When he was a 9th grader he looked like the next McDonagh. Since then his peers have just caught him more and more year after year and here we are with him as more or less a bottom 6 D and people not even wanting to invite him back.streakygopher

Brinkman has his place on the team. His position as a 5th year guy is debatable, but he would be a valuable asset if the other guys took off.He was a superstar in high school and projected out as a top college defenseman. Didn’t turn out that way…it’s a common tale.
He shouldn’t have accelerated high school to join the Gophers early. If he stays to play for the Gophs for a 5th year, he gets back on the same cycle as his high school classmates. Never understood why he and his family decided to accelerate, but can’t change it now. If he had stayed at Edina for the 18-19 season, their first D pair would have been Brinkman and Mike Vorlicky. Pretty strong duo. I also assume that leaving high school early hurt his draft position. If he had stayed in high school and dominated, I think he would have gone earlier than mid-6th round in the 2019 NHL draft.

Agreeing with everything. Can see why he wanted to give joining early a shot. The D unit he joined was PATHETIC, so he had a good chance of getting big minutes. He joined Sadek/Stucker/Denman/Phillips/Zuhlsdorf/Rossini/Nanne haha a group with in all likelihood zero NHL games and 5 AHL games so far.

Has he even played 5 games in the last 3 years? Wonder if it’s still that shoulder injury from high school.

Nick Williams has de-committed from Minnesota. He committed under the prior coaching staff, as an 8th-grader, before the new NCAA rules were adopted. I’m told he is looking for a school that better fits his career goals.

Aka we didn’t want him. He’s a good player don’t get me wrong smooth with the puck. He’s also 5”9 and questionable defensively. Not too heartbroken about this one.

Quote:Cal Thomas, defenseman, Sioux Falls Stampede, Minnesota commit: The one-time Vermont commit re-opened his recruitment this season and generated a lot of interest. The Arizona Coyotes draft pick might not run the power play for the Gophers, but he’s a strong two-way defender.

19-24-43 in 29 games is pretty good for an 18 year old in USHL.

Minnesota people got used to Doug Mientkiewicz. Think of it as “Bartis” instead of “Mint” and you’ve got it.

::If Boynton doesn’t get a fair shot in the next two months he’s 100 percent gone. I’d say he’s 90 percent gone as of now. Then the problem they are going to have is you have Close, who was brought here to be the No. 3 goalie (and who knows, maybe he’ll step up and be amazing, I hope to hell that happens), and Bartoszkiewicz, a young commit who struggled in the USHL, the presumptive top two goalies heading into next fall, which could preclude you from getting a bigger name via the transfer portal. In theory, a transfer is going to head somewhere that, on paper, they can be at least a 1A. Doesn’t seem like the setup here will paint that picture for anyone if you have two guys returning who split games the second half of the previous season.
Most likely scenario for the fall at this point is probably Close, Bartoszkiewicz and a low-end transfer or someone who’s aged out of juniors that’s currently uncommitted. Hopefully they don’t lose as much talent up front and on defense as it sure looks like they will after this season ends.

::Does anyone have any idea as to what the situation is with Boynton? His numbers look pretty good from last year and people seemed pretty excited about him when he committed. I know he was sick and injured in the fall but is there more to it than that? Is there some sort of beef between Boynton and the coaching staff? maroon and gold

What makes Boynton 90% gone? Because he didn’t start over the Mike Richter award winner?

Maybe that he clearly sits behind Close and that they brought in Bartoszkiewicz early to make up for losing LaFontaine. He was recruited as a starter, I doubt he wants to ride pine for 4 years.

I hadn’t ever heard of Grant MN before the Lucius brothers committed to the Gophers. It’s apparently a big town* nearby. And to be honest now that I know about it I still never hear or read anything about Grant.

I lived in Grant for two years….with my mother in law. It was just a township back then. Other than a town hall and a ball field it’s nothing but rural north Stillwater. There’s no town. Probably more horse turds than anything out there.

::I liked what I saw out of Kurth and Snuggerud (especially that shot) in the Biosteel game today. Kurth’s connection with his USHL teammate, Halliday, was super evident and that line always seemed to be creating chances. For Snuggerud, I read somewhere that his skating has really improved over the last year and I definitely noticed the improvement. On the flipside, I’d say that Kurth’s skating needs some work. For defense, Chesley, Rinzel and Mittelstadt didn’t really stick out to me as being good or bad. I’ll probably watch it again to see if I missed anything on them but then again, you can’t really base all that much off an exhibition game.

Also, I didn’t realize Mittelstadt was out there for both the game-tying and OT winning goals for Team Blue but he wasn’t really at fault for either goal.

If this Goldy character does have a legit lead I wouldn’t consider getting Moore a coup.

Where did you get that information, because there is no mention of where the kid is from in any of his posts. All he said was “Potentially biggest coup since Kessel.”
Bonin asked if he is from Mn and he responded with No in the potential recruits thread.

Why would getting a MN kid from the metro area be considered a “coup”?
