We have a light switch for it, but I will try to pull the panel to see if there is a knob near the fireplace.

Ours is the same. A lightswitch to turn it on and off. However, there are several on/offs down in the access panel. I pulled a D2D also. Even though the pilot light was lit, there was an on/off toggle that allowed the light switch to turn it on and off. That toggle was set to off, so the light switch did nothing. I turned the toggle to ON, then the light switch worked as it should.

Probably a bad Thermopile (I think that is what it is called) Had this happen to be at my old house.
