Not sure what you mean by the clock running backwards… do you mean starting from 0:00 and going forward?

Yes. I guess I’m used to other sports like football, basketball and hockey where the clock winds down to 0:00, and when it reaches 0:00 in the last period (or overtime) the game’s over, and they never add time at that point.

The added time is b/c they want to play 90 minutes of soccer. So during stoppages, the refs add the time up (not sure how, to be honest) and add it at the end.
