::Transfer portal is so weird man. Felt like we’ve lost half our team.
Someone have a list handy of guys we’re losing (either graduation, signed, or transfer) and guys who are coming back next season? So many big announcements of this stuff in less than 3 weeks kind of has my head spinning more than Goldy’s.

Just the Portal List:
Brennan Boynton 3 years of eligibility left
Tristan Broz 3 years of eligibility left
Jack Perbix 2 years of eligibility left
Jonny Sorenson 2 years of eligibility leftMatt Denman – Graduated, still has 1 year of eligibility left due to Covid
Grant Cruikshank – Graduated, still has 1 year of eligibility left due to Covid transferring to St. Cloud State University
Ben Brinkman – Graduated, still has 1 year of eligibility left due to Covid transferring to University of Notre Dame- This reply was modified 3 months, 1 week ago by

I wonder how this compares to some of our rivals, say UND or UMD?

::To make matters worse – i am hearing broz a Denver pioneer? It’s crazy all this is happening so fast. If we had a halfway decent spring – some of these guys wouldn’t feel like they need to explore other options. I hope they can rebuild for 2023. Feels like there’s more to the story in dinkytown???

::Today I learned I have a different definition of unexpected than some others.
I expected Lucius x 2 to be gone, but most on here did not. No one expected Broz. Boynton ya that’s not unexpected so that is a mistype.
Oh, and that doesn’t even include Cruikshank and Perbix. Cruikshank not being terrible surprising given the senior day presentation, but another guy that could have helped replace top 9.

::A shame about Broz.
Lucius didn’t surprise me. Something was clearly up when he went from warmups to never being on the ice again. I had my own suspicions (pure conjecture) on what it was but now I doubt that was it.
We have some pretty damn good players next year. Let’s see how the coaches round out the team.

::It sucks that we’re losing forward depth because that was what I thought would set the team over the top next year. Losing 3 of the top 9 (I’m assuming Cruz is gone) puts a huge dent in that. I think there’s some valid reasons to not be as optimistic as we were before that happened. The issue this past year was that outside of Knies/Meyers line there wasn’t much consistent offense to be had. Looking at the potential lineup now it feels similar.
Now in fairness a portal pickup or someone just taking a big leap would make a massive difference. If someone like Brodzinski, Nelson, Nevers or someone on the bottom lines stepped up that would help make up for what was lost. Also Lucius did get hurt and there’s no guarantee he stays 100% healthy in an alternate universe where he stays with the team. And on the off chance that Walker comes back, that would probably push a guy like Nelson down to the fourth line which would be helpful from a depth perspective.
Also with all these guys leaving, it makes the moves by Perbix and to a lesser extent Sorensen seem a little bit more puzzling. Sorensen I could see hitting the portal out of frustration with the ice time he got this season, it’s understandable. Perbix on the other hand got consistent ice and unless he thinks he deserves a higher role, you kinda wonder if him hitting the portal was his doing or Motzko’s. Replacing Perbix isn’t some monumental task obviously but I’m not sure someone like Strobel or Schmidt is going to be an upgrade.

::I think it’s a stretch to say Cruz was a top 9 forward. He was a guy that ideally we could have sent to juniors for a year. He also missed a lot of time this season and while I believe he is a good player I don’t think he would have been an impact player for us next season.
It’s not a stretch.
Side note: If Pearson is out today, kind of not fair to the players as they don’t have time to get into the portal with any knowledge of who the next coach would be? Or maybe the next coach is already identified.

The players could be under some kind of gag order or are just as well left in the dark and have no clue.

April’s gotta be the record. Two seasons over in one month!
Nah I remember when seasons were over years in advance.
Then again I am old enough to remember when a tie was a top five loss in program history!

::So back to goldy shuffle’s comments from the other day. He mentioned 3 “bad” things and possibly a 4th bad thing. Bad thing #1 was Broz to portal and #2 was Chaz going pro. I think a lot of people on here assumed bad thing #3 was Cruz not coming (rightfully so), but now with Boynton to the portal, I think that is actually bad thing #3 and Cruz not coming is the possibly bad thing #4.
Cruz still has the gophers commit thing on his Instagram, and I’m honestly curious if he is still planning on joining. The departure of Chaz went well, at least publicly, with Bob saying nice things as well as Chaz about the program. This is just a thought because a lot of people are assuming Cruz not coming is a done deal, but it may not be the case. 🤷🏻♂️

::I’d think he was grouping the Lucius bros as one of the three events to come. In the same sense, don’t know if Boynton was the “maybe a fourth” but I feel like that one was coming regardless so it would be in the three.
The maybe a fourth could be another player outside of the 4 we’ve identified unless we hear otherwise.
None of this logic is confirmed by him.

agree to disagree. I like Cruz as a long term prospect but am not convinced he is ready to contribute to an NCAA program next season. I believe his best development would have been Ushl next season. He’s still underdeveloped and is not a great skater. He’s coming off an injury filled season and scouts have said he hasn’t been great since returning. College hockey is as old and gritty as its ever been. Broz and Chaz were top players for next season I’m not ready to call Cruz huge loss. nodak lost spicer for same reason we could lose cruz. It will be interesting to watch where he gets drafted

There is an ongoing investigation at the school, the results of which are supposed to be made public soon. I think there are some procedural advantages for UMich in not having Mel Pearson as an employee in that they may be able to close the investigation without releasing any information publicly.

::Correct. I think some people think Bob can just call these kids that have signed NLI’s and just say come here. It is a process in which the kids have to tell the school that they want out and then the school must then let them out. The schools don’t have to release them or add stipulations to where they can’t go.

Which is why I point to Spicer and Moldenhauer as the more direct options, being uncommitted. Even more direct option being asking your captain to come back. :|

I believe he signed his NLI well over 1 year ago. Given the uncertainty at Michigan it’s possible.
I don’t think Motzko can just call anyone. I do think advisors are always involved and could view Minnesota losses this week as an opportunity for their guy.

::Yeah how much did that help them last year? First round picks is a worthless stat I’m sorry… Lying about COVID could get them in NCAA trouble too. Even if he is gone it might not stop that. How stupid is he?
I’d say it helped them a lot. They were an OT loss away from playing the NC title game. The other M team with all their draft picks didn’t fare as well.
Denver, Minnesota and Michigan were similar teams, but I think Denver had a little more sandpaper to their game, which helped them break through Mankato. Their game against Mankato was a lot like Minnesota’s. Denver had like four shots on goal almost half way through the game. It felt like Mankato had them right where they wanted them, but when they lost the lead their system broke down and Denver had the talent to cash in.

::He’s also going to be on a contending team if he goes to Michigan, too, regardless of who is behind the bench. Feels like a tough flip. As of now I’d say with him included Michigan has the best class in the country coming in. Probably 6 first rounders in one class.
6 first rounders is generous…Mcgroarty and Nazar for sure. Brindley and Fantilli aren’t eligible until ‘23. Casey is very good, but not sure he gets into 1st.
On Hallum, he committed a while ago and blew-up after. Maybe he can get a little bigger scholarship with us and still be on a contender. I’m not saying it’s likely…but it is possible. Probably even guess that’s how Broz ends up in portal, advisor tests water on what else is out there.

We both lost to teams that had less top end picks. That is the point. A high number of draft picks is not as big of a deal in hockey as it is made out to be. Some of the biggest choking Lucia teams were friggin loaded. “Less” talented teams beat them all the time that is just the way a one and done tourny goes.

::The teams that win in hockey always have elite goaltending. Chrona was reason they beat Michigan and Mankato, clearly they made plays to score but Chrona kept them in both games. Same as Mass the year before and UMD. Tampa won cup because Andre V as well. Hopefully we can find a goalie and I’m not worried about a few forwards that left in April.

I mean sure, though the difference between a 7th rounder and being undrafted is usually non-existent and that “stat” isn’t really taking that part into account. It’s a dumb argument that weights a first rounder the same as a seventh rounder and is completely disingenuous. Teams that have more early draft picks tend to be better, that’s not really being contested here.
edit: Scuba is also spot-on, Denver has no chance in that final without hot goaltending as they got considerably outplayed for two periods. Fortunately Chrona was far superior to McKay in that game and they weathered the storm/got a bit lucky and beat the cows. But Denver had 5 shots in two periods before things turned around.

::Michigan was #1 in the pairwise and lost in OT of the semis. Clearly their recruiting strategy didn’t work!
That isn’t what we are saying, but feel free to keep tilting at windmills Mr. Strawman.
What we are saying is that for all the bluster about how great Michigan is and how many 1st rounders they have, they ended up exactly where they always do, short of the goal. Yippie they lost in OT instead of regulation in the semis…congrats you still lost. (ask the ’89 Gophers if losing in OT changes the outcome)
For all of Michigan’s “greatness” they didn’t win the conference or the National Title. They won the conference tourny so at least they didn’t get completely shut out I guess. I would honestly rather have our team and our season over theirs. They have been doing this as long as I have watched hockey (which is not as long as many but still dates back to last century
) they load up on talent, get hyped up by everyone because of their titles from 1865 and their prestige in other sports, then fall short to teams that often have none of the prestige or history. (unless they played us, then we beat them because they are pansies!!
) Where were all of their high recruiting classes then…sitting at home. In this case though they lost to a team with equal prestige in Denver, but Denver should have been no match for the eleventy billion 1st rounders MEEEEEEEEEEEEEECHIGAN had!1!1!1!1
That is the point. I wouldn’t change our recruiting philosophy for the most part, and neither would they. But their high recruiting classes havent been paying dividends so there is no reason for anyone to sweat them. They aren’t playing for conference tourny titles they are playing for national titles. Most times their teams shrink under pressure or if you throw your weight around a bit. Been that way forever and will likely not change in the future. That is why they haven’t won it all since I was in high school. Since the advent of the BTHC they have hung exactly 2 banners…

I posted this earlier, source is a well connected Edina guy (chance of Walker returning is SLIM (at best)
Word is –
Sammy is going to plan on attending multiple camps this summer on FA tryouts and earn a signing. TB actually passed on signing him (no room on roster even in minors)…was more of a reach pick for Yzerman and Brisebois contingent has ‘moved on’…
Sammy’s college career is in rear view. But that’s just the word – one phone call on any given day can prove otherwise. 😉
