I think Jesse Owens is correct. Thorpe came to mind for me as well, but I recall he was born pre-1900 and probably aged out by 1935.
Two things made it a no-brainer.
* 1935 – it was just one year later that Owens dominated the Berlin Olympics.
* The long jump record standing for 25 years.
For some reason, I associated Jesse Owens with the 1940’s and the only other athlete that came to mind was Jim Thorpe.
