Northern Gopher 218 put a Google Sheet together for the women’s list. So I have added it to the main Transfer Portal page. If someone keeps track of where the women transfer to, we can give you access to our main sheet and you can help us keep it updated.

GPL is getting quite the reputation in regards to breaking the portal news. I have seen you retweeted by multiple hockey news people lately.

A little bit. But I have not figured out a way to block ads for Golden user yet.

100% credit goes to “Northern Gopher 218“.

I have no idea who he is. I have never asked. But he keeps the list updated. Sends me a PM when a big name comes up.

    So thank him!

I was told this last night and thought I’d believe it when I saw it. Webster is supposed to be a high level field hockey player also. Wonder if she might go somewhere and try to do both. Of course if that was that big of a priority she probably would have gone to that type of school in the first place.

Times are slow so I’ll toss out a little nugget. I subscribe to “Neutral Zone”, a scouting site for both male and female hockey players. I’m truthfully not a huge fan, but it’s really the only thing out there on the female side of things.

Having said all that they did put out their ratings recently for the “USA Hockey” 14u nationals. So in the ones-to-keep-an-eye-on they gave five players an “A+” rating from the tournament. All five are 2025 grads, just finishing up their 9th grade year.

    • Maya Engler (Green Giants) forward, one of the great class of freshmen that played on the state champion Andover high school team this past year.
    • Heather Wolff (Chicago Mission) goalie
    • Nicole Gorbatenko (Chicago Mission) forward, has a twin sister defenseman that got an “A” rating. Has an older sister Kelly that will play for the U.S. in the World 18u championships this summer and will be a badger freshman in the fall of 2023.
    • Anabella Fanale (Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) forward
    • Taylor Senecal (Assabet Valley) defense, plays her winter season at Essex high school in Essex Junction, Vermont.

The Green Giants team (from Minnesota) beat Chicago Mission in the finals.

“Neutral Zone” released their ratings for the 16u division at the “USA Hockey” nationals. The grading was on a tighter curve than the 14u division as only one player got an A+ rating. That player is Finley McCarthy, a forward from Selects Academy who finished as runner up in the tournament to Minnesota Grey. Finley is a native of Whitefish, Montana.

Gopher recruit Ava Lindsay (Minnesota Grey/Minnetonka) is one of five players in the tournament to get an “A” rating. Two other Gopher recruits from Minnesota Grey, Elly Klepinger (Minnetonka) and Lauren O’Hara (Centennial), received B+ ratings.

Interesting. Previous rumors had her possibly heading to the Ivy League. On the plus side, she works her tail off and is a goal scorer. On the negative, she is tiny, tiny. Overall this still seems like a somewhat underwhelming class.

Yes, only the fifth European. Two Finns (Nora Räty and Mira Jalosuo) about eight years back and another Finn and a Swede in this fall’s recruiting class.

Just a reminder, the delayed IIHF Women’s World U18 Championships will start next Monday in Madison. I’m planning on heading down for the first two days. The ROSTER was “announced” the other day, but it is the same group as was planning on going to Sweden last January.

As far as Gopher ties. Only two current recruits will be playing. Forward Madison Kaiser (Holy Family) will be on campus this fall, and forward Ava Lindsay (Minnetonka) will be coming in in the fall of 2023.

As far as future recruiting, only three team members are uncommitted (I believe). Forwards Josie St. Martin (Stillwater), Maggie Scannell (Shattuck/Wynantskill, New York) and Finley McCarthy (Selects Academy/Whitefish, Montana) have all just finished their sophomore high school year and will be 2024 recruits. They will be able to commit to schools after August first.

If streaming information for the tournament is out there yet, I haven’t seen it.

    Some u18 tournament information.

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT PRE-CAMP

    1. Pre-camp is taking place at the National Sport Center Super Rink in Blaine, Minnesota. This is the same rink the 2022 U.S. Olympic Women’s Ice Hockey Team held their Olympic residency in the lead up to Beijing.

    2. The U18 team will be practicing on the same ice and using the same facilities as the Olympic team did. There was a locker room renovation prior to the start of Olympic residency in September 2021. The facilities now emulate the storied history and success of the U.S. Women’s National Team program.

    3. The team will be in Blaine for a week before making the four-hour drive to Madison on Saturday, June 4 for the start of the tournament.

    4. Team USA is not the only team holding pre-camp in the Twin Cities area. Team Canada and Team Finland will also be preparing in Minneapolis. Team Canada will be practicing at the Super Rink as well.

    5. Team USA will scrimmage against Team Canada on June 2. Puck drop is set for 3 p.m. CT at the National Sports Center Super Rink in Blaine. A stream will be available via Live Barn.

Pre IIHF World U18 Championships action: U.S. – Canada scrimmage today at 3:00 at the Super Rink. CANADA’S ROSTER. No real Gopher ties to Canada this year. Sara Swiderski was in for an unofficial visit a couple of years ago but wound up committing to Clarkson. It seems like the staff probably had some interest in Alex Law last fall but she committed to Boston U. Karel Préfontaine and Alexia Aubin are teammates of Gopher recruit Emma Kreisz at Stanstead College.

Not sure, but I think it’s unlikely. I don’t recall paying for other “USA Hockey” scrimmage type things I’ve gone to in the past.

If you go, dress warm. It will likely be on rink 5, and all of the back four rinks are pretty chilly.

1-0 U.S. after one. Pretty even period. Little edge to Canada early. Edge to U.S. later in the period. Nice crowd.

2-0 U.S. after two now. Still relatively even, but a definite edge to the U.S. for the bulk of that period.

No sign that the staff is targeting either either one, but a couple of interesting girls at the u18 worlds are Alexia Aubin (Canada) and Sanni Vanhanen (Finland). Aubin is Canada’s youngest player and their lone uncommitted player. She just finished her sophomore season at Stanstead College, where she is a teammate of Gopher commit Emma Kreisz.

Vanhanen was the youngest player at the  Beijing games this past winter.

A tournament preview from the IIHF site….

Killing some time in my hotel north of Madison waiting for the first games of the women’s u18 world championships.

Winny Brodt’s first weekend of her Prospects & Futures program ended yesterday. Took in a few games and interesting to see the next generation on the horizon. Emily Pohl, the oldest of Johnny Pohl and Krissy Wendell’s daughters was on a team. On the same team was a daughter of Ronda (Curtin) Engelhardt. Her name is Elliana, looks like they will likely be teammates at Hill-Murray in a year or two.

The common theme in these two clips (beside the goal scorer) is the old guy in the blue sweat jacket is rumored to be me. Haven’t really had to fight the crowd these two days. Enjoyed the hockey though.

Think I have had the privilege of conversing with you at a girls high school hockey section final at Parade Ice Garden.

In regards to your comment about the Gopher’s 2023 recruiting class being underwhelming, it is pretty evident watching this tournament, specifically the US squad, that the Gopher staff has not done as good on the recruitng front as their biggest rival.

If you thought it was a privilege, it probably wasn’t me.

The quality of the commits for the 2024 class that will start trickling in in a few weeks should give a better picture of the future direction of the program. The new staff should have their feet underneath them after last year’s shake up.

Given the quality and experience of all the returnees for the upcoming season, I’m probably being a little too optimistic. But I’m of the opinion that the Gophers will have their best team in years…offensively. Tremendous returning scoring talent and experience, so much so that our coaching staff will have plenty to work with in putting the best of that returning (and incoming) talent into the right combinations to score, in bunches. And their power play, led by any combinations of Heise, Boreen, Skaja, Hemp, Murphy and Zoom-Boom – and possibly others, all, just up front – should find plenty of chemistry to generate and score from numerous close-in opportunities, screens and rebounds. So, unless something goes wrong, offense should not be a problem.

    HOWEVER, challenges remain.

We absolutely need to work on – again and again and again – safe, puck controlled alternative puck movement and options on breaking out of our defensive and into the neutral zone. This must involve movement and support from our forwards who must work closely with our D to skate into open and safe areas. Again the keys are maintaining possession out of the defensive zone. Once into the neutral zone with puck possession, scoring opportunities will open up.

I don’t think you’re being too optimistic.  The fact that Potomak and her propensity to hang onto the puck has moved on is a plus.  All that you mentioned as far as the returning players is going to make a lot of competion to fill out the top three lines. So much so, that they could very easily have 4 lines play and have a lot of versatility in what each of those lines can do.

Defensively, if the rumor is true that Lizi Norton may be in the Gopher lineup this fall, that would be a nice addition.   It will be interesting to see how good Laitinen is coming from the Finnish Olympic team.  Also interested to see if Maggie Nicholson and Gracie Ostertag can regain their form coming back from injury/surgery.

Goaltending is a bit of a question mark but I think both Pahl and Vetter are capable of stepping up.

A lot to like about what lies ahead for this team in 2022/2023.

Was going to post this in the women’s thread but since the discussion is here……

A friend texted me to tell me Gracie was out on the ice at Ridder yesterday for the first time since her surgery.

With Covid-19 delaying the Women’s u18 Worlds which were concluded last week, it seems a little strange that we are quite a ways into the process of choosing next year’s team. About three weeks ago I posted the local girls invited to the National Select 18 camp to be held July 15-21 in St. Cloud. Here is the CURRENT LIST of invitees. Still waiting on Minnesota to release names from their recently concluded 15s camp (2007 birth years). A few 2005 and 2006 birth years will be picked from the national 16 & 17 camp that starts later this week.

Looking over the 2007s on that list I found THIS on one of the girls. Sounds like quite the all around athlete.

Just realized that I probably saw Ms. Finale play last summer. THIS TEAM was in last summer at a tournament at the Super Rink and won their division. ASU men’s coach Greg Powers was coaching the team (his daughter was playing). They had three of the five 2007 birth year players who have been invited to the Select 18 camp (probably expect Minnesota to get one or two more when announced). I believe I only saw them play about a half a period during Zamboni time of another game I was watching. Sage Smith and Megan Healy are the other two from that team who will be at the U.S. camp. The Smith girl plays at Shattuck, so I’ve seen her a few times. Very impressive player. From the hockey hotbed of Lafayette, Louisiana.

Carly Humphrey: I’m extremely honored and excited to announce my commitment to play Division 1 hockey at the University of Minnesota. I couldn’t choose a better environment to further my education and continue my hockey career. I’ve been blessed with some of the best coaches from youth to high school, whether it was winter season or summer season, and I will never be able to thank them enough. I’d also like to thank Elk River Hockey, my parents, sisters, family, teammates, and friends for supporting me through everything and more. I’ve always dreamt of becoming a Gopher, and still can’t believe I’ve gotten the opportunity to! Can’t wait to get started! Go Gophs!

There are two Fleming sisters at the camp. The older one, Delaney, is a ‘23 grad year. They both played at Rochester Lourdes before moving to Shattuck. They are the younger sisters of Maddox Fleming, who, I believe, will be a freshman at Notre Dame this season.

As far as the Louisiana girl goes, she is a player. Big, strong girl.
