I am not sure they will do that if they can go somewhere else and play and still contend.  And honestly I can’t say I blame them.

As I recall, Perbix initially committed to Notre Dame, then down the road flipped to the Gophers (and is an NHL draft pick). Guys like that, even if they’re in the lineup every game aren’t going to be content playing 4th line their entire career, so I’m not surprised he left. Many observers I know feel the Gophers rarely recruit a Tom Serratore/Jake Parenteau type player who understands (coming in) that their role will be as a 4 year – fourth liner or 3rd D pair player. And not targeting a few of of these type of players for these specific roles…ends up causing problems…

Agree, tBob is better at this than tDon was…Fish & Nevers being examples, JM & Strobel should fit these roles pretty well too, Staudacher is more of a regular. Sorenson left for Alaska, but to his credit earned his degree from the U in 3 years. 👍

Even if they understand doesn’t mean they will always accept it if they have options.  It was one thing if the Jake Flemings of the world would have to sit out a year to play but now without that there is no reason to stay.  Especially if your career is likely done after your senior season, might as well go somewhere and play right?

I have no idea where to put this, so I chose here. Apparently, Jill of The Current Morning Show DJ fame, has the same issue as Cowgirl. She takes a…break, and her team (the Wild) score a goal.

Twitter is hysterical over this issue, as in, “ZOMG that’s amazing.” I’m thinking, “We have the OG on that right here.” :D

The problem is Brodzinski is slotted into that line, too… Walker-Nelson-Brodzinski sparks ZERO excitement after seeing how often BMW disappeared with McLaughlin who is WAY more dynamic than Nelson.

Under the impression, Bob must think Cooley and others will be enough to get us over the offense lost last year. Can’t imagine it would’ve been to hard to convince smilanic to come to the UM vs UW. Time will tell.

He needs at least two BODIES, let alone contributors. He is surely not settling at the moment.

The problem is the last minute (relative to transfer portal) departures absolutely f**ked him.

In the same boat as you, this would be the year to go all out with transfers with a championship level d core.

Changing my tune to let’s get Walker back if we can. I don’t think it would hurt to have some veteran leadership up front. Plus we need the numbers.

As I’ve stated previously, chance  of Walker signing a free agent pro deal is 90% & 10% he wants to return & if so, there should be a roster spot for him ☝️

Do you have the 90%/10% in writing from Sammy? If not then people are going to speculate about him until one of two things happens he announces signing a free agent deal or the Gophers fill up their roster with more forwards.

If the Gophers fill up their roster and then Sammy doesn’t get a free agent deal this summer I am curious what his back up plan is? Maybe playing in Europe? Would he get a “regular” job?

I would expect Coach is actively looking and figuring out what are the best options to fill the team and isn’t likely going to wait for the summer free agent try out period if that is Sammy’s plan A.

I didn’t do anything to it. It’s the emoji/message you originally posted that I quoted. This has happened other times with that particular emoji since the Board changed. Just to let you know.

IIRC, the large emojis are a result from quoting a message that used emojis from the phone and not the ones from the site.

So is the lesson learned here to never quote bearpaw since he uses phone emojis? If so maybe if we never quote him he will post less and we all win (less Bulldog talk).

Into what line 3?  I dont need my 3rd line to be exciting I need them to grind and check top end lines from other squads.  Walker can do that all day.  If he is playing higher than it better be because of injury or WJC or something because he just isn’t a good enough scorer to be any higher than that.  Maybe his work ethic will make Nelson better or something…

Are you seriously praising Walker and Company for their defensive prowess?

Anyways, my point is they probably can’t get much out of those three together, and would need to spread them over other lines which hurts the other players.

If Walker committed to being a PK and PITA winger, then he could have a career ahead of him if he put on just a little more size to battle for loose pucks.

As much as I hope Cooley will come in and light up the score sheet every night I kinda doubt his overall impact is significantly better than Senior year Meyers. You also need more than one line no matter how good he is.

I kinda doubt Walker is coming back so unless that happens there’s not much point in discussing it but I agree with what ppl said above for the most part.

Yeah I think if he was a winger instead of a top 2 center he’d be more free to take risks and not have as much defensive responsibility. As a top 6 center he was just outmatched vs the elite NCAA teams top lines hence some of the frustration we see here. I do think Brodzinski was part of the problem there but it doesn’t explain everything.

Could he play on a line with Huglen and Pitlick? Pitlick is fast and seems to have constant energy while Huglen is a gamer and I feel like he could set Urkel up with Heidi Klum.

Praising…no.  But he is a grinder and is not awful in his own zone and has the speed to win puck battles.  If we take away his need to score and he only focuses on that he will be fine.  If he wants any future in hockey that will be his role anyways.

In reality though I would prefer he move on like yesterday.

In what world does gopher hockey lose a potential starting goalie to AIC? Best of luck to him, goodbye to his professional aspirations.
